2009 Spellman2Dear Alumni, Parents, Faculty and Friends of Spellman,A memorable phrase from the writings of Saint Paul seems more than appropriate at thistime: “dedicate your lives to thankfulness”. St Paul certainly encouraged the early Christiancommunities, and by extension, he urges us too, always to have a spirit of gratitude for whatwe have been given. In presenting this Annual Report to you, Cardinal Spellman High School once again expressesits gratitude to each and every one of you for your generosity and support. Spellman’s pastis full of accomplishment, and because of your generous support, its future is bright withpromise. Your support enables Spellman to fulfill its mission of providing opportunities for ourstudents to maximize their potential within a Catholic environment as we strive to prepare youngmen and women to achieve academic success, to embrace Gospel values, to respect themselvesand others and to be of service to their community, to their church and to the world. Please accept“Keep our entire Spellman family in your thoughts and prayers; commit yourselvesto continuing your efforts to advance the mission of this wonderful school.”a sincere thank you to all who are listed in this report. Know, too, that the grateful prayers of the Spellman community arewith you. Thank you, also, to our dedicated Advancement Staff and phonathon volunteers. Your leadership and involvementconstitute a tremendous vote of confidence in Spellman and for this I am most appreciative. In closing, I ask that you keep our entire Spellman family in your thoughts and prayers and that you commit yourselves to continuingyour efforts to advance the mission of this wonderful school and to collaborate with one another in weaving our proud past into apowerful future. Know that I am counting on your prayers too, as I begin a new chapter in my life.God bless and reward each one of you for your goodness to our school.Sister Thomasine Knowlton, CSJThe Sisters of St. Joseph: A Milestone YearDay 1 at Cardinal Spellman. CardinalCushing and Cardinal Spellman atopening day of Cardinal Spellman 1962.The year marked the last year in residence by the people who started it all;the Sisters of St. Joseph. Praying, educating, leading, developing character, guiding others to experience their God. Doing all these things on a singleday is hard enough. Doing all these things for a week is even harder. Doingall these things everyday for a lifetime…now that’s remarkable. WhileSpellman will be different without their daily presence, it will never forgettheir dedication and contribution to thousands over the past 50 years.Thank you, Sisters of St.Joseph.“Little is known of Joseph. He was husband, father, provider, everyday. And…. he haddreams. What more can be said?”“Living your life faithfully is a very difficult feat. Nevertheless, that is exactlywhat was accomplished so gracefully by these special women. And whiletheir lifelong endeavor is indeed remarkable…it is not what makes themunique. What makes them unique is that they lived their lives, everyday, outof love. We all can understand just how difficult that can be.”

Annual ReportDear Spellman Community:On behalf of the Board of Trustees of Cardinal SpellmanHigh School, it is a pleasure to welcome our new President,Dr. John McEwan.John is an extraordinary man. His personal life and hisprofessional life exemplify what Cardinal Spellman is about. And why not, John is himself a Spellman grad! John’s contemporary, sophisticatedand balanced understanding of the role he has ahead of him is impressive. Heunderstands students and how they think. He understands faculty and what ittakes to motivate educational professionals to the highest levels of accountability. He also understands the administrative and business sides of running a school, anincreasingly urgent requirement. Most important of all, John understands howall this must be accomplished while simultaneously maintaining our unendingeagerness to hold true to our Catholic foundation. John has the completesupport of the Board of Trustees and we urge strongly that all students, faculty, administration and staff watch and learn from him. Along with John we mustdemonstrate a hunger for change and a healthy obsession with achieving 21stcentury assets and methods. If we do not, the price will be paid by our kids in theclassroom and this price is unacceptable.Spellman has been blessed with exceptional leadership from Sr. Thomasine andthe Sisters of Saint Joseph for decades. We thank Sister Thomasine and her fellowreligious for their service, commitment and ministry. We accept willingly the torchas it is passed by them to all of us who care deeply, as we do, about Spellman andall that the school means and offers for kids and for our community. Many thingswill be different at Spellman going forward and different is not per se bad. Openminds; a thirst for learning; a willingness to take some risks; and a continuingcommitment to our faith will produce extraordinary results. We will be the bestCatholic Co-Ed High School in Massachusetts, with your help and generosity!Welcome, Dr. McEwan and thank you, Sister Thomasine and Sisters of St. Joseph! For the Board of TrusteesBarry C. The Tournament has come to be known as the “Duck Classic”. Once again, the driving rains were no match for the indomitablespirit of the alumni who played through the stormy weather and still delivered proceeds of over $24,000. The dedication demonstratedon that day by the alumni and staff was nothing short of remarkable and is still another testament to the “Spirit of Spellman”. We thankall those who sponsored, participated in and “toughed out ” this event. A special thanks to the sponsors, and participants in making theevent a success, especially the Golf Committee Chairmen, Matt Glynn ‘75 and Tim Stearns ‘75.
