CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGEAdvances in infonnalion and communicalion technology (ICT) have done more than anything else todrive the last decade's economic boom and the integmtion of markets around the planet- Sinceteleconmunicalions play an important role in the development of ICT as well as socio-economiccondition of a country, development of telecommurication is essential.Bangladesh T & T Board (BTTB), the only public sector telephone service provider, is doing the bestwith its limited resources to proYide most advanced telecommunication seflices to lts valuablesubscribers. To this end, all the district headquarlers & more than 175 upazillas have been equipped withdrgital exchanges.BTIB has a firm pohcy to digitalize the complete network as soon as possible Digitalization of BTTBnetworks started back in the year 1983 and over the past few years, the installarion of digital equipmenthas increased considerably. In the age of infomalon technology (IT), a robust and efficient nalonal ransmission system isrequired to support telecommunication and data cornmunications, as well as the IT activities of a country. With this end in view BTTB is gradually supplementing/ rePlacing microwave links by high speed andbroadband Optcal Fibrc Netpork.BTTB has started provlding Intemet services. At present, ihe seflices cover 64 distnct headquartersand 175 upazillas/ growth cenfies. Plans are under way to extent the faci]ilies to all upazrlla headquartefivery soonBT]B has joined a consofirum named SEA ME-WE-4 to install Submadre Optical Fibre CableContract has been signed between lwo intemational fiIms (contractor) and 16 Parties of 14 countnes on27 March. 2005 in Dubai Installalion work of submarine cable is going on accordingly lt will providebroadband connectivity to the global informaton super highway, enabling better overseds gate-wayfacilities for data communications as well as voice communications fbr public and Pdvate operators. lt tsexpected that Bangladesh will get connectivity with the infomation super highway tluough thrsSubmarine Cable by end of2005.BTTB is implementing\its Mobite phone project, of which the 'TELETAIK' Mobile Phone Servicehas already been introduced.BTTB is cornmitted to expand.the Teleconrmunication network of the country by introducing latesttechnology and also to contribute a sizable amount of revenue to Govt exchequer'I hope that, thls Annual Repofi will be helpful for better undentanding of the activities of the BTTB.Due to some unavotdable circumstances the Amual Report could not be published earlier, although weput our best efforts to minimize delay However, ihere might be some shortcomings and oversight in therepoft. I2.2 Publi( Tel€phones :Several years back public telephone services used to be provided through coin boxes in the urban areasand land lin€y' wiretess Public Call OfEces (P.C.O'S) in the rural areas. Service quality of these publictelephones had be€n far from satisfactory. To improve 6e public telephone service, Card Phone sysbmswere intmduced in 1992 wit}l programs of replacin8 t|e old coin boxes and PC.O'S . By June 2004, about1,507 card phone booths were installed in differcnt parts of the country All cardphones have access tonation wide dialing while 271 of them have intemational direct dialing facility. Due to better and easypublic accessibilily to telephone this cardphotre se ice has become popular in the country , A massiveprogram of installing card phones has been taken to cover all thanas and rural gowth centres of thecountry.2.3 Tel€graph Services.Telegraph syslem, the oldest means of telecorrununication service, is loosing impofiance graduallydue to iniroduction of more modem teleconmuDication systems In the fi$cal year 2003-2004, the rotalDumber of domestic telegram essages were 268,4!8 and drat of international telegram vtas 25,3'7'7Number of Telegraph Offrces were 849.
