PRESIDENT’S columnHello to all members,It’s been an interestingcouple of months, where I haveattended NZCTA AssociationProvincial and Island shoots atWaikato, Wanganui, Hawke'sBay Central, and Southland andof course the National SkeetChampionships just concludedat Waikato National grounds. These visits have given methe opportunity to view thedevelopments of our ProvincialGrounds, in moving the sportforward, and also the condition of the skeet shutes andsafety shields, of which we had recently requested confirmation fromclubs that these very important safety issues had been completed andwere in place. One thing I have noticed in this electronic age we find ourselvesheading into is to ensure in down the line events the voice releaseequipment is all the same on each field, instead of some on delay andsome on instant release. This is annoying to competitors trying for aNorth South score in a points score event where the voice release hascost them a point or two.New ISSF Rules have recently been released for Trap, Skeet, and Double Trap events. And although I do not wish to advise thechanges in this column, very exciting developments will encouragegreater participation and enjoyment in ISSF events from this pointforward, especially in Double Trap. I would encourage all membersto take an active interest in our Association website as to the rulechanges in place. The Executive has decided that NZCTA events willbe conducted under the new rules from 2013. Upgraded computersoftware is being investigated as we speak.Currently the North Island Executive is one member down with theresignation of David Da Silva due to personal circumstances. I wouldpersonally like to thank David for his contribution to date and wishhim well in his career from this point forward. Maybe we will see himagain at some future date representing the NZCTA on the Executive, where we will all benefit from his years of experience in the DTL andSkeet disciplines. This of course means we have a positive vacancy onthe NI Executive, and all applications for Executive positions need tobe considered by clubs for voting. I would like to ask all clubs fromboth North and South Islands to take a positive proactive approachto voting for the people that you wish to represent you. EveryNational Executive member represents the whole country, not justthe Island of registration. The old days of having a North and SouthIsland Council completely separated are well gone; however eachIsland Vice President is responsible for presiding over activities andrepresentation within his or her own Island. The National President isresponsible for presiding over both Islands obviously.Qualifying for the NZ Teams at the Waikato 2014 World DTLChampionship has commenced at the Hawke's Bay Provincials, andwill end at the 2013 South Island Championship. Qualifying criteriafor the World DTL event can be viewed in another article within thisissue of Gunshot and on the NZCTA website, where all qualifyingscores will be recorded for every individual separately. We will field3 open, 3 Ladies, 3 Juniors, and 3 Veteran Teams plus reserves in allteams (4 open reserves plus 2 in each category ).This is a wonderfulopportunity for members to enter this event either as individuals, oras part of a team within your own country, so get out there and startpractising.Waikato Clay Target Club is well on the way with upgradingthe facilities for the World event with additional trap fields alreadyinstalled. The Waikato President states additions to the currentclub-house facilities will commence following the 2013 National DTLChampionships. The NZ Skeet teams to represent NZ in the Glenn Trophy, to becompeted at the 2013 National Skeet Championships at Canterbury, and the World skeet Championships in America in 2013 wereannounced at the 2012 National Skeet Championships. I am sure allmembers give a hearty congratulations to all selected team membersand wish them well in their future performance. A reminder is givenat this point, that all selected team members to represent NZ must beNZ citizens when the team is selected and announced. On behalf of the NZCTA Executive, we wish all members and theirfamilies a joyous Christmas and a happy holiday period with yourfamilies.Your President, Keith Livingstone ■NOTES FROM THEEXECUTIVE OFFICERPOSTAL SHOOTSClubs are reminded that the results for the Allan Brown(Double Rise) HC Walker (Skeet) and the Hawke's BayShield (Points Score) postal events must be submitted to theNational Office no later than the end of January.HANDICAP BOOKS/STICKERS FOR 2013Shooters are reminded that the 2013 stickers for handicapbooks are sent to clubs. This is the opportunity for clubs tocollect subscriptions and issue shoot calendars to members.2013 DTL NATIONALSShooters aspiring to get into the Mackintosh team arereminded to bring their No 1 uniform (black trousers, blackshoes, white shirt, NZCTA tie and black blaser)NEXT ISSUE CLOSE OFF DATECopy for the next issue (March/April) will close off on 1stFebruary. No late copy will be accepted. All clubs hostingOpen Shoots and Association Championships must advertisethese in Gunshot, along with an entry fee for the event.MERRY CHRISTMASI wish all club administrators a very merry festive seasonand thank those who have helped run our sport over the lastyear. The many volunteers who ensure the clubs continueto function are greatly appreciated by all who attend. I hopeyou have an enjoyable festive season with those who areimportant to you and a safe and happy New Year.gunshot7

NZ SKEETWAIKATO CLAY TARGET CLUB19 – 24 NOVEMBER 2012NZ Skeet High Guns (L-R) Andrew Caldwell-Smith C Grade, Sam Gawn B Grade, Matt Fallon AA Grade, Peter Lassen A GradeBy Adrienne SearsWaikato Clay Target Club, Monday 19 November 2012, the first dayof the 2012 NZ Skeet Championship week. The field of shootershad come from a weekend of skeet shooting at Thames and werekeen to continue in their chosen sport and improve their scores. The weather had improved and Monday was fine with a cool wind. There were 48 shooters including 11 from Australia that shot the100 targets of the trophy match. Nigel Hughes from Australia tookthe HOA with 99 after a shoot off with Kelvin Gutsell from Mataura.Barry Williamson from Auckland Met won A Grade outright on 93.Tuesday was a clear, sunny day with the 28 gauge and .410 shot. There is a growing interest in these sub gauge disciplines withsome shooters spending up to $15,000 on special barrels. Therewas a bit of juggling to get enough .410 ammo but everyone ralliedto the cause and the match went ahead. One of the instigators ofthe sub gauge events, Brian Thomson, won the .410 Trophy eventwith the only possible. Kelvin Gutsell won A grade on 48 withMalcolm Briggs from Australia 2nd. Sam Gawn from Waihora won1st B grade on 42. Nigel Hughes won the 28g trophy event with apossible after a shoot off with Glenn Walker (1st A) and LindsayRodgers (2nd). Jack Whale from Hawke's Bay was 1st B grade on 47.The Waikato Club and Reloaders Supplies sponsored the trophieswhich were gratefully received by the winners.Wednesday was the first of the NZ Championships with the20 gauge Championship. Gunn Estate has continued theirsponsorship of the NZ Championships and their presence at thisevent is most welcome and certainly adds a superb flavour to thetournament (excuse the pun). Gunn Estate wines have been asponsor of the NZCTA for many years now and their wines havegrown in popularity and many clubs are stocking this wine intheir bars and shooters are asking for it by name. Thank you toGunn Estate wines for this sponsorship which the