The 2008-09 season marks the 20th anniversary of the Flames victory over the Montreal Canadiensin the 1988-89 Stanley Cup Final. Calgary won the series 4–2, claiming its first championship.titles (1993-94, 1994-95), and a Northwest Division title (2005-06), plus several <strong>NHL</strong>individual and team honours and numerous attendance records.The pinnacle of the team’s history was being crowned Stanley Cup championsfor the 1988-89 season when they defeated the Montréal Canadiens. The Flames’first appearance in the finals was in 1986, and their most recent in 2004, whenthey electrified not only the city of Calgary but captivated all of Canada with theinspirational playoff run.The Flames followed up that performance by winning the tough Northwest Divisionin 2005-2006 with 103 points, ranking seventh overall in the <strong>NHL</strong> and winning theWilliam Jennings Trophy. That same year, goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff was awardedthe Vezina Trophy as the <strong>NHL</strong>’s top goaltender, while Dion Phaneuf was nominatedfor the Calder Trophy as the league’s best rookie.7 CALGARY FLAMES
