He was 80.He died Feb. 4 in Delaware, according to Haley FuneralDirectors in the Detroit suburb of Southfield, Mich., whichis handling arrangements.Byrd, who was also a pioneer in jazz education, movedto New York in 1955 after playing in military bands inthe Air Force. The trumpeter, whose given name wasDonaldson Toussaint L’Ouverture Byrd II, rose to nationalprominence when he joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengerslater that year.Associated PressFOALS: Holy FireWarner Canada, 4.5/5Between their debut Antidotes (2008) and 2010’s Total LifeForever, Foals untangled the knots in their sound. What wasonce tightly wound and anxious became quite loose.Holy Fire is a bit of both. It has some wide-screen moments, but gets tighter when it needs to. It isn’t a tremendousevolution, instead refining Foals’ sound for bigger and bettereffect. It lacks the drag that comes with a band trying toreconfigure themselves, leaving 11 good to great new waverock songs for your everyday walkabout.LE1F: Fly ZoneSelf-released, 3.5/5If being an openly gay rapper wasn’t such an apparentcontradiction, New Yorker Le1f’s sexuality wouldn’t be worthmentioning. Le1f doesn’t wear his outsidership like a badge, and doesn’t let himself be defined by sex.Fly Zone doesn’t use Le1f’s superficially unique quality as acheap publicity hook. Instead he makes his case by effortlesslyintegrating with a notoriously homophobic genre, and doesfellow marginalized rappers a greater service than he couldwith any overt socio-political statements.BOATS: A Fairway Full of MinersKill Rock Stars, 4/5Boats’ latest is far and away their best. They’re still anacquired taste: Mat Klachefsky’s nerdy voice defines thesound, and there’s little room for compromise. But there’sgreat counterbalance at work. His bandmates have greaterpresence here than on previous albums, rarely leaving himto fend for himself.A Fairway Full of Miners suffers in the way most modernalbums do: by being about 15 minutes too long. There are afew throwaway tracks here – “Animated GIFs” in particular –whose exclusion could have emphasized the more economicalsongwriting Boats have all but mastered. That aside, it’s apretty fantastic record.

TRAVELFROMMEET THETRAVELLERSOF THE YEARTUESDAY NIGHT12.02.2013 P. 12By GEORGE W. STONEThese passionate nomads inspire us all totake on the world. Travellers of the Year is ourinaugural celebration of amazing individuals whoexplore the world with passion and purpose. Wesifted through hundreds of nominations to pickboundary-breaking, world-shaking people oninnovative missions.DIVING IN ON THE ROAD ALL YOU KNEAD IS LOVELindaYuenPhoto by Susan SeubertTheronHumphreyPhoto by Susan SeubertNadezhdaSavovaPhoto by Catherine KarnowWith an open spirit and an emptynest, Linda Yuen plunges intotravel:“When I was in high school in Lipue, Hawaii,my dream was to sail around the Pacific,” saysYuen from her home in Honolulu. But in theearly 1940s, with a world at war and a fatherwho hailed from Hiroshima, a holiday cruiseto Tahiti was not an option. So Yuen went tocollege, married a marine biologist and raiseda family. But as Yuen approached 60, her curiosityabout terra incognita became a passion forseeing the world. She became a part-time travel planner, helping others fill their passports and gainingaccess to discounted trips. Then Yuen packedher suitcase. She cruised to Pacific ports. Sheexplored the Galapagos. She toured Australiaand snorkelled the Great Barrier Reef. Shehiked the Milford Track in New Zealand. Shetook a New Year’s Eve cruise to Antarctica. She trekked around the safari lands ofAfrica and ambled across the cold coasts ofNova Scotia. She visited Machu Picchu. She followedthe Silk Route across China twice. Andshe fell in love with Bhutan.