Christian Fuchs: Social Networking Sites and the Surveillance Societysurveillance. There are many remaining research questions that can be tasks for future research. Thestudy at hand focused on the relationship of surveillance and the use of socialnetworking sites by students in Salzburg, Austria. Such studies could also beundertaken beyond the local context, for example at the national or the European level. Also comparative studies between different localities, nations, cultures, and continentswould be interesting. The study at hand was focused at students. Students are certainlyearly adopters of new technologies and therefore of primary interest for social researchbecause their technology usage might anticipate larger societal trends. But nonethelessit is also important to study the use of new technologies by other groups that arefrequently more disadvantaged in technology use than students and thereforeconfronted with additional problems. Therefore another potential task for futureresearch is to study the relationship of surveillance and social networking sites forwhole populations and for groups other than students.107
