At present, Dr. Analise Roskamp Budel is in charge <strong>of</strong> theservice.The Mayoralty’s treatment network and the State’s network are interconnected, seeingnearly a thousand patients per month. Paraná also has the Service <strong>of</strong> the Holy House<strong>of</strong> Mercy, PUC, as a certified service, with Dr. Luiz Carlos Pereira as Head <strong>of</strong> Service.Gaúchos in <strong>Dermatology</strong>Dr. Ernst von Bassewitz, a German who graduated in Berlin in 1890, was the firstphysician in Rio Grande do Sul to practice in the specialized field <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong>. Aftervisiting São Paulo, he arrived in 1894 at the gaúcho (local horseman) flats <strong>of</strong> Rio Grandedo Sul, and worked in remote coastal and rural locations. In 1927, in the Rio Grande doSul’s Medical Annals, he published a report on the incidence <strong>of</strong> leprosy in the Germancolony.The first pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong> and Syphilology <strong>of</strong> the Porto Alegre MedicalSchool, created in 1898, was Dr. Modesto José de Souza, succeeded by Dr. Rodolfo Masson,and afterwards, through public selection, by Dr. Ulisses de Nonohay, who was alsoto participate in the revolutionary contingent that marched on Rio de Janeiro withGetúlio Vargas.In 1942, the Official Course on Clinical <strong>Dermatology</strong> and Syphilology was created atthe Porto Alegre Medical School, headed by José Gerbase, from Alagoas, a disciple <strong>of</strong>Ramos e Silva. In 1946, Pr<strong>of</strong>. Clóvis Bopp, lecturer since 1959 with the thesis “Chromoblastomycosis:Contribution to its Study,” also joined. In 1992, Pr<strong>of</strong>. Lúcio Bakos wasappointed full pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong> <strong>of</strong> Rio Grande do Sul’s Federal University, alsothrough public competition.Medical SciencesThe Porto Alegre Federal Medical School Foundation was created in 1960 with thename <strong>of</strong> Catholic Medical School, alsongside the Brotherhood <strong>of</strong> the Holy House <strong>of</strong> Mercy.Four years later, Pr<strong>of</strong>. Enio Candiota de Campos, an outstanding teacher and scientist,was appointed first Head <strong>of</strong> the Chair <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dermatology</strong>, together with Pr<strong>of</strong>essors AchylesHemb, Gisela Del Pino and Aída Schafranski. Following the death <strong>of</strong> the former, the leadershipwas taken over by Pr<strong>of</strong>. Dr. Armin Bernhard, and, subsequently, by Pr<strong>of</strong>. CláudioBartelle.The Foundation’s <strong>Dermatology</strong> Service is located at the hospital complexes <strong>of</strong> Porto Alegre’sHoly House, where the syllabus and the graduate course are taught to residents andstudents. It has Érika Geier, Walmor Bonatto, Renan Bonamigo, Irene Menezes, AídaSchafranski, Carolina Feijó and Raquel García as pr<strong>of</strong>essors, as well as other collaborators.The RGSFU ServiceThe <strong>Dermatology</strong> Service <strong>of</strong> Porto Alegre’s Hospital das Clínicas has three RGSFU pr<strong>of</strong>essors:one a full pr<strong>of</strong>essor, Lúcio Bakos, and two associates: Tânia Cestari and Luiz FernandoBopp Muller. It also has five dermatology doctors; Ane K. Simões Pires, Isabel C.P. Kuhl, Márcia S. Zampese, Marlene L. Weissbluth and Mirian Pargendler, two residentsand three students, in addition to two Master’s students and one Ph.D. Student per year.Besides teaching these courses, the members <strong>of</strong> the Service devote themselves to treatmentand research (strongly encouraged at all levels).Considered as an AIDS referral center for Rio Grande do Sul, the <strong>Dermatology</strong> Service<strong>of</strong> Porto Alegre’s CH has a digital dermatoscopy area, with video-dermatoscopy andimage-analysis, and a phytotherapy and photobiology area, to treat photosensitive patients.It also has a Public Health area, since it receives doctors provided by the HealthSecretariat who work on AIDS, STDs and hanseniasis.