NZCTA andshooters appreciate and value. The Gunns have worked the landin Hawke’s Bay for generations. Back in 1920 George Gunn movedfrom Central Otago and purchased land in the Bay, still owned bythe family today. Winemaker, Denis Gunn, cut his teeth on thefamily estate vineyards. He went on to become a highly respectedwinemaker and for him it was always about crafting the best ofthe wine classics, time and time again- nothing over the top, justquality wines that are great to drink. Gunn Estate range offersSauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and MerlotCabernet so there is something there for everyone. There were 70shooters who shot this event including 9 Australians in excellentconditions. It was Kopuku shooter Michael Hirtzel who shot theonly 99 who took the Gunn Estate, the Silver Fern, the sash andthe HOA Trophy. Following behind after a shoot off, all on 98 wereTony Truss 1st, Matt Fallon 2nd and Kelvin Gutsell 3rd. Ross Royfrom Dunedin shot 98 and took 1st A grade and Brian Webber fromWaitemata on 96 won 1st B grade. Jim Anderton from Kopukushot 83 to win 1st C Grade. Lorraine Hughes from Australia wonthe Ladies title on 96. Lorraine was the defending winner. MervPratt who has been working hard around the club won the SuperVeterans with 96.Kilwell Sports are a major sponsor of clay target shooting in NZand they have sponsored the Kilwell Skeet Trophy shoot event atthis championship for a very long time. The array of prizes theysupplied this year was most impressive and certainly spurred theshooters on to achieve. Thank you Geoff Wells and Kilwell Sportsfor this continued sponsorship which is very much appreciated. There were 105 shooters who shot this event. After a shoot offthat went 55 targets, Andy Peter from Marlborough took the HOAprize. There were 6 shooters who shot 99 including 2 from A grade,gunshot9

There were 3 shooters who shot a credible98 and Laurie Chelepy took out this trophy on the day. The othercategories were won outright without shoot offs required. AlyshaBell from Timaru won Juniors, Lorraine Hughes won Ladies andMurray Cameron won Super Veterans. The Webber Ellis Northvs South Open and Veterans teams were shot at the end of thetrophy shoot to enable those shooters who wanted to go to JohnThompson’s funeral the next day in Te Puke. Both the North teamsin the Open and Veteran showed that they were the strongerteams this time. The Open team (Colin Heard, Dean Everett,Graham Geater, Tony Truss, Jamie Peryer-Fursdon) shot 121 withthe South team shooting 113. The North Veterans team (MurrayCameron, John Tonkin, Merv Pratt) shot 73 with the South teamshooting 71. Out of the Open team the Glenn Trophy for 2013 wasfinalised. This team will compete at the NZ Skeet championshipsagainst Australia next year. The team is Dean Everett, Tony Truss,Jamie Peryer-Fursdon, Kelvin Gutsell, Colin Heard. The NZ Skeet Championship was also thefinal qualifying event for the NZ Skeet teamto compete in the World Championships inSan Antonio, Texas next year as part of anofficial NZ team. The team members are:Colin Heard, Dean Everett, Graham Geater,Jamie Peryer-Fursdon and Kelvin Gutsell. The reserves are Steven Cooper and TonyTruss. Congratulations to these shooterswho have qualified for this team and wewish them well in America.Friday was another glorious Waikato day.The NZ Skeet Handicap Championshipwas on today. After the handicaps wereestablished the 111 shooters got going. From this field 66 qualified for the shootoff which started at 2pm. Gradually theshooters fell out and after six roundsAndy Peter, who thought he had startedthe match and shoot off with two targetshad just kept hitting them all. Ewen Piriedropped out taking 2nd place giving AndyPeter the HOA title, the coveted GunnEstate wine, the Silver Fern and sash. KelvinGutsell was 3rd, Barry Wheildon was 4thMike Sime 5th and John Waldon 6th. Thecategories were all sorted during the shootoffs. Donna Matthews won the Ladies andnew shooter from Waikato Kent Nichollwon the Juniors. Kent has only startedshooting so he has a bright shooting futureahead of him. There were 2150 targets shotin the shoot off. Ross Roy, who turned 60the previous day, was delighted to hear hewas regraded into AA but I hear he hadspent considerable time trying to cleanmarks from his barrels and when he askedfor help was told they were ported barrels. The Ellis Webber North vs South Juniorteam was shot today and again it was theNorth Island team (Connor Hourigan,Mason Reed, Huntar Leslie) who were the stronger team shooting71. The South team shot 66. Unfortunately the South Island wasunable to field a Ladies team this year so there was no competition.George Ellis and Graeme Webber have sponsored this event sinceits inception and expansion to include the categories and thisyear Graeme Webber was present for most of the competition. The NZCTA is very grateful for their foresight to foster this eventto encourage this discipline and we hope their involvement willcontinue for many years to come.Shooting started early, before 9am, in order to get all the shootersthrough the 100 targets for the NZ Skeet Championship. Thenumbers shooting increased to 126, up from 122 two years ago and109 last year. With the total number that the club can handle being130 there was a worry that we would have to turn shooters awaybut thankfully this didn’t eventuate this year. Stager Sport Ltd andCleanburn Energy Systems generously sponsored a 20g Huglu103DE U/O Shotgun for today’s HOA. Stager Sport Ltd sponsorsthe DTL Nationals and this is their first time sponsoring the SkeetNationals and we hope this is a relationship that will continue.Shooters are reminded to consider the NZCTA sponsors whosupport our sport when making their purchases. It was a long day10 gunshot

with the event shoot off finishing just after 7pm, and then therewere the World Skeet team places and reserves to establish plusthe teams for the Australian NZ Skeet Postal Challenge. This isalways a bit of a challenge with shooters qualifying for more thanone team and we were going to shoot this event the following dayso we had to make sure team members were going to be present. There were 5 shooters who shot the possible in the NZ SkeetChampionship including Merv Pratt who took out 1st A gradeand Super Veteran with this score. The shoot off for HOA went 43targets when young Jamie Peryer-Fursdon took the HOA title. Thiswas a very popular win and at presentation time he was delightedto take possession of the Huglu Shotgun and the Gunn EstateWine plus the Silver Fern, sash and trophy. Juniors and Ladieswere both won on 98’s by Mason Reed and Lorraine Hughesrespectively. Peter Lassen from Waihora shot 99 to give him 2ndplace A grade clear but the 3rd place had 4 shooters on 98 so theyhad to shoot off to establish this placing which Jeff Munro took.Young Whangarei shooter Andrew Caldwell-Smith won C gradeclear on 94 but 2nd and 3rd placings had to shoot off with BenteHenry taking 2nd and young Kent Nicholl continuing his excellentrun taking 3rd place.Sunday got off to a great start with the Australian NZ SkeetPostal Challenge teams event roll call at 8.30 and everyone waspresent so shooting got started promptly at 9am. The conditionswere excellent again, as it has been for the entire week. Teamphotos followed then it was straight into the NZ Skeet DoublesChampionship. There were 87 shooters to shoot this event whichincluded 28 AA, 32 A, 15 B and 12 C grade shooters. Last year atChristchurch there were 94 entries and 2 years ago there were78. By this time I think the Australians were starting