--IN REPLY--There are but two known copies of the New Testament, inGreek, ante-dating the fifth century: these are known amongscholars as the Sinaitic and Vatican manuscripts. They are giventhe same date,-- about A.D. 350--though by some the Sinaitic, which was most recently found, by Prof. Cons. Tischendorf in1859, is supposed to date a little earlier. The Vatican MS. came into the possession of European scholarsin 1475 A.D., and is known from other more recent VaticanMSS. by its number, 1209. It is very accurate so far as it goes, but it is of no authority on the clause of Rev. 20:5 in question, because it is defective, incomplete, --the Epistle to the Hebrewsfrom 9:15 to close is lacking, as well as all of the Epistles toTimothy, Titus, and Philemon, and the book of Revelation. The Sinaitic MS., remarkable as being the oldest as well as forits completeness and accuracy, is therefore the only Greekauthority on Revelation ante-dating the fifth century: and it doesnot contain the clause, of Rev. 20:5, in dispute.Regarding your question, as to our authority and information,we would say: We do not possess these old manuscripts and donot hope to--they are esteemed as of almost priceless valueamong scholars. The Sinaitic is now in the possession of theRussian government at St. Petersburg. However, at greatexpense, borne by the Czar of Russia, Prof. Tischendorf, thefinder, published an exact copy of this MS. And later, for thebenefit of the general public, Mr. T. prepared and published, in1869, the common version of our English New Testament, withfoot-notes showing all instances in which it varies from the threeoldest Greek MSS.--the Sinaitic, and Vatican, above mentioned, and the Alexandrine, a later and less accurate MS. This work ina small form, cheaply bound in cloth, can be ordered throughyour nearest book-seller. Its retail price is one dollar. We hope, at some time ere long, to get out a copy of this lastmentioned edition in cheaper form, for the benefit of all oursubscribers; being desirous that they should all enjoy thebenefits and information thus afforded.====================R1108 : page 7A SUCCESSFUL MINISTER.[The following is from Brother Weber of Maryland.
