<strong>History</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong> in Peruoutstanding work over 40 years. In 1996, the Peruvian Medical Association, in a mainceremony, gave him a Medal <strong>of</strong> Order for distinguished services in the field <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong>.In 2003, at CILAD’s Fifteenth Congress, in Buenos Aires, he was given an award forhis collaboration in the development <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong> in Peru, an acknowledgement madeby the President <strong>of</strong> the International League <strong>of</strong> Dermatological Societies (ILDS).CONTINUATOR PROFESSORSJuan Manrique 15Juan Manrique graduated from the University <strong>of</strong> Chile (Figure 15). He was born in Ilo,Moquegua Department, in 1914. He trained at the St. Vincent Hospital in Santiago deChile, in the <strong>Dermatology</strong> Service <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Arturo Parodi, a disciple <strong>of</strong> Germany’sPr<strong>of</strong>. Jadassohn.In 1944, he joined the <strong>Dermatology</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> Chile. Upon hisreturn to Peru, in 1947, he started working at the Workers’ Hospital in Lima, up to 1984.At that hospital, he headed the <strong>Dermatology</strong> Service, and later, the Specialized MedicineDepartment, up to his retirement. Furthermore, he was appointed Consulting DermatologistPhysician at the Military and Aeronautical Hospitals.In 1960, he became pr<strong>of</strong>essor at the Medical School <strong>of</strong> the National Higher University<strong>of</strong> St. Mark, in the <strong>Dermatology</strong> Department.In 1972, he was asked to open the <strong>Dermatology</strong> Department at the Federico VillarrealNational University, where he worked as Head Pr<strong>of</strong>essor.In 1990, he was named Emeritus Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> Chile, and, a year later,he was given the title <strong>of</strong> Doctor Honoris Causa.Over the course <strong>of</strong> his pr<strong>of</strong>essional life, this distinguished specialist has carried out avast and useful labor in the field <strong>of</strong> university education: he has given Extension andGraduate courses, he has conducted consultancies on undergraduate and graduate theses,has been part <strong>of</strong> undergraduate and graduate thesis juries, and has participated invarious academic commissions.Among the most important research works he has published are two <strong>Dermatology</strong>Handbooks which serve as guides for undergraduate students <strong>of</strong> the Federico VillarrealNational University.He has participated in various Congresses <strong>of</strong> his specialized field, both nationally andinternationally, acting as organizer and lecturer.Among the multiple awards he has received are those <strong>of</strong> the Peruvian Medical Association,<strong>of</strong> the ex-Workers’ Hospital (now Guillermo Almenara Hospital), <strong>of</strong> the MilitaryHospital, <strong>of</strong> the Aeronautical Hospital, <strong>of</strong> the Peruvian Society <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong>, <strong>of</strong> the BolivarianSociety <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong> and <strong>of</strong> the Chilean Society <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong>.He is a member <strong>of</strong> various Scientific Societies in Peru and abroad, and has held theposition <strong>of</strong> President <strong>of</strong> the Peruvian Society <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong> and <strong>of</strong> the Bolivarian Federation<strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong>.Figure 15. Dr. JuanManriqueJosé Neyra 15José Neyra is a physician, Doctor in Medicine, specialist in Tropical Medicine, Leprology,Phthisiology and Sanitary Medicine. He was born in Lima in 1920; he completed hisgraduate studies in France; he is the author <strong>of</strong> various studies on the Epidemiology <strong>of</strong>Leprosy in Peru (Figure 16).He worked for thirty-two years at the Ministry <strong>of</strong> Health, <strong>of</strong> which he became Vice-Minister in 1978.He has dedicated a large portion <strong>of</strong> his time to teaching, working as Pr<strong>of</strong>essor for fortyyears at the St. Ferdinand Medical School, where he attained the category <strong>of</strong> Head Pr<strong>of</strong>essorin the specialized field <strong>of</strong> Tropical Diseases.321
