<strong>History</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong> in Peruas blackberry and mercurial ointments, which only helped to accelerate the death <strong>of</strong> thepatient, and filled the doctors’ pockets.In 1918, Hermilio Valdizán founded the Anales de la facultad de medicina de San Fernando,in order to publish medical research works exclusively and avoid articles onpompous ceremonies and other topics that had nothing to do with Medicine. In this journal,the research work <strong>of</strong> Barton (discoverer <strong>of</strong> the wart germ) began to be published, aswell as that <strong>of</strong> Pedro Weiss, Tello, Monge and many other researchers.In the 1920s, the pr<strong>of</strong>essors <strong>of</strong> the St. Ferdinand Medical School, continuing with theexample <strong>of</strong> Cayetano Heredia, stimulated and helped many young doctors so that theycould study various specialized fields at European universities, in order fill the newchairs that were being created. Continuing with this practice, Aurelio Loret de Mola traveledto Paris to study <strong>Dermatology</strong>, a chair he headed upon his return.Part II■ Part IILuis Flores-Cevallos<strong>History</strong> <strong>of</strong> dermatological institutions in PeruPERUVIAN SOCIETY OF DERMATOLOGYIn the late 1930s, the head pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Dermatology</strong> department <strong>of</strong> the BuenosAires University Medical School, Luis Pierini, and Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Basombrío, a Peruvian dermatologistliving in Argentina, arrived in Peru and met with Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Aurelio Loret deMola in order to encourage the foundation <strong>of</strong> the Peruvian Society <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong>. Thegoal was not attained because at that time there were only seven dermatologists, butthey recommended training more specialists in the country and sending the more outstandingones abroad to complete their education.On May 15, 1964, Peruvian dermatologists held a special meeting in order to foundthe Peruvian Society <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong>. They approved the bylaws drawn up by a committeemade up <strong>of</strong> the following dermatologists: Aizic Cotlear, Juan Manrique, Amaro Urrelo,Guillermo Arana, Luis Cavero and José San Martín. The bylaws had 11 chaptersand 30 articles 8 . Some <strong>of</strong> the founders <strong>of</strong> the Peruvian Dermatological Society wereAmaro Urrelo, Marcial Ayaipoma, Juan Manrique, Zuño Burstein and Wenceslao Castillo.The society was formed with the following goals: grouping dermatologists and doctors <strong>of</strong>related fields; encouraging research; interacting with similar national and internationalorganizations; certifying as dermatology specialists those doctors who showed the ethical,training, and suitability conditions required by the appropriate regulations; until aMedical Association was constituted, embodying the ethical and deontological functions<strong>of</strong> the specialized field; and collaborating with governmental and private entities in thesolution <strong>of</strong> technical problems within its domain. The duration <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Directorswas established at one year.In 1971, with Dr. Luis Flores-Cevallos as President <strong>of</strong> the Society, a committee was appointedto modify the Bylaws, to meet the requirements <strong>of</strong> the Peruvian Medical Association.Minor aspects <strong>of</strong> the Bylaws have been modified on various occasions 9 ; since the latestreform (1996), the Board <strong>of</strong> Directors is elected every two years. The Peruvian Society<strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong> schedules monthly clinical-pathological meetings, events, congressesevery two years, and many other scientific activities that take place in Lima and in theprovinces. On September 1, 2004, the PSD celebrated its first 40 years; in a Ruby Jubileeceremony, the Board <strong>of</strong> Directors, with President Dr. Nicolás Tapia Dueñas and SecretaryDr. Luis Valdivia Blondet, awarded medals <strong>of</strong> honor to the founders and former presidents.311
