LUIS VALDIVIA BLONDETremained until 1980; Dr. Oscar Romero Rivas succeeded him until 1993, when the <strong>Dermatology</strong>Course became a chapter within the internal medicine course; its Head up tothe present is Dr. Dante Mendoza Rodríguez.The development <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong> until the second half <strong>of</strong> the twentieth century wasfocused on the National Higher University <strong>of</strong> St. Mark. Starting in 1960, new universitieswere created in Lima and in the rest <strong>of</strong> the country, many <strong>of</strong> them with a Medical School.In 1966, there were Medical Schools at five universities: the National Higher University<strong>of</strong> St. Mark, the Cayetano Heredia Peruvian University, the Trujillo National University,the National University <strong>of</strong> St. Augustine <strong>of</strong> Arequipa and the National University <strong>of</strong> St.Aloysius Gonzaga <strong>of</strong> Ica.At present, in Lima alone there are medical programs at eight universities: NationalHigher University <strong>of</strong> St. Mark, Cayetano Heredia Peruvian University, St. Martín de PorrasPrivate University, Federico Villareal National University, Ricardo Palma University,Scientific University <strong>of</strong> the South, St. John the Baptist University and Norbert Wiener University.The Cayetano Heredia Peruvian University for Medical and Biological Sciences wascreated by Drs. Alberto Hurtado and Aurelio Loret de Mola en 1962. The former becamethe president and the latter took over the Chair <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong>.On May 17 <strong>of</strong> that same year, the St. Martín de Porras Private University was founded;its first president was the Rev. Father Víctor Sánchez Valer; his Medical and DentistrySchool opened on July 6, 1983. In 1984, the Medical School became independent, and<strong>Dermatology</strong> was taught as a chapter <strong>of</strong> the internal medicine course. In 2002, it becamea course, headed by Dr. Julio Bonilla Espinoza.The Federico Villarreal National University was founded on September 18, 1965. TheMedical School was created by resolution No. 1,348, on April 12, 1966, and by Law14,692 <strong>of</strong> October 18 <strong>of</strong> the same year. Its base hospital is the Hipólito Unanue Hospital(formerly, the Bravo Chico Chest Hospital). Its first Dean was Dr. César Reynafarje Hurtado,and the first head <strong>of</strong> the Chair <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong> was Dr. Juan Manrique Ávila.In Southern Peru, medical education began in 1827 in Arequipa, at Independence Collegein coordination with St. Augustine University. Its first president was Dr. José FernándezDávila. The Medical School operated with ups and downs up to its closure in1876; it reopened in 1958, and the teaching <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong> within it began in 1960; itsfirst pr<strong>of</strong>essor was Dr. Marcial Ríos Flores, and its hospital educational base was at theHonorio Delgado Hospital (formerly, General Hospital). Drs. Víctor Delgado Fernándezand Luis Suárez Eliot Han have been pr<strong>of</strong>essors <strong>of</strong> the specialized field; the current Head<strong>of</strong> the service is Dr. Raúl Hurtado Paredes, with whom the <strong>Dermatology</strong> graduate programhas been initiated.In 1967, St. Mary Catholic University, which has a Medical School, was founded; initially,Dr. Marcial Ríos Flores, later, Dr. René Portugal Gallegos, Dr. Lilia Zapata Cárcamo,and currently, Dr. Fredy Mostajo Quiroz worked as <strong>Dermatology</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essors.The clinical internships <strong>of</strong> students from both universities take place at the Goyenecheand Honorio Delgado hospitals, both <strong>of</strong> Public Health, and at the Social Welfare Hospital.St. Anthony the Abbot University was created by Pope Innocent XII on March 1, 1692.The Medical School was created by the Executive Council on August 25, 1977, and wasapproved by the Regional Council <strong>of</strong> the Peruvian University in the city <strong>of</strong> Arequipa onAugust 30, 1977. Finally, on December 2, 1977, the National Council <strong>of</strong> the Peruvian Universityauthorized its operation, starting in 1980. The <strong>Dermatology</strong> chapter in the undergraduateprogram is currently headed by Dr. Roy García Cuadros.In the North there is the Trujillo National University, founded on May 10, 1824, bySimón Bolívar and Faustino Sánchez Carrión. It is the fourth oldest University in Peru,following St. Mark, St. Christopher <strong>of</strong> Huamanga and Cuzco’s St. Anthony the Abbot. TheMedical School was inaugurated on December 29, 1957.
