For this reason our standard stock range isbased on the popular shiplap and offset cladding profiles. It is also why the more traditional Redwood, Larch andWestern Red Cedar species are included. These are timber species with a proven performance andappearance and, alongside the other products in the range, ensure the perfect solution for any installation is available.Domestic, commercial and refurbishment projectsIdeal for commercial, domestic and refurbishment projects,ArborClad cladding range offers a perfect starting point fromwhere you can select the materials most suited to eachindividual project. MAKING THE CORRECT CLADDING CHOICEWood cladding is becoming increasingly popular once more as a facing material, replacing brick orrendered finishes with warm and practical facades that are seen as a more sustainable option. It is usedfor internal or external applications, although you must consider the durability of the timber when selectingmaterial for external use. Wood cladding is generally easy to fix, but do consider final detailing, especiallyon corner joints and at ground level on external applications.Sustainable timberTimber is the most sustainable buildingproduct available. It is naturallyrenewable - over 97% of softwoodtimber used in the UK comes fromEurope, where the forest area isincreasing by the equivalent of100 football pitches an hour. For reassurance for softwoods andhardwoods look for certification labelslike FSC ® (Forest Stewardship Council)or PEFC (Programme for theEndorsement of Forest Certification). All the suppliers and materials chosenfor inclusion in this range have beenselected because they can providefull chain of custody certification.Softwood continues to be the mostpopular external cladding for mostbuildings. Western Red Cedar andEuropean Larch are naturally durable, but thanks to modern preservativemethods, less durable species are alsowidely used. Heat treatment of woodhas lead to the introduction of a newrange of softwood and hardwoodproducts that achieve greater durabilitywithout the use of chemicals.Durable temperate hardwoods, suchas European Oak and Sweet Chestnutare increasingly used. With theexception of their sapwood, they canbe used without treatment. They canbe installed kiln dried or ‘green’, but‘green’ timber requires specialdetailing to allow for shrinkage andmovement. Tropical hardwoods aregenerally stronger, more robust anddurable than softwoods for cladding.Choosing materials for theright finishThe species, grade, and qualityof materials you choose have animportant bearing on the service life, appearance and maintenance ofthe cladding.Take into account the number and sizeof knots (ensuring there are no deadknots) and other defects, such as splitsand shakes, when deciding on thefinal visual appearance of thecladding.Think about the final surface finishyou want to achieve when choosinga preservative treatment. For example, using a pressurised treatment processmay give the timber a greenappearance. Some species can be leftunfinished and will turn silvery-grey assunlight bleaches the surface. For adecorated surface, use good qualitymicroporous paint systems, or considerusing pre-finished timber cladding.Always follow the manufacturer’sinstructions to ensure good coverageand service life.Direction of boardingTimber cladding can be applied inany one of three directions. Take thisinto consideration at the time ofselection. Your decision will have animpact on the methods of fixing aswell as on the overall look of thefacade.Horizontal boardingAvailable with overlapped or profiledsections. The board profile andspacing can provide a variety ofdesign effects, as well as protectionfor the building. If using horizontalboarding, consider how the boardswill be fixed and jointed to providegood detailing for the building.Vertical boardingBoard on board is a popular andversatile arrangement, althoughshiplap and tongued and groovedprofiles are also used. The tonguesneed to be long enough to allow forslight movement of the timber so thatopen gaps do not develop with naturalshrinkage and expansion.Other methods of vertical claddingcan also be employed by staggeringoverlaps with boards on top of boards.Diagonal boardingProvides an alternative appearance.Overlapping boards are not suitable.Tongued and grooved boards shouldbe installed tongue upwards. Ensurecounterbattening is done to provideventilation.ArborClad wish to thank wood for good and TRADAfor their invaluable assistance in compiling this brochure.External Cladding 05

WITH IMPROVED STABILITY AND DURABILITY QUALITIES, THERMALLY TREATEDCLADDING PROVIDES ADDED LONG TERM BENEFITS AND FLEXIBILITY.Heat treatment (within a range of 160ºC to 215ºC) hasthe effect of modifying the properties of wood. The thermaltreatment process consists of heating wood to temperaturesexceeding its spontaneous combustion temperature with thewater vapour present having a protective function. A naturalprocess, the varying temperatures, varying treatmentduration and varying drying techniques require no chemicaladditives and impart new properties to the treated wood.Through the treatment applied, the timber is less proneto absorb or lose moisture, helping to restrict the potentialfor swelling, shrinkage or distortion.During the thermal treatment process, the wood alsoacquires a beautiful brown colour and its velvet-like surfaceis pleasant to the touch. At its best, the wood possessesnuances of antique and fine wood shades that bring warmthto any project, be this for an internal or external application.ArborClad has chosen to work with the world’s leadingsuppliers of thermally treated timbers. ArborClad Thermo-DRedwood undergoes the traditional heat treatment cyclewhich the Finnish Thermowood Association has developed, approved and promoted since their formation in 1985.A Thermo-S cycle of heat treatment is available, butthis is only for products which are to be used in internalapplications and it looks as though this process willgradually be phased out over the coming years.Additionally, we are happy to offer to our customersArborClad Thermo-D Platowood Spruce and Hardwood.Platowood, of Holland, are one of the world’s innovators inheat treatment of wood and have a unique pedigree ofsupply into today’s cladding market. The Platowood heattreatment process is a longer treatment which, in the case ofthe spruce, actually enhances the timber durability. The ArborClad cladding range has been selected usingtimbers sourced only from well managed and sustainableforests to ensure that a full Chain of Custody certification canbe achieved. As one of the founder members of the ForestsForever initiative and supporters of wood for good, we feel itis our responsibility to provide environmental solutions forthe timber cladding market today.FLEXIBLE PERFORMANCEWith high performance qualities, thermally treatedwood can be used for a wide variety of applicationsand even the most demanding of situationsCost effective alternative to traditional materials •Treatment applied through the full section •Service life of up to 30 years •No additional treatment or finishing required •Moisture content reduced •Improved rot resistance •Weather resistance increased •Removal of resin •Deformation reduced •Increased stability & durability •Resistant to beetle and insect attack •TIMBER CLADDING, WHEN LEFT IN ITS NATURAL STATE, WILL OXIDISE AND TURN ASILVER GREY COLOUR OVER TIME, DUE TO THE EFFECTS OF EXPOSURE TO SUNLIGHT.THERMALLY TREATED TIMBER TENDS TO DO THIS IN A MORE UNIFORM AND EVENMANNER DUE TO THE REDUCED LEVELS OF MOISTURE IN THE TIMBER.08 External Cladding

