The Kannapolis man said he was “ecstatic” after his ticket matched all five white balls in Saturday’sdrawing. Because the multiplier was three, Ellison initially believed his Power Play ticket was worth $600,000. “I thought I mightbe dreaming,” he recalled as he checked the winning numbers on Sunday morning. When he arrived at lottery headquarters inRaleigh today, he learned that five white ball matches, like the one on his $2 Power Play ticket, are automatically worth $1 million.Ellison purchased his winning ticket, worth $680,000 after taxes, at the Church Street BP in Concord. The former musician plansto use his prize money to buy a house, retire and take care of his family. Ellison is the second seven-figure Powerball winner fromKannapolis. Since the lottery began through June 30 of last year, Cabarrus County players have won more than $47.8 million inprizes. During the same time period, education programs in the county have received more than $30.5 million in lottery funds.Besides the $1 million prize, two other Powerball tickets for Saturday’s drawing are worth large prizes. A $30,000 Power Playticket was sold in Gastonia. In Chatham County, a $10,000 ticket was sold in Pittsboro. In Saturday’s drawing, 27,468 playerswon prizes of $3 to $1 million for a total payout of $1,247,694. Because no ticket matched all six numbers, the jackpot forWednesday’s drawing is estimated at $48 million if taken as an annuity, or $25 million if the lump sum option is chosen. The Mega Millions jackpot rolled over the weekend as well. In Friday’s drawing, 7,871 players won prizes of $2 to $450 for a totalpayout of $49,139. Players could win an estimated $24 million jackpot in Tuesday’s drawing if taken as an annuity, or $15.4million if the lump sum option is chosen. The North Carolina Education Lottery has paid out more than $6.4 million in instant scratch-off ticket prizes since Thursday, July7. Carolina Pick 3 players have won more than $1.9 million. Carolina Pick 4 players have won more than $655,000 including 21tickets that won the top prize of $5,000.
