HOCKEY CLuB PERSONNELASSISTANT COACHRobCOOKSONRob Cookson is in his ninth season with the Flames coaching staff after threeseasons as Video Coach with the Philadelphia Flyers. Cookson, a nativeof La<strong>com</strong>be, Alberta has an impressive resume of coaching and technicalexperience in the hockey world. Before joining the Flyers, he served as anAssistant Coach for the Canadian Men’s Olympic Team in the 1998 WinterOlympics in Nagano, Japan. More recently, he worked alongside Brent Sutteras an Assistant Coach for Team Canada’s gold medal winning team at the2005 World Junior Championships. In April 2003, Rob joined the CanadianNational Men’s Team as an Assistant Coach at the World Championshipsand played an important role as Canada captured the gold medal in thetournament. It was Rob’s third stint as Assistant Coach for Canada at theWorld Championships.Rob began his career with the Canadian Hockey program in 1991 as Managerof Video Production, assisting the Canadian National Team’s coaching staff(men’s, women’s and junior) with video preparation, analysis and video prescouting.As an Assistant Coach with Team Canada, Cookson has won fivegold medals (1995, 1996, 1997, 2005 World Juniors and 1997, 2003 WorldChampionships). He also served as a video technician for the Canadian Men’sOlympic Team in the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway.Rob and his wife Shirley make Calgary their year round home.GOALTENDING COACHDavidMARCOUXGoaltending coach David Marcoux enters his sixth season with the Flamesorganization. In this position, Marcoux works with all goaltenders in theFlames system. Since joining the Flames, Marcoux’s goaltenders have sethigh standards as the team finished third in the <strong>NHL</strong> in goals against (2.15) in03-04 and first in 05-06 (2.35). Marcoux successfully introduced the conceptof Mental Training (mental toughness, relaxation, concentration, confidenceand objectives) to the Flames goaltenders along with the Quebec technicalstyle of goaltending.In 2003-04, under Marcoux’s guidance, Miikka Kiprusoff, a Vezina trophynominee, set a new modern era record for goals against average (1.69). He alsofinished 1st in the <strong>NHL</strong> in save percentage (.933) and backstopped the Flamesall the way to the Stanley Cup Finals.In 2005-06, Kiprusoff earned the Jennings Trophy for the team with lowestgoals against average in the League (2.07) and the Vezina Trophy as bestgoaltender in the <strong>NHL</strong>. He also backstopped his team to a top spot in thedivision (103 pts).Marcoux also works closely with the Flames scouting staff in the areas ofgoaltender coaching and advising, pro scouting and in goaltender personneldecisions.Prior to joining the Flames, Marcoux held a position as Goaltender Coach with the Hull Olympiques of theQJMHL from 1997 to 2001. During this period, the team made the league finals in two consecutive years. He alsospent the previous 12 years teaching & coaching goaltenders in a sports academy in St-Jerome, Quebec.During the off-season, Marcoux’s conducts his goaltending camp (www.dmsg.ca) in Sherbrooke(QC),Ottawa(ON) and Calgary(AB) and is a writer for “Goalie’s World” Magazine. A graduate of the University ofSherbrooke with a Bachelor’s Degree in Science (Physical Education) in 1990, Marcoux continued his educationand in 1997 received his Masters’ Degree from the University of Montreal. His final thesis was “The Developmentand Evaluation of Ice Hockey Goaltenders”.David and his wife, Isabelle have two children, Adam (10) & Louka (8) and reside in Calgary.17 CALGARY FLAMES