“Discovering antiquity and imagining thepeople who have lived in places around theworld is what keeps me travelling,” says the85-year-old.Theron Humphrey documents the oralhistories of everyday Americans:The numbers alone are astonishing –365 days and some 106,000 kilometres loggedon the road, 90,000 photos snapped, 50 U.S.states visited. And the cause is inspiring.Humphrey took a year to see Americaand record the story of one person in filmand audio each day. This storyteller’s monumentalroad trip echoes the Depression-eraFederal Writers Project, an initiative thatrecorded the life stories of some 10,000people.But Humphrey’s oral history enterpriseis rooted in a more personal motive: “I gotstirred up and wanted to live a different life. Iwanted to discover new things and meet newpeople,” says 29-year-old Humphrey, who quithis job as a fashion studio photographer andhit the highway in August 2011 with a missionof befriending one person each day, every day,for a year, and documenting that person’s lifestory. The result is a personal journey publishedonline at thiswildidea.com, a site supportedby $15,000 (U.S.) collected from 142 angelinvestors on the fund-raising platformKickstarter. Like a beat poet for the socialmedia era, Humphrey maps out his route andshares the tales of the people he’s met alongthe way.Travelling grad student NadezhdaSavova bakes up cross-culturalconnections:When 29-year-old Savova inherited her greatgrandmother’scrumbling house in Gabrovo,Bulgaria, the budding anthropologist turneda burden into an opportunity. She organizeda team of local volunteers and rebuilt thestructure into the community-owned BreadHouse Cultural Center, where neighbourscould come to bake loaves, share stories andform friendships. The project was such a success that theperipatetic Princeton student (she’s travelledto 76 countries) has since established similarprograms in a dozen countries.“In my travels, I’ve always been drawn tobakeries … I realized that learning to bakecould be a way to engage people and creativelyconnect locals. Making bread is extremelylow-cost and merely takes time, creating theperfect opportunity to talk, listen and learn.By breaking bread with people of all walks oflife, even feuding groups could come together.”The Bread Houses Network has evolvedinto a community-development model thatdoes not require dedicated space – any school, church, bakery or home with an oven canserve as a venue for encouraging interreligiousdialogue and co-operation among differentgenerations and ethnic groups.National Geographic Traveler

HEALTHGYM ETIQUETTEBy GREG HETHERINGTONIt can be intimidating for new members toexperience rush hour at the gym. Wanderingaround without a workout plan can be astedious as finding a parking spot at Yorkdale. But even with a plan, problems can arisedueto people who don’t follow proper gymetiquette. If equipment you want to use issweaty, missing parts or out of service, youhave to scramble for a substitute. Here are somebasic etiquette fundamentals:WIPE DOWN EQUIPMENT AFTER USEMost people are good with this, but there arestill a lot of people who aren’t. You don’t want toask somone to wipe up their sweat, so the morepeople who follow this, the cleaner your gymwill be.www.sxc.huUSE A TOWELTowels do more than just wipe up sweat. Youcan use them for deliquants who leave theirsweaty DNA on a bench, and it can also be usedto indicate that equipment is in use.HAVE A GLANCEBefore jumping on equipment, quickly scan tosee if anyone else is using it. Generally, they’llbe guarding their territory, so you’ll know it’sfree or not by the person eyeballing you.ASK TO WORK INJust because something is being used doesn’tmean you can’t also use it if you ask politely. Inall my years training, no one has ever refused. You may hear back, “Sure, I’m resting nowanyway” or “I’m on my last set,” but most of thetime you won’t have to wait very long.OFFER A SPOTThis may be more for the heavy-lifters, but ifthere isn’t any more equipment for what youwant to do, walk up to someone as they finishtheir set and offer to spot their next lift. Thiswill allow you to work in with them, and they’llmost likely offer to spot you too.WATCH WHERE YOU WALKGetting inside someone’s personal space, evenif you don’t hit them, can be very distracting.Walk behind someone if they’re using a mirror. If there’s no room behind them, quickly walk infront of them while ththey’re in the “relaxed”phase of their exercise.TUESDAY NIGHT12.02.2013 P. 13DON’T BE A HOGIt’s