<strong>History</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong> in PeruHe has been Secretary <strong>of</strong> the Michigan <strong>Dermatology</strong> Society, from 1978 a 1981, andPresident <strong>of</strong> that institution from 1981 to 1983.He belonged to the <strong>Dermatology</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> the Anglo-<strong>American</strong> Clinic in Lima, from1965 to 1974; from 1984 to date (2004), he is Director <strong>of</strong> the Dermatological Institute.He is the author <strong>of</strong> 15 publications in national and foreign medical journals, such asJAMA, <strong>Dermatology</strong> Archives, Journal <strong>of</strong> the <strong>American</strong> Academy <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong> andothers, on subjects such as “Ototoxicity <strong>of</strong> Kanamicine,” “Essential Familiar HypercholesterolemicXanthomatosis,” “Subcutaneous Calcifications in Leg Ulcers,” “Jadassohn’s Epithelium,”“Skin and Conjunctival Multiple Kerato-Acanthomes,” “Benign ChronicFamiliar Pemphigus,” “Hereditary Anhidrotic Ectodermic Dysplasia,” “Reiter’s Syndromewith Keratodermia,” “Principles <strong>of</strong> Photobiology and Photosensibility,” “Minocycline andGeneralized Skin Pigmentation,” “Torres’ Syndrome: Report on 2 Cases,” among others.He has collaborated in chapters <strong>of</strong> books such as Conn’s Current Therapy, with thesubject, “Treatment <strong>of</strong> Scabies” and others.He has given many lectures at national and foreign institutions on various subjects in<strong>Dermatology</strong>.He is a member <strong>of</strong> the Peruvian Society <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong>, <strong>of</strong> the Ibero-<strong>Latin</strong> <strong>American</strong>Association <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong>, <strong>of</strong> the <strong>American</strong> Medical Association, <strong>of</strong> the <strong>American</strong> VenerealDisease Association, <strong>of</strong> the International Society <strong>of</strong> Tropical <strong>Dermatology</strong> and <strong>of</strong> theInternational Society <strong>of</strong> Pediatric <strong>Dermatology</strong>, among others.Pedro Navarro 18Pedro Navarro, dermatologist, Doctor in Medicine, born in the Constitutional Province<strong>of</strong> Callao in 1931. Upon graduation from the St. Ferdinand Medical School in 1958, withthe degree <strong>of</strong> Surgical Doctor, he started working in Military Health; later on, he joinedthe Employee’s Central Hospital, where he was assigned to the <strong>Dermatology</strong> Service.In subsequent years, up to 1963, he trained in short periods abroad; in 1964, he obtaineda place in Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Luis Pierini’s Chair, in Buenos Aires; in that same city, he received trainingin Dermatopathology with Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Jorge Abulafia; in August and September, 1967, heattended Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Duperrat’s Service at the Saint-Louis Hospital in Paris.He obtained the degree <strong>of</strong> Specialist in <strong>Dermatology</strong> at the UNMSM in 1976, and theAcademic status <strong>of</strong> Doctor in Medicine in 1978 at that same University.He started university teaching as <strong>Dermatology</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor in 1977; his academic activitycontinues up to the present with the rank <strong>of</strong> Head Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, being a member <strong>of</strong> theCommittee on the Specialized Field <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong> <strong>of</strong> the Graduate Unit <strong>of</strong> the UNMSMfor many years. He is also a faculty member at the Ricardo Palma University since 2001in <strong>Dermatology</strong> education.In the area <strong>of</strong> medical treatment, he was Head <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Dermatology</strong> Service at theEdgardo Rebagliati Hospital (formerly, the Employee’s Central Hospital), a post he heldup to 2001.With multiple studies and academic and pr<strong>of</strong>essional training, he has participated incongresses and contests <strong>of</strong> the specialized field since 1963, and is the author <strong>of</strong> numerouspublications in journals and books.He is founding member <strong>of</strong> the Peruvian Society <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong>, Member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>American</strong>Academy <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong>, <strong>of</strong> the Ibero-<strong>Latin</strong> <strong>American</strong> Association <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong>,<strong>of</strong> the Peruvian <strong>Dermatology</strong> Circle, <strong>of</strong> the International Society <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong>, <strong>of</strong> theBolivarian Federation <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong>, <strong>of</strong> the Leprosy Research Institute <strong>of</strong> Argentina, <strong>of</strong>the Oral Pathology Society and <strong>of</strong> the New York Academy <strong>of</strong> Sciences.Upon the creation <strong>of</strong> the Peruvian Medical Association in 1970, he participated activelyin the definitive registration <strong>of</strong> the Peruvian Society <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong> in the nationalrecord <strong>of</strong> Scientific Medical Institutions.327