to feel theyhad better make their move on the High Guns as Malcolm Briggsand Matt Fallon tied on 97 but Malcolm won the shoot off after 20targets. Nigel Hughes continued his fine shooting to take 2nd placeon 96 and Glenn Walker had to shoot off with fellow AustralianLaurie Chelepy for 3rd place, both on 95. Glenn won the shoot offto take 3rd place. Peter Lassen took A grade 1st place clear on 95but club mates Hamish Wilson and Peter Boyd had to shoot off toestablish the places. Waihora is obviously a breeding ground forskeet shooters as Sam Gawn won 1st B grade clear on 93.The High Gun saw Nigel Hughes from Australia come up quietlyand tie with Matt Fallon on 246. This shoot off went 28 targets tosee Nigel win the High Gun title, the coveted Gunn Estate wine, the Silver Fern and the glory of this win. Peter Lassen was A GradeHigh Gun winner and Sam Gawn was B grade winner, and C gradewent to Andrew Caldwell-Smith. The Ladies category High Gunwinner was won by Lorraine Hughes (wife of Nigel) and MasonReed from Whangarei won the Juniors. Laurie Chelepy fromAustralia won the Veterans and Waikato Super Veteran Merv Pratttook out this title. After the presentations were over it was time to say the thank yousand good byes for another year. Dean Everett and his team certainlyput their heart and soul into running this event. The groundslooked magnificent and the event ran well. On behalf of theNZCTA thank you to all the workers who made this an enjoyableweek. DTLSouth Island ChampsSouthland Clay Target ClubThe expression “from North Cape tothe Bluff” is often bandied about but wecould certainly have used it to describethe attendance at the South Island DTLChampionships this year. A hundred andtwenty names were on the score boardrepresenting some thirty five clubs. Wewere delighted that so many people hadtaken the trip south and were happy towelcome so many from the North Island.Delighted as we were to see the northerntravellers we were very equally as pleasedto host our regular visitors, those fromThe West Coast, Canterbury, Otago and ofcourse our local Southland shooters. The scene had been set for an interestingtournament. Our club had been fortunateto receive a substantial grant from theInvercargill Licensing Trust. This enabledus to carry out some very necessarymaintenance in the form of new trap lids, height pegs and skeet chutes. The groundshad their usual four yearly spruce up andthe buildings had a new coat of paint. Thishas taken considerable time and effort bya core of our members and their obviousinput is there for all to see.The nature of our sport means we oftenhave to pray to the weather gods andwhile the days were not exactly summerconditions we managed to complete thethree days in reasonable conditions whichis always a plus.Friday was the chosen day for the Ball Trapand our Trophy match. A large field ofeighty six competitors competed, a betternumber than we had anticipated. ColinWaghorn, Gorge Road, recently returnedfrom Canada, won the Ball Trap outrightwith the only possible. Local man CliffMunro battled with Alistair Crosbie fromPuketiro for honours in B Grade and BruceBest a new recruit to shooting, took CGrade. We had secured sponsorship from threelocal businesses, Shooters World Gore,RD1 Invercargill and Radcliffe Electricalfor the Trophy match. Neil Pratt from TeKuiti started the weekend on a high note totake the honours closely followed by BrianHartley Bay of Plenty and Damian BriggsBarrytown. B and C Grade were as keenlyfought with Mike Burdon from Balfour andStuart McKerchar Roxburgh taking theirgrades. The Saturday started as is usual on ourgrounds with the Skeet competition. KelvinGutsell continued his winning way in thisdiscipline taking the HOA after a shoot offwith Robert Prince Hutt Valley and ColinWaghorn. Russell Kelly, a good Nightcapsman, was delighted to claim B Grade andAllan Diack another from the NightcapsClub was the C Grade claimant. The 2 Man Skeet team winners also had tobe decided with a shoot off and it was theNorth Islanders doing battle. The pairingof Peter Borrie and Robert Prince was toogood for Brian Hartley and Martin van deWetering and the 5 Man team was wonoutright by Southland.Double Rise and the tricky little Minis werecontested next. No possibles in the DoubleRise but Grant Nilsson Northern Wairoaand William Rooney Timaru fought forthe HOA with Grant claiming the winner’sbadge. Allan Diack and Bruce Best wavedthe Nightcaps flag in both B and C Grades.Ball Trap HOA C WaghornThe ever consistent Ray Everett Timaruwon a very short lived shoot off to secureHOA Minis and new shooter Mark EalesWest Otago made B Grade his.And so to Single Rise. Thirty one possiblesmeant the prediction that this event wouldnot be decided until Sunday morning cametrue. Six shooters, Phil Harraway Southland,Mike Sime Timaru, Dave Wordley Putaruru,Colin Waghorn Gorge Road, Gavin SearleCanterbury and Robert Prince UpperHutt were on the grounds early on Sundaymorning to decide the blue ribbon event. After two and a bit rounds the placingshad all been determined and Dave Wordleycame out on top. Congratulations Dave, afine effort. The Provincial team Points Score matchcreated much interest and much lightheartedbanter for some who didn’tperform as expected. Six teams competedfor top honours, Southland, Otago,Canterbury, Northland, Bay of Plenty andWaikato with a delighted Southland teamwinning. The programme then continued with theremaining three disciplines and like muchof the weekend the winning positions wereshared between several shooters with noone person dominating the podium. PeterBorrie Wairarapa won the Triples. RayEverett Timaru took the Points and StuartSutherland Southland the Single Barrel. Asin the main events the categories generallywere shared among several competitors, the exception being the Super Veteranswhere John Smith Puketiro and Art DiackNightcaps did battle on a regular basis.Unique to the South Island competitionis the Andy Black Cup, a contest betweenprovinces decided on the aggregate scoresover the weekend. NSSA World SkeetSan Antonio, TexasOn Saturday 22nd September the intrepid travellers of EwenPirie, Dean Everett and Andy Peter met in Auckland prior to flying(eventually) to San Antonio. Eventually as there was a stop in LosAngeles, combined with a delay in departure from LA to San Antonio. The total travel time was approximately 19 hours flying time, with a 4+hour stop in LA making it a long day.We were picked up at just on midnight by Merv Pratt, who had travelledover two weeks earlier with his wife Margaret for a deserved break;plus to pick up some sub gauge carrier barrels he had purchased priorto leaving NZ. Merv had packed Margaret off home earlier in the daymaking the remainder of the trip a boys' only affair.Getting into our accommodation at Staybridge Suites in Colonnadeafter midnight, priorities were set – quick allocation of beds, thentesting of barrel fit. Merv had secured three spots for us to shoot atSan Antonio Gun Club the following morning, however we would bein the first wave; 9 am start!San Antonio Gun Club is one of the original skeet grounds in the USand absolutely beautiful. Spanish Style skeet houses, (see photo)immaculate grounds and friendly people. San Antonio Gun Clubshould not be mistaken for the National Shooting complex. Herewe met up with Matt Fallon and the British skeet shooters on theirannual migration, plus the other Australasian pair of Mal Briggs andKelvin Gutsell; Mal and Kal as they became known. Other familiarAustralians were on site including Paul & Leone Johnston, Nigel &Lorraine Hughes and