Azulay is one <strong>of</strong> the most outstanding authors in the <strong>History</strong><strong>of</strong> Brazilian <strong>Dermatology</strong>.Rui MirandaA pillar <strong>of</strong> Paraná dermatology, in 1960 he founded the Souza Araújo Center <strong>of</strong> LeprosyStudies at Paraná’s Federal University, and, in 1990, the Pro-Hansen Foundation. Inthe field <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong>, he described five new pathologies, and within hansenology, hecontributed to a better knowledge <strong>of</strong> the disease.Lucio BakosBorn in 1942, in Zadar — present-day Croatia, then Italian territory — he graduatedin 1966 from Rio Grande do Sul’s Federal University (RGSFU). He was Visiting Scholar atCambridge University during 1972-73, working at Cambridge’s Addenbrooke’s Hospital,headed by Dr. Arthur Rook. He is Full Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong> at the UFRGS since 1991.Sylvio FragaHe graduated in 1953 from the Medical School <strong>of</strong> the old Brazil University. Between1955 and 1956, he did his medical internship in Philadelphia (US). He completed the specializationin <strong>Dermatology</strong> and the pathology course at the Armed Forces Institute <strong>of</strong>Pathology in Washington. He was co-founder <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Dermatology</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> the HolyHouse.João and Bernardo GontijoFrom Minas Gerais, the Gontijo family (the father, João B. Gontijo Assunção, and theson, Bernardo Gontijo) are distinguished personalities in <strong>Dermatology</strong>. João graduated in1947 from the MGFU, and completed his medical internship in Paris, at the Saint-LouisHospital, in 1948-1949. Through public competition, he obtained the degree <strong>of</strong> associatepr<strong>of</strong>essor and unchaired faculty member <strong>of</strong> the MGFU. He published twenty-four worksindividually or in collaboration, and presented around two hundred papers at congressesand meetings in Brazil and abroad. Bernardo, the son, graduated from MGFU and completedhis medical internship in <strong>Dermatology</strong> at SPU’s Hospital das Clínicas ; he is currentlypr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> the MGFU Medical School. Both whave been participating membersand presidents <strong>of</strong> the BSD.Mário and Márcio RutowitschMárcio Rutowitsch is son <strong>of</strong> the dermatologist Mário Rutowitsch, who was president<strong>of</strong> the BSD in 1960. Márcio graduated from Fluminense Federal University and is currentlythe Head <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Dermatology</strong> Service at the HSE.Jorge José de Souza FilhoBorn in Florianópolis in 1937, he graduated from Paraná’s Federal University in1964, and was accepted in 1965 as intern with a scholarship at São Paulo’s Hospital das83
