It follows that conceit springs from ignorance andthoughtlessness. It is consistent only with narrow views of theworld and of life. It makes precisely the mistake of the oldastronomy, which supposed our world to be the central andlargest one of the system, simply because it knew so little ofother worlds. The conceited man magnifies his own importanceonly because he does not know what real greatness is. He isgreat in his own eyes only because his eyes can see nothing trulygreat.Conceit arises from a low estimate of other men. Estimates ofourselves, as well as of other men, are relative. All selfmeasurementsinvolve measurement of others. It results fromthis, that there is no way by which the conceit can be taken outof a man so effectually as by bringing him into a clearcomparison and sharp competition with other men. This is thereason why it has become proverbial that school-life--especiallycollege-life--will be likely to cure boys and young men of theirconceit. In the class-room they are brought into closecompetition, in which even the best scholar is sure to besometimes outdone by other men. Thus every man is frequentlycompelled to a tacit acknowledgement of others' superiority, andthat in their very presence. This kind of life forbids to men theeasy and flattering method of "comparing themselves withthemselves," which is the great promoter of conceit.This is the reason why the process of education tends to cureconceit. The men who recover from it least, are the men whohave too little perception to discover clearly, or too littlesensitiveness to feel keenly, the superiority of others. The sameprinciple holds in the great school of life. No man can remainpersistently conceited, who has any adequate appreciation of themerits and attainments of his fellow-men. A man may beconscious that he has done his best, and may feel a keensatisfaction in this fact; but any large knowledge of men willshow him how often his work has been equaled and surpassed.The real scholar is compelled to think modestly of hisproductions; for he well knows how thorough and successfulhave been the labors of others in the same or similar fields. Hewho is most likely to suppose that he has done a great service toscience, is the tyro who does not know what others haveaccomplished.We estimate ourselves by comparison. The more widely andtruly we know men, the more we shall see we are frequentlyequaled and surpassed. Candid estimates of ourselves bycomparison with others will make us think soberly, and judgeourselves modestly. Conceit has no more fruitful root than anarrow knowledge and prejudiced estimate of the labors andworth of others.Conceit involves a faulty self-knowledge.
