Someeleven years ago she was a lawless Roman Catholic rumsellerthere. Her conversion (a most remarkable one) occurred in theprison, where she was confined for repeated violation of theliquor laws. When she was released, she poured to waste all ofher liquors and renounced the Roman Catholic Religion. As shelived in the midst of an Irish Catholic community, herpersecutions were terrible. Her children were hooted, peltedwith stones, and abused in every conceivable manner. She wascursed and slandered before her face and behind her back.They even soaped the stairs of her dwelling to cause her to falland maim or kill herself. The priest visited her, and when hefound that she was firm in her determination to serve Christrather than the devil, he cursed her and persuaded her husbandto abandon her and declared that she should never have aCatholic dollar, and said they would drive her from her home.They broke the window panes in her house, and for two yearsshe was obliged to keep them stuffed with rags, etc., being toopoor to afford to replace the glass. She united with the Baptistchurch and was most zealous in her missionary efforts to bringothers into that "communion." She soon ceased to have herhunger satisfied with the husks of the less popish branch ofBabylon and longed forR1099 : page 7
