advantage to mankind; and (2) to those other, but somewhatsimilar mental gifts, but with other mental combinations, whichconstitute business talent, exhibited in men whose genius is seennot in the constructing and organizing of machinery, but in theconstruction, organization and successful operation of extensiveworks and commercial enterprises which furnish to hundreds offellow-men (laborers, tradesmen, architects, engineers, overseers, book and time keepers, etc., etc.) steady andremunerative employment.Without the mechanical inventors and contrivers with theirpeculiar mental talent, the world would be without itstelephones, telegraphs, railroads, steamboats, and ten thousandother conveniences which go to make our day so far superior tothe days of water-power and ox-teams. This talent is really andrightly the master quality among men; because it is the one uponwhich the amalgamation and co-operation of society depends. Itis this quality which in another field constitutes the realstatesman. We do not claim that this ability is always directed inaccordance with the golden rule; but neither is that of the artisanand others.