INSTALLATIONGUIDELINESTimber is a natural product and providing it is treated in accordance with the manufacturersrecommendations it will remain looking good and will last a lifetime. The following installationguidelines are additional areas you may wish to consider when selecting and fitting your externalcladding. For further information please refer to the manufacturers recommendations.Part 1. The basic rulesfor installing claddingFixing external claddingSoftwoodStainless steel annular ring shank/round head nailsare appropriate for fixing softwood cladding:• The nail length is generally minimum 50mm or2.5 times the thickness of the board being fixedwhichever is the greater and should be punchedslightly below the wood’s surface.• Boards over 100mm wide should have double fixings.• Make sure that butt joints always meet onsufficient batten support width.• It’s preferable to use stainless steel nails forall species but especially those with a hightannin content, and they are essential fortimbers installed ‘green’. By using StainlessSteel this avoids permanent staining due tothe reaction of the tannin on mild steel orgalvanised nails.HardwoodStainless steel screws/annular ring shank nails are the preferredmethod of fixing for hardwood boards. Stainless steel screwsare preferable, and essential for timbers installed ‘green’:• Slight over-drilling of the screw holes will allow forany movement in the wood and prevent splits.Countersinking screws is also recommended.• Where ‘green’ wood is used, it may be necessaryto fit washers to the screws to maintain the fixingsecurity. This can become a design feature.• Metal clips, which also provide a ‘secret fix’ effect, mayalso be considered. Screw fixings should be minimum40mm or half the width of the board, whichever is thegreat, from the end of the boards to avoid splitting.20 External Cladding

Part 2. Types ofcladding installationBoard sizesHorizontal boards:• Shiplap or feather edge type boards should havea minimum of 10mm overlap, but allow 2mm gapsbetween the upstands for movement in the timber.• Tongued and grooved boards should have amaximum face width of 150mm, with a 2mmclearance above the tongue for expansion. Most commercially produced profiles will includethese tolerances. Install with the tongue upwards.• Open joint boards should have an 8-15mm gapat the ‘water face’. Chamfered edges allow theboards to overlap slightly, reducing any exposureof the cavity.Vertical boards:• The face width of vertical boards should not exceed150mm. The most versatile fixing method is board onboard. Any overlap should be a minimum of 20mm.Diagonal boards:• Should be fixed on battens, as for vertical boards, taking into consideration the comments above foroverlaps or tongue and groove styles.Using battensUse battens that are preservative treated and structurallygraded to ensure they are able to carry the weight of theboard material. Fix horizontal boards to vertical battens, taking care where boards are jointed to ensure they sitsecurely on sufficient batten width. Conversely, fix verticalboards to horizontal battens, with vertical ‘counter’battens to facilitate drainage and ventilation. Supportbattens should be fixed at spacings of no more than600mm, whether vertical or horizontal. And atno more than 400mm for diagonal boards. These spacings will maintain the overall stabilityof the cladding.Remember the cavityThe timber cladding you are fixing to the buildingis effectively an outer layer of protection againstthe elements. However, a cavity should be formedbehind the cladding to allow any water or moisturethat might penetrate the cladding to escape. This ensures internal and external surfaces of thewood maintain a similar moisture content, reducingthe potential for movement and distortion, allowingventilation between the inner and outer surfaces. The cavity should be at least 19mm wide, but maybe wider, depending on the thickness of fixing battens.A weatherproof membrane is usually required toprotect the structure, although this may not be neededon masonry. Additionally, if not sealed a fly screemembrane should also be used to prevent insectinfiltration.Part 3.Precautions forbottom fixingExternal Cladding 21

Part 4.Cladding detailsWindow and door openingsOpenings within a wall require special attentionto avoid the need to notch or split the boards. These openings need to be dimensionally compatiblewith the cladding to provide a good appearance aswell as allowing for fixings. Thought also needs tobe given to the 3-dimensional relationship of anyflashings, sills etc. to allow for adequate drainageof water from the cladding surface and board ends.Corner detailsThis is an important area of fixing detail, not justaesthetically but functionally, to ensure adequateprotection against water.Mitring boards at corners is not recommended forpre-finished products, as natural movement of thetimber will allow the joint to open, causing failureof the surface coating and water ingress.Mitring the ends of boards can be considered, butit is advisable to provide a gap between any adjoiningsurfaces and pre-finishing/treating all exposed ends.Internal and external corners are more easily detailedon vertical boarding. These can be jointed by ‘tonguingand grooving’ to give added stability and protection.Solutions for internal cladding anglesTimber allows for a wide variety of design options for finishing. These can be simple solutions orbespoke profile manufacture. Below are just a few commonly used solutions for forming internal angles.Solutions for external cladding anglesTimber allows for a wide variety of design options for finishing.
