Course information<br />

The speakers and demonstrators all have extensive experience of teaching electron microscopy and are drawn from the RMS<br />

membership and from the University of Leeds.<br />

There are three streams to the course:<br />

1) Biological EM (SEM and TEM)<br />

2) General SEM and TEM for Physical Scientists<br />

3) Advanced TEM<br />

Summary of Topics covered<br />

B<strong>as</strong>ic principles of imaging and diffraction; b<strong>as</strong>ic principles of electron beam interactions and electron microscopy; Radiation damage;<br />

Instrument maintenance; Sample preparation and Processing (Biological/Materials); SEM, TEM, STEM imaging; environmental SEM;<br />

CryoSEM; EBSD; Immunolabelling; CryoTEM; EDX; EELS and EFTEM; Tomography; Image Recording and Processing.<br />

There are plenty of practical demonstrations in addition to lectures.<br />

Information for Prospective Delegates<br />

About the course<br />

The course is conducted in English and all course materials are prepared in English.<br />

The course will have a maximum of 24 delegates and you can select to attend the SEM & TEM, Biological SEM & TEM or the Advanced<br />

TEM stream of the Course. There is flexibility within the course to attend parts from each strand.<br />

Venue and Travel<br />

The course will be taking place in the Houldsworth Building, Department of Engineering Materials, at the University of Leeds, Clarendon<br />

Road, Leeds.

If you are flying to the UK, we recommend that you travel to Manchester International airport and then travel by train, it is more<br />

covenient that Leeds airport.<br />

If travelling by train, it is e<strong>as</strong>iest to get a taxi directly to campus, this should cost no more than £10.<br />

Registration, Accommodation and Meals<br />

Registration take place on Monday 8th July from 08.30 – 09.00 at the Houldsworth main entrance.<br />

At registration you will receive the following:<br />

a name badge, a course pack including programme, a CD of course notes, a delegate list, and a pack of RMS information.<br />

You will be requested to wear your badge at all times during the course.<br />

Accommodation<br />

The accommodaion package is yet to be finalised and further information will appear here soon.<br />

Meals<br />

Further information on breakf<strong>as</strong>t will be added here once the accommodation location is set. Lunches, te<strong>as</strong> and coffees will be provided in<br />

the Houldsworth Building.<br />

Evening meals<br />

Mondayevening: Dinner at Akbars Indian Restaurant in Leeds.<br />

Tuesdayevening: Free Evening, you will need to make your own arrangements for dinner.<br />

Wednesdayevening: Free Evening, you will need to make your own arrangements for dinner. Optional tour of Leeds, conducted by<br />

course organiser Rik Brydson.<br />

Thursdayevening: C<strong>as</strong>a Mia Millennium, Italian restaurant in Leeds.<br />

Additional Information<br />

● Delegates travelling from overse<strong>as</strong> will need electricty travel adaptors for the UK.<br />

Internet access p<strong>as</strong>swords can be obtained at registration and are free. You can use them anywhere on Leeds campus, wifi is<br />

available in the department.<br />

● Dress code for the course is smart c<strong>as</strong>ual, you will be indoor for the duration of the course and the building is air conditioned. There<br />

are evening social activities planned and delegates are reminded to bring comfortable shoes for the tour of Leeds city centre and<br />

provision in c<strong>as</strong>e of inclement weather.<br />

● Every care will be taken to cater for any special dietary requirements. Delegates must make the RMS aware of these requirements<br />

prior to attending, ple<strong>as</strong>e contact victoria@rms.org.uk.<br />

● There is a small local shop opposite the department.<br />

After the course<br />

We will send out an email questionnaire after the course. We would be most grateful if you could fill this in within a week of returning so<br />

that we can use your comments to improve the running of the course for the following year.<br />
