Among others, his participationin the first Peruvian Congress of Dermatology stood out; he had been incorporated as HonoraryMember of the Peruvian Society of Dermatology on May 27, 1967.The awards he received during his professional career include the Order of HipólitoUnanue, with the rank of Grand Officer, the Order of Daniel A. Carrión, and the Medal ofHonor of the U.S. Armed Forces Institute of Pathology.Figure 11. Dr. HugoPesceHugo Pesce (1900-1969) 15He was a physician, tropicalist leprologist, Doctor in Medicine, with graduate studiesin Italy; Dr Pesce was a pioneer in Tropical Dermatology education in Peru. He was bornin the city of Tarma-Peru in the year 1900. (Figure 11)He graduated as doctor at the Genoa Medical School, Italy, in 1927. He worked as ageneral practitioner until 1931; he collaborated at Archbishop Loayza Hospital with DoctorCarlos Monge and was part of the team that conducted the first studies of Andean Biologyin Morococha, in 1927.In 1931, he had his first contact with Tropical Medicine, working as a doctor in theSatipo colony in the Peruvian jungle. A product of his stay there was his first work in thespecialized field: Sanitary Geography in the Satipo Region.Back in Lima, he worked at the Medical Clinic of the Archbishop Loayza Hospital upto 1935, when he was appointed Sanitary Commissioner of the Region; that same year,he founded the Apurímac Anti-Leprosy Service (SALA), a predecessor entity of the nationalAnti-Leprosy Service which he created upon his return to Lima in 1944. This servicelater became the Leprosy Department and subsequently Division of the HealthMinistry Norms and Supervision Office.In 1937, he described the first case of Tubercular Leprosy in Apurímac. In 1945, hejoined the Infectious, Tropical and Parasitic Diseases department, headed by Doctor OswaldoHercelles the San Fernando Medical School. He worked on the world classificationof leprosy, of which he was the co-author with Drs. Fernández and Schujman from Argentinaand with Souza Campos from Brazil. He was creator and leader of the PeruvianLeprology School.He contributed decisively to the academic reconstruction of San Fernando Universityin 1961, occupying, by competition, the Chair of the Infectious and Tropical Diseases Departmentas Head Professor, a post which he held for 14 consecutive years until May 15,1967, when he became Emeritus Professor. Besides his studies on leprosy, he studied andexhaustively collected data on exanthematic and recurrent typhus — of which he hadample experience due to his stay in the sierra — as well as on deep mycoses, especiallySouth American Blastomycosis and Histoplasmosis. He was manager of the Daniel A.Carrión Institute of Tropical Medicine of the National Higher University of St. Mark.The intellectual stature of Dr. Hugo Pesce went beyond medical activity; he stood outas a great lecturer, man of letters and philosopher, handling dialectical materialism withextraordinary skill for the analysis of a substantial intellectual baggage that his privilegedencyclopedic mind was able to treasure, becoming a prime consultant for scholarsof Peruvian reality.Hugo Pesce, teacher and researcher, died suddenly on July, 26, 1969, at 69 years ofage, at the height of his intellectual production, after having carried out gigantic, sustainedand impeccable academic work.318

History of Dermatology in PeruMarcial Ayaipoma (1908-1998) 15Dr. Ayaipoma was a dermatologist born in 1908, in the Huancavelica Department.(Figure 12) Follower of the French School, he was summoned in 1942 by Prof. AurelioLoret de Mola, who was in charge of the Dermatology and Syphilography Department ofthe University of St. Mark Medical School. He was subsequently appointed by competitionas Associate Lecturer in Dermatology. Later, the Dermatology team was completedwith Drs. Víctor Meth and Elda Canadell, with Guillermo Arana and Jaime Flores as assistants.In 1961, a serious problem arose between the University of St. Mark Medical Schooland the University Council, when the University rejected the intervention of the StudentBody in its government. Consequently, the professors of the University resigned collectively.Months later, these professors, among who was Ayaipoma, founded the CayetanoHeredia Peruvian University of Medical and Biological Sciences, which was initially locatedat the premises previously occupied by the Belén School, at the Jirón de la Uniónin Lima’s Cercado district.Dr. Ayaipoma continued teaching as Associate Lecturer in the Dermatology Departmentof the new University, which also operated at the Archbishop Loayza Hospital. In1970, he resigned the post irrevocably, and with him, the rest of the faculty did as well,except Doctor Víctor Gonzáles Pinillos. But even at a distance from academic activity, hecontinued providing important medical services to the community, in his condition of lifetimesecretary of his class.Dr. Ayaipoma was an active member of the Ibero-Latin American Association of Dermatology(CILAD) and also a founding member of the Peruvian Society of Dermatology.Figure 12. Dr.Marcial AyaipomaVíctor Gonzales Pinillos (1914-1985) 15Dr. Gonzales Pinillos was a vastly experienced dermatologist (Figure13). He was bornin Trujillo, in 1914; educated in the French School, faithful collaborator of Prof. Loret deMola, through practice he specialized in Dermatology, an activity to which he devote himselfuntil his death in 1985.During a large part of his career, he provided services for the Public Administration,since he considered one of his priorities to be the direct contribution, with his effort anddedication, to the improvement of the Public Health services in the country. The HealthMinistry assigned him to the jungle region, where he worked between 1942 and 1944,solving problems related to the diverse dermatological pathologies.In 1945, he began working in the field of Social Security, at the No. 1 Policlinic and atthe ex-Workers’ Hospital, currently Guillermo Almenara Hospital, medical centers atwhich he stayed until 1983, as Head of the Dermatology Service. A year later, he enteredthe Archbishop Loayza Hospital, where he also worked as Head of the Dermatology Officeuntil 1961.Between 1970 and the mid-80s, Dr. Gonzales Pinillos was in charge at the ArchbishopLoayza Hospital of the largest and most active Dermatology Service of the country, madeup of 14 specialists, each of whom saw an average of 40 patients a day. In 1977, he obtaineda Ph.D. in Medicine at the National Higher University of St. Mark, where he hadworked as professor in the Dermatology department between 1942 and 1960.Founder of the Cayetano Heredia Peruvian University, he was Head Professor of theDermatology department until 1979.Figure 13. He was born in the city of Ayabaca, Piura Departament,in 1917. (Figure 14)Prof. Loret de Mola encouraged him to travel abroad, and recommended the Saint-Louis319
