Robert Winston Building
The Robert Winston Building officially opened in May 2005 by
Professor the Lord Robert Winston who is our University Chancellor.
It has been described as ‘a beacon for the future of healthcare
education’ by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. The £13 million
health building with cutting edge design and state-of-the-art
equipment is now home to students in the following areas – nursing,
midwifery, occupational therapy, operating department practice,
paramedic practice, physiotherapy, radiography, radiotherapy and
social work.
The building is wrapped around the skills laboratories which form the heart of the building.
Skills laboratories are used by professional and inter-professional groups to prepare for
placements and rehearse skills between placements in readiness for practice. They are
designed to follow service user pathways, from the home through all stages of care.
The facilities includes a new digital x-ray suite, operating theatre and multi-media equipment
including plasma TVs, DVD players and video recorders, as well as cameras to record and
play back to students their actions.
The building replicates a real hospital, with a real workplace environment. It contains topof-the-range
equipment for use by nursing, paramedic practice, physiotherapy and social
work students.
12 13
14
The Robert Winston Building contains
• wards
• an action learning suite
• anatomy laboratories with high-tech software
• bathrooms and bedrooms for creating a range of domestic and intermediate care
scenarios
• a theatre and scrub area
• a radiotherapy planning suite
• a diagnostic imaging/x-ray suite
• a research laboratory
• a creative therapy room
• an occupational therapy area
• a rehabilitation area and kitchens and a garden adapted for use by people with a
disability such as wheelchair users, eg raised flower beds for use in gardening therapy
The equipment includes high-tech, life-like, talking dummy patients that can be programmed
to act in certain ways to allow students to diagnose and treat them under a variety of
scenarios, including a dummy which simulates childbirth.
There is also a brand new award-winning virtual training environment which gives
radiotherapy students the opportunity to interact in a virtual treatment room. The equipment
creates a life-size 3D replica of a radiotherapy treatment room, allowing students the
opportunity to develop vital practical skills in real-life clinical situations.
Students’ Union
You become a member of the Students’ Union once you join Sheffield
Hallam University. Hallam Union is a non-profit organisation, which
means that any surpluses made from our bars or events are
reinvested back into student services and support such as sports
clubs, Hallam Volunteering, and the advice centre.
The Union is run by 11 elected officers (five full time and six part time) who ensure that
everything that Hallam Union does has students at the heart.
Prior to being a student union, the HUBs used to be home to Sheffield’s National Centre
of Popular Music. The HUBS opened in 2005 after a £3 million refurbishment and has
recently undergone a redevelopment with a new cafe, shop and advice centre area.
The Union Bar (Bar Phoenix) on the ground floor offers traditional food and drink. Pod4 is
also on the ground floor which houses the shop, which stocks stationary, the essential
Sheffield Hallam hoody and discounted newspapers. The shop provides an opportunity to
eat, drink and relax, selling fair trade coffees and tea, fresh smoothies alongside tempting
paninis and cakes.
Upstairs contains three pods where club nights, live bands and comedy events are held.
Also located in the HUBS is SHU-Media which consists of a monthly magazine and an
online pod casting and TV station.
There are a wide variety of sports clubs and societies that you can join. These are also run
by students so there is generally something to reflect what you are into. Sports clubs offer
the opportunity to represent your University in a variety of activities from football to ultimate
frisbee.
Hallam Union also has 29 societies to get involved with, however If you can't find a society
for you then the Union makes it really easy to set one up. Current societies include
African Caribbean, Amnesty International, Baha’i, Capoeira, Christian Union, Dance Sport,
Drama, Engage, Hallam Cheerleading, Hallam Contemporary Art, Hallam Music, Hallam
Rocks!, Health, Hindu, Ice Skating, Improvisational Comedy, Islamic, Journalism, Jugglesock,
Mario Kart, Oriental, Polercise, Psychology, Salsa, Sheffield Hallam Guides and Scouts,
ShuCathSoc, SHU Cooking, Street and Breakdancing, Volleyball Supporters Society
Hallam Volunteering offers you the chance to get involved in over 30 local volunteering
projects and is a great way to enhance your employability. Projects vary working with
children, young people and the elderly.
The Advice Centre helps with any queries you may have relating to student loans, money
advice, benefits, housing, immigration, academic issues, legal and employment problems,
and anything else you need.
If you want to get even more involved you can become a student rep. As a key point of
contact for your particular course you will give fellow students the opportunity to voice their
opinions and then feed these back to academic staff. You will get training and support both
by the Union and the University.
How to get here
We are based in the heart of the country in Britain’s fifth largest city.
Major road and rail networks link Sheffield directly with the rest of the
country and the city itself is served by excellent bus and supertram
services.
Road links
Our City Campus is situated on Arundel Gate, directly adjacent to Sheffield’s Transport
Interchange on Pond Street and near to Sheffield’s train station. Collegiate Crescent Campus
is a ten minute drive from here, based off Ecclesall Road.
Sheffield’s motorway link is the M1, junctions 33 and 34. You are recommended to leave at
junction 33 and proceed into the city centre by way of the Parkway (A630).
For further information and a route planner please see our weblink http://www.shu.ac.uk/visit
Rail links
Regular inter-city services operate between Sheffield and
other main line towns and cities. London is two-and-a-half
hours away by train, Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham
one hour and Edinburgh four hours.
Sheffield’s Midland Station is just a two minute walk away
from our City Campus.
Local airports
Robin Hood (Doncaster-Sheffield) Airport is the closest
commercial airport to the city. Other regional airports include
Manchester Airport, Leeds-Bradford Airport and Nottingham
East Midlands Airport.
There are good rail links between Sheffield station and
Manchester Airport, the UK’s third largest airport. A journey
planner and details of train services can be found on the
National Rail Enquiries website.
How to get to City Campus – S1 1WB
From junction 33 of the M1, follow signs for A630 Sheffield City Centre. Continue on the
A630 until the dual carriageway ends at a roundabout with traffic signals (Park Square). Take
the fourth exit from the roundabout signposted City Centre, then the third left turn into
Arundel Gate. The City Campus is approximately 300 metres along on the left hand side.
There are several NCP car parks on Arundel Gate and limited on-street pay and display
parking on Arundel Street.
How to get to Collegiate Campus – S10 2BP
From City Campus go along Arundel Gate (the Odeon cinema and the University are on your
left) until you get to St Mary’s Road Roundabout. Turn right on the roundabout, taking the
third exit. Stay in the right hand lane at the traffic lights, and turn left (first exit) at the next
roundabout (Waitrose is on your left). You are now on Ecclesall Road. Go past another set of
traffic lights, garage, various restaurants and bars, then turn right onto Collegiate Crescent
after Champs and just before the traffic lights.
Parking
There is no University parking at either campus, however there is plenty of parking in the city
centre near City Campus, but limited parking at Collegiate Crescent Campus. We would
advise visitors to use these facilities and either walk or get a bus to Collegiate Crescent
Campus. Walking would take about 20–25 minutes and would allow you to see more of the
city centre and surrounding area. You can get on the number 80 bus outside City Campus
opposite the Millennium Galleries up to Collegiate Crescent Campus, which run every ten
minutes. Alternatively you could get a bus from Leopold Street (opposite the Town Hall) –
no. 81, 82, 83. 85, 86 and 88.
If you do not wish to park in the city centre, you could make use of Sheffield’s Park and Ride
system.
