doctrine of eternal torment, and still do, and just as zealouslynow claim to be "orthodox" on this subject-- that they now holdthe teachings of the founders of the various sects. It is this verycandor, too, no doubt, which prevents many Presbyterians fromnow changing, to suit the public, a creed which still expressestheir honest convictions of the teachings of the Bible. Let ushonor and respect their candor, however much we maydisrespect their creed. We wish it were true that all other Christians had outgrown thathorrible nightmare conceived by Papacy during the dark ages. But it is not true: the majority of Christian people, including theministers, still hold to this horrible doctrine though their reasonsand hearts rebel against it. The reason is, that they think it to bethe teaching of the Bible, and it is their very desire to remainanchored to God's Word, that (through a false interpretation ofits parables, dark sayings and symbols,) holds them to a doctrinewhich they feel keenly is a slander upon the character of any justand holy being.Under these circumstances doubts and fears take possession oftheir minds. But we must not let themalone as they desire us to do; love for them, and for our Master'shonor, and for the Truth, compels us to cry aloud and spare not,but show God's people their errors (Isa. 58:1), and cause such asreally are earnest and honest and seeking for the truth, to see thebeauty and grandeur of God's Word and his gracious plantherein revealed.Nor must those who have the harmonizing truth be slack in thiswork: the time for labor is short. If not soon convinced of thetrue teachings of the Bible, which so fully satisfies andconvinces the sanctified reason, they will soon openly reject it.The opportunity for convincing them of the real grandeur of the
