The <strong>International</strong> <strong>Wine</strong> <strong>Review</strong>May 2013Report #36: The <strong>Wine</strong>s of Santa BarbaraIntroductionThis <strong>report</strong>examines one of<strong>the</strong> most excitingwine regions inCalifornia—<strong>the</strong>wine producingvalleys of SantaBarbara. It is awine region ofgreat diversitythat enjoys acool climate forproducing high quality Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, ando<strong>the</strong>r varieties. Since <strong>the</strong> release of <strong>the</strong> movie Sideways in2004, Santa Barbara and its wines, especially Pinot Noir,have become world famous. However, <strong>the</strong> s<strong>to</strong>ry of <strong>the</strong>land, <strong>the</strong> winemakers, and <strong>the</strong>ir outstanding wines is notwell known and partly motivates this <strong>report</strong>.After a brief <strong>introduction</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> geography of SantaBarbara, we look in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> his<strong>to</strong>ry of its wine industry Weexplore <strong>the</strong> growth and development of <strong>the</strong> vineyards andwineries in <strong>the</strong> Santa Maria Valley, <strong>the</strong> Santa Ynez Valley,<strong>the</strong> Santa Rita Hills and o<strong>the</strong>r smaller growing regions.Since <strong>the</strong> special vineyards of Santa Barbara are not wellknown outside <strong>the</strong> region, we provide an annex describing<strong>the</strong> most important ones that are a source of fruit <strong>to</strong>multiple Santa Barbara wineries. We also discuss howover <strong>the</strong> decades Santa Barbara became an importantproducer of premium wines and <strong>the</strong> roles played by manypioneers and inves<strong>to</strong>rs whose passion and determinationbuilt <strong>the</strong> wine industry.The <strong>report</strong> also examines <strong>the</strong> terroir that contributes soimportantly <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> rich diversity of Santa Barbara’s growingareas for cool climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrahand <strong>the</strong> warmer conditions for growing Grenache ando<strong>the</strong>r Rhone and Bordeaux varieties, including SauvignonBlanc. The majority of <strong>the</strong> producers in <strong>the</strong> SantaMaria and Santa Ynez valleys are also family ownedand managed. The <strong>report</strong> examines <strong>the</strong> wines producedin Santa Barbara, focusing on <strong>the</strong> three most importantvarieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah. We identify<strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>p producers, <strong>the</strong>ir winemakers and <strong>the</strong> wines <strong>the</strong>yproduce. In <strong>the</strong> last section we provide tasting notes andratings of <strong>the</strong> more than 300 wines tasted for this <strong>report</strong>.As Santa Barbara has become better known for its wines,it has also become an outstanding destination for wineContinued on page 2

Today, in <strong>the</strong> city of Santa Barbaraand throughout Santa Barbara County, <strong>the</strong>re are countlessopportunities <strong>to</strong> taste wine while enjoying <strong>the</strong> local cuisine.We explored many of <strong>the</strong>se opportunities during our visitand <strong>report</strong> on <strong>the</strong> many fine dining venues in some detail.The future of Santa Barbara County’s wine industry looksbright. The improvements in viticulture and winemaking of<strong>the</strong> past decades have increased <strong>the</strong> quality of <strong>the</strong> winesand attracted <strong>the</strong> attention of <strong>the</strong> wine media and buyersof fine wine across <strong>the</strong> United States. The future growth of<strong>the</strong> industry depends in part on <strong>the</strong> effectiveness of its marketingpromotion activities like those carried out on behalfof all <strong>the</strong> AVAs under <strong>the</strong> umbrella of <strong>the</strong> Santa BarbaraCounty Vintner’s Association.Acknowledgements.
