YEAR 2010TRIP TO IRELAND FOR THE PJCThe PJC is already on a journey!Saturday 16th of October somemembers of the PJC (PiemonteseJunior Club) flew from Bergamoairport to Dublin, Ireland. Thenext day we moved toward theSouth and started the tour tolocal farms guided by MichelFennelly, President of the IrishPiemontese Society. First of all Iwant to highlight the kind availabilityand the warm welcomingof the Irish breeders whoalways also treated us with deliciousmeals. The agriculturaland breeding systems are differentthan ours: the weather andclimate allow the pasturage fora long part of the year, besidethere isn’t so much hay croppingbecause of the wet andhumid weather conditions. Theanimals for fattening are fedmainly with straw, concentrateand addition of other feed stuffas sugar beet. The Piemontesebreed is quite appreciated andis used for crossbreeding withother beef breeds or also bred aspurebred: in this case we definitelysaw very good animals andAndrea Colomberothe breeders showed a very highlevel about our breed. We also had pleasant time ofentertainment as the hurlingmatch, a very popular sport inIreland, and the dogs race:always with a good beer, ofcourse. Our stay ended on Wednesdaythe 20th visiting Dublin beforegoing back to Italy. For the breedersto travel is a rare opportunityand when it happens wetry to take the best from a professionaland personal point ofview. Even this trip has beenextremely interesting for us aswe got to know different farmingsystems. On behalf of the PJC I like tothank the Irish PiemonteseSociety for all they did for us.Grazie e arrivederci!8Michael Fennelly president of the Irish Society (second from left standing) and Paolo Demarchi, president of the PJC(third from right standing) with the Italian and Irish breeders.

YEAR 2010Is it possible to improve the animalstemperament through the selection? The availability of docile animalsand easy to handle is atrait that, in farming, is turningto be more andmore importantthrough the years.Even if it doesn'tshow any economicadvantage, having adocile herd can getthe management ofthe shed easier andreduce the risks ofaccidents both forpeople and animals.Talking about temperamentwe mean theattitude from the animalto relate to thehumans; there is alsoa component concerningto the behaviour towardits likes.Changing of the farmsThe farms registered in theHerd Book have constantlyincreased their size going from34 animals (average) in 1985to over 65 in the farms today.Beside the sizes in the lastyears also the management ofthe herd had changed: freestalling spread both for breedingthe cows and for the fattening.Milking the cowsbecame less frequent and thecalves are reared in pens alwayswith the mothers till weaning. All these sides caused a substantialdecrease of interactionbetween the breeder and hisanimals; the direct contactsare limited in few occasionsduring the animal life: calvings, inseminations, sanitary treatments, transfers.Furthermore breeding of thecalves under the mothersAndrea AlberaGiacomo GrilloneSecond test phase:scared calf searching for a way outincreased the protectioninstinct by the cows that sometimecan bring to some dangerousaggressions for the personswho get inside the cows“territory”.For all these reasons checkingif the selection could supplymore docile animals is surelyinteresting. How can we check the temperament? To select a trait requires alwaysmeasures about the trait itself. In this case it's not easy todefine a method of collectingaccurate and objective data.Several and different methodshave been suggested all basedon the animal reactions whenapproached by a person: theyevaluate the minimum distancebefore the animal goes awayor the speed of going away.Other methods involve thatthe operator makes the animalget in a delimited part of apen. These methods requirespecial facilities with specificsizes and might be dangerous.Another side to consideris the age of theanimal: in general it'sbetter to do the trialjust before the weaningfirst of all forsecurity and thenbecause the attitudeof the animals itself isnot yet influenced bythe human contacts.Cattle learn from pastexperiences andmight modify theirbehaviour. Someresearches even pointout that there mightbe also a maternalinfluence: calves from aggressivecows could turn to be lessdocile.Collecting temperamentdata in PiemonteseSince some years Anaborapihas collected data about animals'temperament. Due topractical reasons the observationsare led on the calves atthe Test Station in Carrù.Since 2006 the temperamenttest is made at the end of theperformance test, when theanimals are aged about 12months. The observation isdone during the measuring:each young bull gets a scorefrom 1 to 4 depending on thedifficulties in handling him.Low codes are for docile animalswhile high codes are forthe more nervous ones.Even if this test is showinginteresting data it has somelimits: the animals are notvery young anymore and the9

