***Many conscientious and even benevolent minds fail to seewherein the present social structure is unfair, or wherein itgrants greater privileges to one than to another; and inamazement they inquire: "Do you mean to suggest that all who,by careful, prudent living, by industry and temperance in allthings, have accumulated a few hundred or a few thousanddollars for their old age, that they may not be chargeable to any, should divide this product of industry and frugality with otherswho have been too indolent to work, or who have wasted theirearnings in a wild, profligate course, and who would soon wastealso the accumulations of others to their own injury?"No; such a view is held by few--by very few, if any, even amongthe reckless, professed anarchists. And theresult must be to reduce labor to the lowest point and keep itthere; and to produce combinations and trusts, to offsetcompetition and add thereby to the wealth and influence of thosewho have capital, and to keep at the foot of the ladder those whohave none. Nor would a reconstruction in this line imply thesame reward for unskilled, uneducated labor as for skill andeducation: we have this also illustrated in the Government andin the Postoffice, where various salaries are paid according toproficiency and ability, but where selfishness and greed can
