of the old nature and newness of life as a new creature in ChristJesus, bears unmistakably the stamp of God, and is of God-- forit speaks according to his Word. ====================R267 : page 87PART IV.----------THE DAY OF JUDGMENT.VERY confused notions are held by many as to the work ofjudgment in the future age. The popular idea on the subjectbeing something like this:The Father, robed as a judge, with stern aspect, is seated on agreat white throne. By his side stands the Savior with lovingeyes and pleading face. The world of mankind is marshaledbefore him. They come up in close ranks, and with downcastfaces toward the Judge. The very large majority are commandedto depart toward the left. Trembling with despair they hurryaway, and are at once seized by a guard of demons, and swiftlydragged, shrieking with terror, down--down--down. In theadvancing throng, there comes now and then one, who is at oncerecognized by the Savior as a true Christian, and introduced tothe Father as such, who welcomes him to the right hand, wherehe is immediately crowned, and seated with the angels to viewthe remainder of the solemn scene. This separating work is tocontinue until all who have ever lived have passed the tribunal;the whole period of time occupied, being something less thantwenty-four hours, thus constituting "the day of judgment." Thegreater number of these, it is generally thought, have alreadybeen once judged (at death) and allotted to their final destiny inheaven or hell, but for some inconceivable reason they arebrought again before the judgment seat, and are again remandedto their former condition.R267 : page 88While some features of this picture are drawn from symbolicBible imagery, the conception as a whole is very far from beinga scriptural one. As to the gathering of the world before theJudge in a kind of military review, and the immediate separationof the classes, while it is the likeness in the figure, it is ofnecessity as far from the real as a type is from its antitype.THREE GREAT PERIODS OF SEPARATIONare, we think, clearly revealed in God's Word: "The separationof the chaff from the wheat," Matt. 3:10,12; "the tares from thewheat," Matt. 13:37,43; and "the sheep from the goats," Matt.25:31.
