This permits the assistant to pre-load and lock the bracketin place. Before bonding, the clinician may disengage the lock and still adequately maintain a securegrip on the bracket. After bonding the bracket, the Dr. merely relaxes his/her grip for a smooth release, thereby eliminating disruption caused by disengaging common forceps and the need to rebond.4 LaschalSurgical,Inc. www.laschaldental.com

Laschal Surgical, inc. Surgical and Restorative Instruments MaintenancePRESSURE~CONTROLLED FORCEPS: ADJUSTMENT & RECONDITIONINGIf Laschal Pressure-controlled Forceps ever splay or fail to grip consistently, follow these simple steps:1. Disengage the male-female springs in the rear by gently rotating them in opposite directions. The male end may then be removed from thefemale end (Fig. 1).2. With the tips spread far apart for access, use finger pressure to bend tips back into shape (Fig. 2). If splayed, use finger pressure to realigntips laterally (Fig. 3). Greater bending force can be applied to shorter forceps by pressing their tips against the surface of a tabletop.3. Re-engage male-female springs and close forceps to check for proper alignment and grip pressure. If tips are still misaligned, repeat steps1 and 2.4. To close Auto-lock Position: Use finger pressure to gently open (straighten) the bend in both handles as shown (Fig. 4). Due to the natureof the spring steel construction, this may be done with absolute confidence that there will never be any metal fatigue or weakening of theinstrument.5. To Open Auto-lock Position: Use finger pressure to gently close the bend in both handles.Fig. 1: Disengage the malefemalesprings in the rearby gently rotating them inopposite directions.Fig. 2: With the tips spreadfar apart for access, bend tips back intoshape.Fig. 3: If splayed, use fingerpressure to realign tipslaterally. Re-engagesprings and check forproper operation.Fig. 4: To close auto-lockadjustment, use fingerpressure to gentlyincrease (straighten) thebend in both handles.MICROPOINT SCISSORS ADJUSTMENT & RECONDITIONING:If MicroPoint Scissors fail to cut consistently throughout their blade length follow these simple steps:1. Hold scissors firmly in your dominant hand as shown (Fig. 1). Exercise extreme caution in handling the blades. Do not place fingers on thepoints or sharp areas of the blades. With the thumb and index finger of your non-dominant hand, gently but firmly bend the blades towards oneanother, enough so that the blades cross over one another in an arc. Since the blades are made of spring stainless steel, they may be bentrepeatedly with absolute confidence that there will be no weakening or fatiguing of the instrument. Before bending shorter blades, it may be necessary to disengage the rear male-female springs by gently rotating them in opposite directions. The male spring may then be removed from the female spring (Fig. 3). Greater bending force can then be applied to shorter blades by pressingtheir tips against the surface of a tabletop. The handles of Uniband styles may be expanded to open before bending blades.2. After bending the blades and re-engaging the spring (if necessary), close the scissors twice in rapid succession with fingers positioned asshown (Fig. 2). The blades will automatically reset themselves to their original, functional position. If scissors fail to cut consistently afterperforming steps 1 and 2, try this procedure once again before proceeding to step 3.3. To sharpen, disengage the male-female springs in the rear. The male end may then be removed from the female end (Fig. 3).4. With the blades spread far apart for access, use an appropriate flat sharpening stone to sharpen the blades. Note the proper method ofsharpening: With moderate pressure, place the flat of the stone along the bevel of each blade, one at a time, and move the stone towards thecutting surface (Fig. 4). This will sharpen the blade and create a microscopic burr along the cutting surfaces, which will enhance cuttingefficiency.5. Re-engage the male-female spring and repeat steps 1 and 2. The microscopic burr raised on the cutting surfaces (during step 4) willdisappear leaving a razor like edge.Fig.1: Bend the blades gently but Fig. 2: Close the scissors twicefirmly towards one another, in rapid succession.enough so that the bladescross over one another ina gentle arc.Fig. 3: If scissors fail to cut Fig. 4: With the blades spreadconsistently after twice far apart for access, useperforming steps 1 and 2, an appropriate flatdisengage the male-female sharpening stone tosprings in the rear by sharpen the blades.gently rotating them inopposite directions.Fig. 5: Re-engage male-femalespring and repeat steps1 and 2.
