KAREL APPEL (1921-2006) was a Dutch painter, sculptor, and poet. Hestarted painting at the age of fourteen and studied at the Rijksakademiein Amsterdam in the 1940s. He was one of the founders of the avantgardemovement Cobra in 1948. He was influenced by Pablo Picasso,Henri Matisse and the French Art Brut artist Jean Dubuffet. In breakingwith his Amsterdam youth, Appel distanced himself from the Cobra groupand became part of a group of artists known as Art Informel. Centered onMichel Tapié, the group included artists such as Henri Michaux, Willem deKooning, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Jackson Pollock and Sam Francis.
