He received an award from the Peruvian Medical Association for hiscontributions to Peruvian medicine and his great pr<strong>of</strong>essional prestige. The Peruvian Society<strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong> gave him the Medal <strong>of</strong> Honor, in September 2004, as FoundingMember and Ex-President.Figure 19. Dr. DanteMendozaDante Mendoza 15Dante Mendoza is a dermatologist and dermopathologist; born in the Junín Department,Peru, in 1934 (Figure 19). He completed his graduate studies at the <strong>Dermatology</strong>Service with Pr<strong>of</strong>. Robert Degos, and in Dermatopathology with Pr<strong>of</strong>. Jean Civatte, at theSaint-Louis Hospital in Paris. On September 20, 1974, he obtained the degree <strong>of</strong> Specialistin <strong>Dermatology</strong>, at the National Higher University <strong>of</strong> St. Mark. He began his teachingcareer at the latter, entering by competition as Chief <strong>of</strong> Internships, in July 1962; heobtained the top category <strong>of</strong> Head Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, in January 1981. In 1993 he was appointedHead <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Dermatology</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> the St. Mark University Medical School.His most important works include: “Donovanosis at Dos de Mayo Hospital,” “Kaposi’sSarcoma, from 1991 to 1993 at the Dos de Mayo Hospital,” and “Lipoid Necrobiosis atthe Dos de Mayo Hospital, 1992-1993.”He is a Founding Member <strong>of</strong> the Peruvian Society <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong> and belongs to theIbero-<strong>Latin</strong> <strong>American</strong> Association <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong>.At present (2004), he is President <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Dermatology</strong> Specialized Field Committee <strong>of</strong>the Graduate Unit <strong>of</strong> the St. Mark University Medical School.Wenceslao Castillo 15Wenceslao Castillo was born in Lima in 1929; he obtained the degree <strong>of</strong> Medical Surgeonat the UNMSM in 1956 (Figure 20). In 1961, he became pr<strong>of</strong>essor at the St. MarkUniversity, where he is currently Head Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong> <strong>of</strong> the St. FerdinandMedical School, and is Head <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Dermatology</strong> Service <strong>of</strong> the Daniel Alcides A. Carrión-Callao Hospital Complex.The most important work Dr. Castillo has carried out in his pr<strong>of</strong>essional career is inthe field <strong>of</strong> research. His work, “Chronic Mucocutaneous Candidiasis, ImmunologicalStudy and Specific Treatment with Transference Factor,” drafted together with Dr. RaúlPatruco, earned him the Second Prize <strong>of</strong> the prestigious Hipólito Unanue Institute in1979, and an Honorable Mention in the Roussell Award.In 1982, the “Study <strong>of</strong> Immunological Parameters in Infectious and Tropical Diseases324
