Understanding Customer’s Own Material (COM)The Customer’s Own Material (COM) programallows customers to select textiles thatare not offered through the standard SurfaceMaterials program for use on Turnstoneproducts.The COM process consists of seven steps:COM Web Site, Testing/Approval, Steelcaseto Purchase Service, Pricing, CuttingDirection, Yardage Requirements, and thePurchase Orders.COM Web Site• COM Web site features application testresults for all COM, Designtex Graded-In,Options Collection and Classics Collectionfabrics. The Web site allows you to calculateyardage requirements for mostTurnstone seating and systems products.• Access the COM Web site at: www.steelcase.com:—Click on “tools and insights”—Click on “Customer’s Own Material”or call 1.888.783.3522(1.888.STEELCASE)Application Testing/Approval• Confirm that the selected COM has beentested and approved for application on aspecific product by checking the COMWeb site at: www.steelcase.com.COM Application Testing or “approvedfor application” means the COM fabric hasbeen reviewed for manufacturability usingthe standard manufacturing techniques toachieve acceptable appearance perSteelcase quality standards.COM fabric performance, includingdurability, pilling, color fastness, stretch,splitting, fraying, etc. is not tested bySteelcase. Therefore, COM’s are not coveredby the Steelcase Warranty. Each COMsupplier is responsible for all warrantyclaims related to fabric performance.Steelcase reserves the right to rejector reverse any COM approval that does notmeet the manufacturing requirements inactual production. COM approval may berejected or reversed because not all applicationtesting is based on actual productionconditions and because some materials varyin fabrication.• If the COM is approved, you may continuethe order process.• If the COM has failed, you must reselect afabric.• If the COM is not listed, that meansSteelcase has not tested that fabric on ourproducts.Helpful hint: Seating vinyl and leather donot require testing. Customer’s own leatheris available on Let’s B and Jenny Loungeseating. Customer’s own vinyl is availableon all seating products that acceptSteelcase standard vinyl.• If your material has not been tested, thensend yardage (4.5 yards for seating, 2yards for vertical surfaces) and submita completed COM Application TestingRequest form to:Steelcase Inc.Attn: COM TestingDoor 3054060 Eastern AvenueGrand Rapids, MI 49508• To ensure rapid processing, please usethe electronic COM Application TestingRequest form found on the COM Website under the “How To Test” tab or faxa copy of the COM Testing Request formfrom the Surface Materials ReferenceManual to 616.698.4700. All informationon the form is required inorder to complete testing. COMtests cannot be performed if informationis incomplete. Contactyour requested fabric vendor forany missing information.• Test results will be returned (by fax or e-mail) in four working days from receipt offabric and completed form.COM materials that are approved for applicationto panel systems might require ULapproval after application test approval. ULapproval does involve fees and extendedlead times.All vertical surface COMs tested andapproved with a content of 100% polyestermeet a minimum of class C/UL1286. If classA or B fire rating is indicated, a burn testmust be performed. All vertical surfaceCOMs with a blended fabric constructionrequire a UL burn test. With some COMs they may showsoft comfort wrinkles upon use.Steelcase To Purchase ServiceThe COM program also includes a serviceto purchase approved COM for our customersfor use on Turnstone products.Steelcase will facilitate the ordering, schedulingand shipment of COM directly from thesuppliers. There are no additional chargesfor this service.Steelcase is the only party thatmay purchase COM for allTurnstone products.In some instances, not all colors in a fabricfamily are approved. You will be informed ofthese instances before Steelcase purchasesthe fabric.If for some reason the fabric must beordered directly from the supplier, contactyour Steelcase Service Representative forapproval and instructions prior to purchase.The only time the customer can purchasefabric is for testing.COM Pricing• Confirm COM is tested and approved.• Use the COM or COL (Customer’s OwnLeather) price group found under SurfaceMaterials Options within each product specguide.• Calculate yardage required by using theCOM Calculator found on the COM Website at www.steelcase.com—Click on “Tools and Insights”—Click on “Customer’s Own Material” orcall 1.888.783.3522(1.888.STEELCASE)Helpful tip: Fabric width, repeat and productquantity and style number are requiredin order to calculate yardage accurately.• Add the cost of the fabric to the COM orCOL price group.• The cost of the COM will be shown as aseparate line on the acknowledgement.COM suppliers require fabric purchases inhalf or full yard increments. Therefore,Steelcase will round all final yardage calculationsto the half yard.COL (Customer’s Own Leather) is calculatedby the square foot, but purchased inhide.