Glenn & Paulette Walker to mention a few.San Antonio Gun Club run a Pre world 500 target event the weekendprior to Mini World and World shoot which is well supported byinternational travellers, Doubles on Friday, 12g and 28g Saturday andfinally 20g and .410 on Sunday. Targets in the air and being shot at,is the theme of shooting the World Champs; It’s not for the fainthearted. It is Skeet Nirvana.Shooting started at 9am, not a minute earlier due to city ordinance, however as the first shot rang out at 9am, the church bells in thedistance rang out heralding the beginning of a wonderful trip. The cost of shooting in US is similar to what we experience here inNZ; to shoot 200 targets including some of the optional sweeps plusammo of the various gauges cost me USD$196. Sounds a lot whenwritten like this, but when the exchange rate is NZD$1 = USD$0.82it’s better and cheaper than shooting in Australia. Costs for the wholetwo weeks excluding purchases over and above shooting but includingfood, accommodation (shared) and airfares came to approximately$5,600; a lot of money I know but truly the most memorable trip I haveever experienced. Ewen was heard to say that of all the internationalevents he had been to, he never expected that one would get him askeen as this trip did.The NSSA do it well. All entries are completed well prior to departing.A squad pack is posted two weeks prior to Championships starting, showing your squad number, time of starting each day and yourshooter position within the squad. On the first day, you register at theNational Ground paying entries on your credit card but all options (ofwhich there are many) are paid in cash. Then shooting begins. At the National Grounds there are 47 skeet fields, but not all in a row.Fields are spread over the huge site forming the National Shootingcomplex. The main 9 fields including Stadium Field run along the frontof the main pavilion and Vendors Row. 20 more are approximatelyhalf a kilometre in front obscured by trees and bush; further down theThe squad with traps in the background at the National ShootingComplexgently sloping site are 12 fields affectionately known as the dirty dozen, confirmed when the skies opened on Monday of World Doubles withmud aplenty; and finally 6 fields behind the main car park area on a hilloverlooking the whole complex.Vendor row is not for the girls. There are boys' toys of every type;Krieghoff factory service, Du Pont, White Flyer, Remington, Kolar,Great Lakes Shooting Supply, Alamo Shooting Supply, Paxtons,Perazzi and Caesar Guerini to name only some of the suppliers on site. There were ammo bags of every description including ones made outof Elephant, Croc and stingray. Guns galore, of every conceivable price– even one specially made for Hugh Heffner which would be virtuallyunsellable to anyone with any type of morals. Belts and buckles, cleaning products, stocks, barrels, bits and pieces, you name it, it wasthere for you to buy and stuff into overweight baggage. Nirvana. It took us a few days to realise a very key point. Skeet in America is thesame as in New Zealand. The targets aren’t better. The targets don’trun on rails. The referees are normal people.Skeet is the same the world over, targets are buffeted by wind just asthey are at home, there is equally as much space around a target tomiss it as there is at home, and station 7 is missed just as easily in theStates as it is at home, if you don’t pay attention. Once you realise thisyou have a great time, there is nothing left to learn except stamina toshoot 200 targets a day; plus you need to get on with it. You have 10seconds to shoot your target from the time the last person shot. Whenyou shoot 100 targets in a single visit, you shoot 100 targets in a singlevisit. One squad leader advised us to carry 4 extra shells, as once youfinish station 8 he moved directly to station 1 and started shooting, picking up the remaining ammo for the round when passing stationtwo. This level of speed is needed to get through 800 competitorsper day.We saw the great shots in action. Wayne Mays, Todd Bender, RobertPaxton, but we also saw them beaten by ‘normal’ shooters givingus hope that we could achieve a great result. On the last day ofcompetition Matt Fallon came very close to pulling off the ultimate, shooting a perfect 100/100 using .410. His first place A grade didn’tdo justice to the achievement that he accomplished. On the last daythere was a bit of breeze, it was warm and muggy. To shoot 100 targetsperfectly with 14 grams of shot earned Matt a hat shot full of holes as isthe practice in the States. Only 5 shooters achieved the perfect scorein the Championship. ■gunshot 23

hawke's bay PROVINCIALSDouble Rise HOA Robert PrinceBy Nigel Field President HBCTCWelcome to sunny Hawke’s Bay. It is 9am on Saturday17th Nov and all the skeet shooters are standing aroundchewing the fat, looking at the sky, reliving past victoriesand losses but not registering. NZCTA President KeithLivingston and Michael Holmes inspect the targetsthrown for them by shoot manager Graeme Allisterand Trap mechanic Mike Withers. The light is good, thebirds fly beautifully from the new La Porte traps but stillthe skeet shooters hang around not registering. Somebrave souls gingerly attempt to correctly fill out thediabolically complicated registration form with moreboxes than Eden Park and take them to the secretary’soffice. The trickle starts to grow but we need to get asquad on the mark to start the ball rolling. Let’s getsome of the locals shooting. Graeme and Mike can bein the first squad. They are men of action. They don’tneed to wait around until the sun is near its apogeeor that little zephyr of wind settles down so the callgoes out that they are in squad one. Middle aged menmoving quickly to get guns, ammo and onto the markis a thing of rare beauty. Both respond with possibleswhile the registrations build steadily to a mini tsunamiat the office. Eric Dias, Kelvin Ellison and B graderShane Ashforth all post possibles. They line up for theshoot off, everyone trying to be relaxed and friendlybut hiding the fact that they desperately want to beatthe other guys standing next to them. By station two itis all over with Shane Ashforth holding his nerve andclaiming bragging rights over the A graders. In the Cgrade a young local Sandy Campbell who has only beenshooting skeet for 6 months triumphs outright with a 23.Skeet A Grade 1st Eric DaisOn to minis and with eyes like golf balls the shootersapproach these little messengers of doom. Only SaintDylan Woolhouse emerges from this dragon's denwith a possible. Angus Donald, a young Wairarapashooter, slew 13 in a performance well beyond his age, experience, weight and height. How many times has it been said that you have to beable to shoot double rise to win Provincials? They wereall there to be shot but nobody did, Robert Prince takingit out from Graeme Williams on 18.Day one concludes with the Single Rise and 15 possibles.Mike Withers underlined his Mackintosh Teamselection this year by taking the HOA. A few quiet beerswere consumed as shooters, with their guns cleaned, oiled and locked in their cars I may add, analysed theirday's shooting. The forecast for Sunday was not promising but the startof the day was calm and the first few squads were givenan armchair run. By the sixth squad a squall of Biblicalproportions blew in taking with it the hope, dreamsand sweepstakes of some very fine shooters. Logs thesize of railway sleepers were needed just to keep thephonopulls from gracefully sliding from one station tothe next. Some shooters in the clubhouse from the earlysquads were heard to commiserate with the squadsfacing this challenge. There was only a hint of irony intheir voices.Dylan Woolhouse who had nearly convinced himselfthat he had blown his chances on the first day laid downthe challenge with possibles in the Triples and PointsScore. Only Chris Cassin and Stuart Bell could staygunshot 27

