To his own thy Savior givethDaily strength; To each troubled soul that liveth,Peace at length;Weakest lambs have largest shareOf this tender Shepherd's care;Ask him not, then, 'When?' or 'How?'Only bow!"====================R1134 : page 3PROTESTANTS, AWAKE!THE SPIRIT OF THE GREAT REFORMATION --DYING.--HOW PRIESTCRAFT NOW OPERATES.The attitude of Rome on the public school question in thiscountry, her increasing power and prestige in places of authorityand influence throughout "Christendom," the attention shecalled to herself in the late celebration of the Papal Jubilee, theflatteries and honors she received from crowned heads and evenfrom this great Republic, together with her renewed claim oftemporal power and her manifest determination to regain it,whenever the auspicious moment to strike for it shall come, arefacts which should arouse every Protestant, every true Christian,to a sense of the danger to which liberty and truth andrighteousness are exposed from their old and wily foe andrelentless persecutor, the Church of Rome.It has been well said that eternal vigilance is the price of liberty:and truly it is the price of every principle of truth andrighteousness which we desire to hold; because unceasingvigilance, art, cunning craft, unscrupulous hypocrisy andunblushing impudence are the characteristics of Satan, "theprince of this world" (John 14:30; Eph. 2:2), who, unrecognizedby men, is constantly manipulating human affairs, civil andreligious, for the accomplishment of his own diabolical purposesin the enslavement of humanity to the dictum of ignobletyranny. And yet, it is quite manifest that Protestants, listlessly resting infancied security, have long since ceased to be vigilant; and themasses of them are almost totally unaware of the presentperilous position, or the dangers ahead. But if they will carefullytake their bearings, they will soon see that much has been lostalready, and hence the present vantage ground of the greatenemy to true religion and to civil and religious liberty, concerning which Macaulay the historian remarks truly, that"among all the contrivances which have been devised fordeceiving and oppressing mankind, it [the Church of Rome]occupies the highest place."