YEAR 201010score are given with a fairlygeneric method. To improve the quality of thedata, beginning from April2010 Anaborapi started incontemporary also a new test, more specific and completelydedicated to the temperament. The test is led on 5 mothscalves, when they are movedfrom the quarantine shed tothe Test Station. The changeof shed allows us to make thetest in a completely unknownenvironment for the calvescausing a stress condition thatemphasises the individual differencesin the temperament. The trial is divided in 4 phasesand each calve is isolated fromthe other of his group. In the first step the calf is leftalone in the pen and his behaviouris evaluated without anyhuman presence: he mightexplore quite the new place oreven be extremely fidgety. The second step is about thereaction of the calve when anoperator gets in the pen: mostof the calves reach the oppositeside of the box, some getcloser to the operator, otherslook frenzy for a way out. Inthe next step the operator triesto touch the calf: even in thisThird test phase:docile calf accepting the contactcase some accept the contactfor longer other for just amoment and other very scaredrun awayIn the last phase we check theway the calf goes from the pento the corridor testing the easein finding the way out and thespeed of going away in thecorridor. In all these phases an operatorplaced not so close to the pengives the temperament code toeach animal using a score from1 to 4.First resultsThe analysis of the data collectedtill now shows that thereare differences among animalsin both the trials:12 and 5months. (Chart 1)The amount of data collectedtill now doesn't allow us tostate if these differences aredue to the genetic. In the data collected at 5 monthsthe results are as expected:the observations in phases 2,3and 4 are very much correlated, all of them value the interactionof the calves with manwhile in the first phase aremore independent becausethey value the restlessness ofthe calves when they get in anew environment. The observations at 12 monthsshow a relation betweenthe size of the animal and histemperament: restless calvestrend to be lighter at the endof the performance test. Thismight indicate that more nervousanimals waste more energyand have less growing ratesthan calmer animals. Even thefarm where they come fromhas an influence on the temperamentat 12 months.Considering that the calves getin the Anaborapi Test Stationat 50 days it's surprising howjust the first weeks in the farmcan influence in such strongand permanent way on theirtemperament. A comparestudy among the farm of provenience, divided accordingthe type of management, showedthat in the farms wherethe calves are separated fromthe mothers for a long part ofthe day, the animals are moreChart 1: Percentage distribution of the temperamentscore evaluated at 12 months1 - docile 2 - normal 3 - restless 4 - very fidgety

Due to hispedigree Opel has several limits in his use: not with the daughters of Zaino, Iride, Icaro, Indice, Genepì,Fino and all the descendents of Delano.ORIGANOIT004990425357born 14.09.2007GENETIC VALUEBreeding 125Meat 134Muscularity 112Growing 108Birth ease 135Calving ease 108Size 104Correctness 108Breeder: Bosio Elio Sebastiano - Fossano (CN)Pedigree Parents indicesbreeding meat birth calvingfather LASER (AI) 129 132 129 116mother IRIDE 111 112 113 111Pat. grandfather ZAINO (AI)Mat. grandfather CROSS (AI)Performance Test - fenotipic dataweight beginn. weight end daily gain withers height trunk lenght chest girth99 508 1.35 120 146 193With Origano we go back to a sire with excellent birth ease, so perfect to be used on heifers. Comparedto Oggi and Olivo, Origano has a superior structure, bigger size and more productive traits. Son of Laserand descendent of Cross, Origano has one of the highest birth ease among the sires with semen available. His offspring have a very good muscularity and good growing considered that he is a sire for heifers. Thanks to the influence of Cross, but also to Laser, the calving ease of Origano should be better thanthe average so it’s possible to keep them for breeding.Origano shouldn’t be used on all the cows coming from the Zaino line, in particular the daughters ofNobel and on the daughters of Ragun, Quark and Gecco.13

In his pedigree there is Ispanico, sire with excellent growing from the line Cedro and motherBarona, daughter of Turbo and mother of Lotus. Orso is a very big size bull and gives to his progenyvery high growing rates but also an excellent muscularity. With these extreme traits of course Orso givesheavy calves and needs to be used with care. His birth ease is slightly better than Opel, but also in thiscase he has to be mated with adult cows and good calving capacity. From his daughters we expect a goodcalving ease so we suggest to rear them. Avoid matings with the daughters of Cedro, Focus, Larice,Indovino, Zaino, Lotus, Genepì, Indice, Icaro, Orgoglio, Oslo and Occitano.OTTAVOIT001990286761born 15.10.2007GENETIC VALUEBreeding 120Meat 111Muscularity 113Growing 109Birth ease 93Calving ease 121Size 109Correctness 97Breeder: Ferrero Roberto e Bruno - Villastellone (TO)Pedigree Parents indicesbreeding meat birth calvingfather MONDO (AI) 120 128 128 103mother FULVIA 117 99 78 133Pat. grandfather GLOBO (AI)Mat. grandfather BRASIL (AI)Performance Test - fenotipic dataweight beginn. weight end daily gain withers height trunk lenght chest girth107 535 1.46 123 149 196Ottavo is son of Mondo and descendent of Brasil.