As Ray Everett aptly put it, “we’re here havingfun, while everyone else is wishing they were”. The magnificentnew district medals from Tony Truss were keenly sought, whichmade the competition fierce. The 100 target skeet North-Southqualifying match for the impressive Graeme Smith Trophy and$300 for HOA was shot on the Monday, with a few passing showersand hail, and tricky winds. The odd trap problem will be rectifiedwith new Laporte traps arriving in the New Year. the magazines can be unbound and guillotined for automatedscanning. Recent donations of quality back issues from Mr.Alistair Cottle will enable an immediate saving of some $8,000by allowing NZ Micrographic services to cut and automate thescanning of those magazines.Remit 5Hutt Valley Gun ClubThat the NZCTA executive considers the inclusion of 28 gauge and.410 bore skeet events as National Championships. Such events tobe stand alone and not form part of the High Gun until after a trialperiod as determined by the NZCTA executive.Explanation:This is a natural evolution of the skeet shooting in NZ. At the2012 Skeet Nationals, similar numbers shot the 20 gauge event (aNational Championship) as shot the 50 target 28 gauge and .410trophy matches. Proper recognition of the sub gauges will enhancetheir status, and should attract more shooters to the event.Remit 6Hutt Valley Gun ClubThat the Executive consider changing Skeet championship shootoffprocedure at National level to doubles off stations 3, 4 and 5.ExplanationAt some stage, it will be accepted that Skeet Doubles is actuallyan integral component of the Skeet discipline. To use doubles asa shoot-off process would allow the discipline to grow by beingable to accept more shooters at an event. Even during daylightsaving time there is only time available to have 5 flights / wavesof shooters shooting at 100 targets. To use the doubles shoot offprocess would immediately permit a sixth flight / wave of shooterswithout having to increase the number of skeet fields available.Doubles of 3, 4 and 5 is a very effective, entertaining and spectatorfriendly method of determining event winners and is used in mostother English speaking countries in one form or another. (CPSAshoot doubles off station 4 only to determine tie breaks after oneround of 25 targets).Remit 7Mataura Clay Target ClubThat the name of the New Zealand Clay Target Association DTLHall of Fame be substituted with the following:“New Zealand Clay Target Association Hall of Fame”Remit 8Mataura Clay Target ClubIf Remit 4 (above) is carried then:That the Executive of the New Zealand Clay Target Associationconsider and adopt reasonable criteria within the next six monthsfor the admission of former and current NZCTA member shootersin all disciplines of clay target shooting to be considered foradmission to the NZCTA Hall of Fame.Remit 9Mataura Clay Target ClubThat the National 20 Gauge Skeet Championship be included inthe National Skeet High Gun Championship at the National SkeetChampionshipsRemit 10North Canterbury Clay Target AssociationThat all NZCTA events (Provincials, Island and Zone) be shotusing the same grades (AA, A, B C) and classifications (Veterans,Super Veterans, Ladies, Juniors) as the equivalent New ZealandChampionship event.Explanation:This will ensure consistency in shoot conditions for allChampionship matches.Remit 11North Canterbury Clay Target AssociationThat the National Council initiate all legal remits passed by asimple majority at any Annual General Meeting or Special GeneralMeeting, as soon as practical after that meeting.Remit 12Wanganui/Rangitikei Clay Target ClubThat AA Grade be introduced at Provincial DTL Championships.Explanation:Provincial Championships are deemed to be a serious part of theDTL calendar so should be regarded as a build up for the Islandand National Championships. Introducing AA grade at this levelwill allow the various grades the opportunity to compete at theirown level of competency. It would reduce the imbalance that ishappening in A grade and more than likely increase the numberof A graders attending who at present feel they have no chanceagainst AA graders. Surely the extra cost of AA grade is minimalto the satisfaction for a large number of our shooters. No doubt inthe future AA grade will be introduced at all levels.Remit 13Waitemata Clay Target ClubThat North South qualifying be on Points Score and Single Barrelheld on the Sunday in Districts and Provincials.Remit 14Waitemata Clay Target ClubThat no Provincial or District Championship should be run on thesame weekend in the same Island.Remit 15Waitemata Clay Target ClubThat there be Disabled categories at major NZCTA Championships(DTL, Skeet, ISSF)Explanation:There is need for this category to be introduced as to attractdisabled shooters to National Championships. We have categoriesthat started with few participants. Now over the years they havegrown. Why? Because the categories were introduced. Around theWorld, disabled categories are growing in strength. We should notbe left behind and push those with disabilities into other sports.Clay target shooting is a sport for all. ■gunshot 41

100th inyear Anniversary shoot ofDouglas Rose Bowlconjunction with the CF and RW Gunn CupOn the 14th of October Patangata Clay Target club hosted the100th anniversary shoot of the Douglas Rose Bowl along with theGunn Cup for skeet. These two trophies are highly sought after inthe Bay with teams from Gisborne to Woodville travelling to shootfor them. The day started off with rain and grey skies, but thankfully littlewind after the storm that passed through the country in thepreceding twenty four hours. The Gunn Cup was contested byseven teams from all the Bay clubs. Patangata and Wairoa weretied on 118/125 after the end of the contest. A short shoot off tookplace with Patangata going clear through station one and Wairoanot able to follow them through to station two after droppinga target. A victory to the Patangata team, with them hoping formore victories to follow throughout the day.Our thanks to John Harkness of Ground Level Garden Constructionfor his generous sponsorship of this event with the winning teamtaking home the $500 on offer and a commemorative tankard aswell. Two trophy matches of 30 triples and 25 single rise were shot forduring the day and once again we would like to thank our sponsorsof these events for putting up some very generous prize moneythat was keenly contested for. Our thanks to Iscar Pacific InnovativeCutting Tools, Black and White Accounting of Napier, and TargetProducts for making these events possible. The Douglas Rose Bowl is a magnificent solid silver trophy that iscontested for by the Bay clubs. It brings all of the province's clubstogether to shoot and a friendly rivalry was evident throughout theday. This had a bit of an edge on it with $2500 being available to thewinning club team, sponsored by local IT company Need a Nerd. This trophy has its origins in the early part of the 20th centuryand it was great to have the granddaughter of one of the originalcup presenters there on the day to present it to the winning team, along with commemorative tankards to honour 100 years of thisevent. You would think that with the calibre of shooters present it wouldbe easy