okay to do lots of sets on a specific piece ofequipment, but it’s not okay to monopolize theequipment by occupying it while you rest. If yousee someone waiting, offer to let them work in.You could say, “You can work in with me; I’m justresting right now.” But leave your towel nextto the machine and keep it in sight if you walkaway, just in case a poacher with no etiquette ison the prowl.PUT YOUR EQUIPMENT AWAYEver have a roommate who never cleaned upthe kitchen after cooking? You probably don’tenjoy unloading other people’s weights either,so put everything back exactly where it belongs.Everyone at some point has been annoyedbecause they can’t find something where it’ssupposed to be.KEEP QUIET IF YOU CANAnother common issue in gyms is noise.Screaming and dropping weights should onlyhappen if it’s necessary, not because you can. This is really going to be gym specific; if you’rein Venice Beach training at Golds Gym, expectlots of screamers. If you’re at a Good Life inLiberty Village, there’s really no need to be loud.Help make the gym a better place bypracticing these techniques.Greg Hetherington is the founder of trainwithgreg.com.As a McGill Kinesiology graduate, former CFL receiver andpersonal trainer, Greg’s fitness philosophy incorporatesfunctional movements that are firmly rooted in both scienceand skill.CANADA’S LARGEST URBAN POLAR BEAR DIP!IT’S SCARY TO JUMP INTO FREEZING WATER. Starving for truth.I’m closer to where I started. I’m chasing afteryou.Successful as he is, Drake may as well bethe Justin Bieber of hip-hop: It’s not an anti-Canadian thing. No matter how many records hesells, or who he dates or if his kiddie fanbase haslaughable pop taste, there’s no denying that, atthe end of the day, his music is still unbelievablyweak & overexposed. If that makes me a haterthen so be it. For all you anti-old school newbies, keep your Gucci Lame, dance-inflected BlackEyed Peas & talentless auto-tuners .. .Every timesomeone dismisses the rap alumni as “too old”or “grandpas,” the criticism always seems tocome from an ignorant dimwit sadly failing torealize, appreciate & respect just who laid thegroundwork.have a question to all the fine ladies out therelooking for something special: do you find theold-fashion way of a guy approaching a ladymore appropriate, or the anonymous non-verbalonline mode of communications ... your thoughts..... signed ......curious ??To the medical emergency on the 8:10 out ofMilton the morning of Feb 8 … I hope you areok!! “Possible heart attack” was mentioned.Sending good energy your way...The best era for rap was when Tupac and Biggiewere running things. FrankWhiteTo Ima SuitGuy: First of all, the top level on everycar isn’t “half of the train.” Second, people whoare loud and disrespectful on the train only havethemselves to blame. If everyone was respectfulof others, this Quiet Zone wouldn’t exist in thefirst place. People complain for a reason, publictransit is meant to be a pleasant journey frompoint A to point B, not for people to behave loudlylike they’re at a busy intersection and need to raisetheir voices to be heard! Also, if you insist onstanding on the stairs to the train station platforms(to keep warm) keep to the sides so people canget through, if not, I hope you get a ticket fromthe GO police. Nothing like hip hop up until ‘93 ...anything after that has mostly been a tragedy.Chub Rock, Steady B, Eric B & Rakim, Special Ed,3XDope, just to name a few. If only true hip-hoplike that was more appreciated by the recordcompanies. Maybe then they would realize theerror of their ways putting so much effort behind“artists” like Lil Wayne a.k.a. A smile would make my day...-Englishman on the LSE.@confused Maybe you could call that personor write to them, so you could find out whatwent wrong. Writing here brings you no closerto truth, it will only make you more confused. You’ll only collect others’ ideas and experiences, they might not even be close to what happenedreally. I am confused too from my failure toconnect with somebody but I’ve got to respectthat person’s desires. Sometimes all we can dois accept it as is and keep loving this world