to go out to the traps and shoot 20 targets in two visits often targets, but with the prize money and holding rights on offerthis was not to be.Patangata 1 the defending holders shot first with 49/50 to have theearly lead with Wairoa, Dannevirke and the two HB central teamsalso there on 49/50, and Woodville hot on their heels with a 48/50.Patangata then went out for the second round again shooting49/50, the only other team to hold their nerve was Dannevirke, who also shot 49/50. Into the shoot off and the pressure wasshowing. Patangata dropped three targets in their five targeteach shoot off. Dannevirke held their nerve and dropped only twotargets in their shootoff to take the big prize. Dannevirke were ahappy bunch indeed and it was good to hear them say that theprize money would go back to the club for facility improvements.Once again our thanks to Need a Nerd, our sponsor of this event, for their very generous sponsorship. Also a big thanks to Peter andJane Dunkerley for the donation of two Hams for lunch, MeganTurner for the catering, and, the ladies who helped out in thekitchen, bar and office. TRAPSHOOTINGIN THE WINDBy Phil RossMy home throughout almost my entirelife has been Southern California's InlandEmpire bordering the Mojave Desert, andmy home field has been Redlands ShootingPark. Because of that I have been exposed toa significantly above-average degree of dryand windy conditions during my shootingcareer. Arid areas in Southern California, particularly those abutting mountains arevery prone to afternoon winds. Sometimesthis arid destination receives winds for theentire day, winds strong enough to blowover semi-trucks and trailers driven atspeed.Earlier in my career I travelledthroughout the United States and wasfortunate to experience shooting underwindy, yet "different" conditions due toextreme cold or extreme humidity. Wehave two different natural parametersto consider when talking about windyconditions, temperature and air density. And I have yet to address how moving aircan affect the flight of the target. Natureprovides us with more than one parameterto consider and from which to learn if wewant to shoot well in the wind. The first aspect a shooter shouldconsider when shooting in the wind is notonly to observe that it is windy but also tounderstand the direction of the wind. It ishelpful to pay attention to the direction ofthe wind which can sometimes be subtle.Stand at the fence and observe exactly whatthe wind is doing on the field. You must beaware if the wind is a headwind, a tailwind,a left-to-right wind or a right-to-left wind. The very toughest wind to work with isknown as a "swirl" or a re-directional windwhere one faces for example a headwind,a tail wind, left-to-right or right-to-leftwind all within the same hour or less. It isimportant to understand such a situationcan happen while you are shooting an eventof 100 targets. Sometimes a redirectionalwind can manifest itself while the shooteris on a single post! There are also differences in approachesand challenges when you shoot in coldwinds versus heated winds. Desert winds--generally heated--do not present the samequality of harshness found in cold winds. The likelihood of becoming physicallyuncomfortable in cold winds and one'slikelihood of experiencing temperatureinducedfatigue is higher in cold than inheat. Cold winds in contrast to heatedwinds, can bring more of a "jumpy" qualityto the target during the initial time of thetarget's flight. I also believe cold weather ismore likely to impinge upon the shooter'sability to react fluidly and quickly, dueto encumbrances from cold-weatherclothing.I suggest cold is a much tougherenvironment under which to score thanhot weather, even without winds. Targetsin a cold weather situation are usuallymore challenging than targets in warmweather due to the shooter's physicalityand, I suspect, the target being influencedby denser air. In very cold situations,if a shooter feels uncomfortably coldhe/she can feel lethargic. All-seasonmotorcyclists are particularly familiar withthis phenomenon. Appropriate clothingis important in all outdoor activities forcomfort and safety.WIND DIRECTION:It is imperative that the direction of thewind be in the forefront of your awarenessin windy conditions. Let us first considerthe headwind.A head wind will act upon the target tomake it elevate higher than it would undercalm conditions. A headwind changesyour hold over the trap house. Rhythmand timing remain the same, but the gunmust be held higher on the trap house. Youare not drifting from best trapshootingpractice, but you are trying to breakthe target with the least amount of gunmovement. If you find yourself shooting ina headwind and holding a medium or lowgun, your travel to the target will be muchgreater than necessary. In a tailwind, the shooter must bringthe gun down to the house. Tailwindsimpact targets by forcing them downward.Once again the shooter is attempting tobreak the target with the least amount ofmovement. A shooter's tendency to use a"normal" hold above the house would verylikely induce too fast a move towards thetarget, a target that is very difficult to catchand the potential for shooting above thetarget is greatly increased.A left-to-right wind on Post Onepresents the shooter with a hard-left targetthat will go higher. When the shootermoves to Post Five, the hard right becomesa lower and far more diverse driving right. The hard right-hand target from Post Fivetakes more of an acute angle and oftenpresents a diving trajectory. In contrastto this increase in sharpness on Post Five, the acute left-angle target on Post Onewill have its acuteness diminished but willpresent problems by flying higher in a leftto-rightwind.A wind blowing from right-to-left willpresent a mirror of the target reactionspresented by the left-to-right wind. Theacute-left target on Post One will tend tobe driven at a more acute angle, and itsprojectory will often be diving. On Post Fivea wind blowing from right-to-left will causethe hard-right target to climb and not seekangles as acute as under calm conditions. One must be aware of these changes asthey are predictable during crosswinds. Youmust be aware of the direction and degreeof the wind velocity at all times while onthe line. Gun hold on the house fromPosts One through Five are determinedby the wind and by the "static" setting ofthe mechanical trap. If we observe andlogically surmise targets from a particularpost will be higher than usual (e.g. a leftangle in a left-to-right crosswind will flyhigher than usual), the gun hold must beadjusted accordingly. If we observe that aright-to-left wind pushes targets in a righttrajectory downward and in a more drivingand acute trajectory we must bring thehold down on the house. Observations andexperience are paramount in learning toaddress wind driven targets.LOCATION:We are also well served to address otheraspects that are very closely related toshooting in the wind: terrain and relativehumidity. There might be a gully, bump orundulation below the target rather than arelatively flat field of consistent topographyand temperature.I do not enjoy shooting on a trap fieldthat has a water feature in proximity to thestand. A water feature will often introducecolder and denser air than the atmosphereof the rest of the range. The denser airwill often cause a target to "hop" due toa sudden "shot" of added lift and then togunshot 45

slow and lose altitude a bit more quicklythan expected due to a decrease in speedcaused by air resistance.Paying attention to terrain and weatheris paramount. Always look for the"predictable yet unfamiliar" characteristicsin a target's flight. The topography belowthe target will often cause unfamiliar targethabits. "Heavier" or humid air will not allowa target to mobilise itself with erraticmovements in the wind as easily as in dryair. I have observed that heavier air tendsto dampen erratic target movements toan observable degree. I have also observedtargets can quickly become almostimpossible to hit due to immediate almostupon-launchwind effects that occur mostoften when the air is dry.LOOK TWICE:I believe there needs to be a little or nochange in one's rhythm and timing whenshooting in the wind. But I emphaticallybelieve one must develop skills to allowwhat I call a "second look" when shootingin the wind. This merely means you mustknow you are best served by looking at theflying target a bit longer than you wouldunder quiet wind conditions. The necessary skills are developedstarting with a quiet eye and disciplinedpreparation before calling for the target.Taking a second look can be illustrated witha headwind, where one may want to snapshoota target as opposed to your typicalmanner under normal conditions. Undernon-windy conditions, you first take alook at the target, subconsciously make aninitial move to the target and consciouslymove to the target and slap the triggerunder the guidelines of your most commonconditioned timing. In windy conditionsyou may have looked at the target in yourtypical fashion, but the target may havemoved another yard or two and made anunexpected move, sometimes a jump oreven two jumps. If you do not take a goodsecond look at the target prior to shootingyou take away your timing and triggercontrol and are likely to "stab" at the targetor shoot too reactively for that unusualwind condition.I wrote an article for Shotgun Sportsregarding trigger control (July 2011). Readthat article to see how you can stay withinyour normal ranges of trigger control evenin the wind. Shooting in the wind shouldnot jeopardise your timing. It merelyinvolves taking a second look. After all, that second look is really no more thana really good, slightly longer look at thetarget flight than on a calm day. On a calmday that target will fly at the same altitudeand angle and with the same movementalmost every time, but when you get intowind movement things will not be sopredictable.Winds do not affect target movementall that much until you face conditionsof 20 to 25 m.p.h. When you start dealingwith 30 m.p.h. and higher winds you willhave even more target hop. When targetshop, that target presentation demands asecond look to understand and recognisethe movement, particularly as we age andour reactions slow or if you cannot shootas much as you would to remain sharp andmaintain timing.Success in wind shooting relates to theeloquence of the timing of how the shooterlooks at the target. In other words, learninghow to take a second look is a fundamentalof successful windy day shooting.PRACTICE:Wind shooting can be more difficult ifyou do not shoot very often in the wind. Most people shoot under conditions thatusually present winds of 5-15 m.p.h. Thatwind speed will provide little or no changein the trajectory of the target. When windvelocities reach about 25 m.p.h. the targetflight will begin to reflect changes intrajectories in both direction and velocity.Targets thrown in winds above 45 m.p.h.present a situation that is not takenseriously by many shooters because theyvery rarely find themselves shooting undersuch conditions. In my local experiences inSouthern California these conditions occurmore regularly.Palmdale's Fin and Feather Club forexample presents wind conditions that areoften above 25 m.p.h. In late fall throughto early spring, Palmdale can presentthe added challenge of shooting in coldwinds. Even the areas can deliver coldweather during approximately half the year.California's Mojave Desert has producedsome fine trapshooters like perennial All-American, ATA Hall of Fame member andCalifornia State Hall of Fame memberJimmy Heller. Jimmy is a fine "windshooter". He grew up in the high desertnear Palmdale and honed a good deal ofhis considerable shot gunning skills on therange. I attended a Winter Chain Shoot atPalmdale in the early spring of 2010 thatwas not a large shoot (likely due to thecold and windy conditions) at which Jimmywon the Handicap trophy buckle from the27 yard line with a score of "only" 89. Theconditions were horrendous. Jimmy's scorewas approximately nine targets higher thansecond place.A colleague of mine asked Jimmyabout his technique when shooting in thewind. Jimmy very eloquently stated thatwhen trapshooting in the wind, he takesa little longer to isolate the target in hismind's eye. In other words he looks at alarger area around the target before hetakes total visual focus upon the target.I feel that this is Jimmy's way of tellingyou how he takes a second look. Jimmyis consciously aware of the potential fora target to move from a consistent andpredictable flight path in windy conditions. To guard against losing a visual "lock" (weare looking at unpredictable movement, after all), Jimmy visually takes in a largerpart of the zone around the target. Thistechnique is disciplined, conditioned,pre-visualised and practised over manytargets and certainly over more than oneseason of shooting! It is not mastered oreven adequately absorbed in one weekendof shooting under windy conditions. The technique of taking a second look isone that can be stated in more than onemanner, but it should be investigated andpractised by any shooter who wants to dowell under windy condition whether inor outside the competitive environment.Challenging conditions can make you abetter shooter. If you have gone out andchallenged yourself and determined whichvenues have significant differences fromcalmer venues you will be be increasingyour shooting prowess. Santa Maria,California's trap range has a fog conditiondue to its close proximity to the PacificOcean (approximately five miles to thewest of that range), and the wind will oftenarrive and blow the fog back to the oceanand create its own particular havoc. I haveseen winds at Santa Maria anywhere from20 to 40 m.p.h. depending upon the timeof the year and larger weather patternsimpacting California's Central Coast.Almost every trap range you visit will havea significant manner in which the wind willblow and how targets will be affected. Myhome club Redlands Shooting Park hasmany windy days where the winds comeout of the San Bernardino Mountains tothe north and produce left-to-right winds. This creates some unusually "odd" targetmovement not typically seen at that club.We have also had has some cold windy daysduring competition when it was between35-45 degrees with winds up to 35-40m.p.h. These conditions are unusual forRedlands, but they can happen. Be aware!Think of winds impinging upon the rangeas a factor giving that range its own unique"signature". Learn to pay attention to thesituation/s as they arise and learn yourvenues regarding how the wind brings aContinued on page 5646 gunshot

eferees’cornerBy Blue FreemanCongratulations to all who were involved inrunning both the two day 400 target NSSANZ skeet championships at Thames andthe 2012 Skeet Nationals at Waikato. Both ofthese events went off really well with greatsupport from both ends of both islands, and also the core group of Australian skeetshooters. While the weather was a greatleveler at Thames, the horizontal rain hadcleared by Monday and the entire week atWaikato was rain free, and wind free for mostof the week too. Fantastic conditions really, and good scores generated at both events.A special thank you to all the official refereeswho ran the shoot-offs and the team matchesat the Skeet Nationals. While a few seemedto be doing more than their share, a good halfof the referees in attendance were competingin the shoot-offs and team matches orperforming other official functions. To thosewho had the lion’s share of the work, we allthank you very much.Referees' appointmentsThere was one new referee appointmentlast month; Roger Bidois from Taumarunui.Welcome aboard Roger.Safety Related Rules: Footwear. With more and more NZCTA membersgoing to the USA shoot, there are questionsbeing asked about the footwear safety rule.NZCTA rules demand that nobody is to shootin Jandals, thongs (flip flops) or bare feet.Anyone who has been to the World skeetshoot will know that flip flops are a commonform of footwear for the USA shooters, sowhy does the NZCTA have the rule?Well, the reason is certainly nothing to dowith shot protection. A very graphic emailwhich circulated a couple of years agoshowed what happens when you close thegun while the muzzle is resting on your footand the trigger is pulled. Ouch. The reason for our rule (Rule 4-02 o) isprimarily to do with trip hazard, and theway that we permit shooters to move fromstation to station in DTL with shells in theirguns. While that is not the case with skeet, most of the NZCTA safety rules are commonbetween DTL and Skeet, given that the vastmajority of our shooters shoot more thanone discipline. Should a club feel that otherforms of footwear are dangerous, the clubcan specifically prohibit them on their owngrounds. I know some clubs would like to ban“Crocs” as being fashion hazards, but theyare not safety hazards. There is also the matter of decorum, andthe likes of sleeveless singlets, bare feet orflip flops don’t present the correct imagethat the sport needs to obtain and maintainpublic support. (Rule 4-12 a & b coversthis without specifics). This factor is moreimportant than many people realise, but Idon’t believe that the NZCTA would evermandate the minimum length of a man’sshorts, or minimum sleeve length of a shirtas the English CPSA does. (No more than15cm above the knee and 10cm from thearm pit seam respectively for those who areinterested!)AGM RemitsThere has been much recent correspondenceto the council regarding last year’s AGMremits and the fact that a number of thoseremits have not resulted in rule changes. Now is probably a good time to explain whata remit is.Remit. Refer (a matter for decision) to anauthority.A remit is a request from a body (themembership) for a committee (theexecutive) to make a decision on an issue. The voting which is carried out by clubs atthe AGM decides whether or not the issuewill appear on the executive's agenda or not.At the same time it gives the executive anidea of the level of support for the initiative. Thus, if a remit is accepted by a majority vote, that majority assures the membership thatthe executive will investigate and determinethe issue. The vote has no bearing on theoutcome of the issue. There are many factors which may changebetween the time the remit is drafted andthe AGM vote. There is also the requirementof the executive to ensure that the majorityof shooters are considered in any changes, and the simple fact that the clubs vote onthe remits without any benefit of opendiscussion or explanations. Remits are simplythe membership tasking the executive toinvestigate and decide on an issue. Theexecutive does consider all remits – even theones which are lost at the AGM.Skeet Voice Release SystemsThose who attended the Skeet Nationals willbe aware that there is still some work to bedone on the voice release systems to ensureconsistent and reliable target release from allstations. The Waikato club had tested and retestedthe systems in fair and foul weather andwas convinced that all was well. I know thatboth Dean Everett and David Muggeridgewere gutted by the failures which occurredafter the successful testing which had beenperformed. Your executive will be makingrepresentation to the manufacturer toidentify and eliminate the cause of theinconsistencies.More referees needed for the 2014 DTLWorldsWe are still short of referees from theWaikato region; anyone willing to helpthe sport from that area should liaise witheither Jim Dobson (Bay of Plenty) or RonThompson (Waitemata) to undergo the test.We are specifically looking for DTL refereesfor the Worlds in 15 months time. Again, ifyou want to help at the Worlds, we have anumber of vacancies for referees, and wouldbe quite happy to have three or four validatedreferees for each field. Thanks again folks: Please check your gunsand your scores, and stay safe over the festiveseason.Blue ■FACTS+ Google is actually the commonname for a number with a millionzeros ..+ It takes glass one million yearsto decompose, which meansit never wears out and can berecycled an infinite amount oftimes!+ Gold is the only metal thatdoesn't rust, even if it's buriedin the ground for thousands ofyears.gunshot 47

We arenot sure why it is so effective; just try this method when it rains heavily. Thismethod was told by a Police friend who had experienced and confirmed it. Itis useful...even driving at night. Most of the motorists would turn on HIGH or FASTEST SPEED of the wipersduring heavy downpour, yet the visibility in front of the windshield is stillbad.......In the event you face such a situation, just put on your SUNGLASSES (anymodel will do), and miracles! All of a sudden, your visibility in front of yourwindshield is perfectly clear, as if there is no rain.Make sure you always have a pair of SUNGLASSES in your car. You are notonly helping yourself to drive safely with good vision, but also might saveyour friend's life by giving him this idea.. Try it yourself and share it with yourfriends!!!!Amazingly, you still see the drops on the windshield, but not the sheet of rainfalling. You can see where the rain bounces off the road. It works to eliminatethe "blindness" from passing cars. Or the "kickup" if you are following a carin the rain. They ought to teach this little tip in driver's training. It really doeswork. This is a good warning. I wonder how many people knew about this???Another good tip: A 36 year old female had an accident several weeks ago. Itwas raining, though not excessively when her car suddenly began to hydroplaneand literally flew through the air. She was not seriously injured but verystunned at the sudden occurrence! When she explained to the Police Officerwhat had happened, he told her something that every driver should know -NEVER DRIVE IN THE RAIN WITH YOUR CRUISE CONTROL ON. Shethought she was being cautious by setting the cruise control and maintaininga safe consistent speed in the rain...But the Police Officer told her that if the cruise control is on, your car willbegin to hydro-plane when the tyres lose contact with the road, and your carwill accelerate to a higher rate of speed making you take off like an aeroplane. She told the Officer that was exactly what had occurred. The Officer said thiswarning should be listed, on the driver's seat sun-visor - NEVER USE THECRUISE CONTROL WHEN THE ROAD IS WET OR ICY, along with the airbagwarning. We tell our teenagers to set the cruise control and drive a safe speed- but we don't tell them to use the cruise control only when the road is dry.The only person the accident victim found who knew this, (besides theOfficer), was a man who'd had a similar accident, totalled his car and sustainedsevere injuries.NOTE: Some vehicles (like the Toyota Sienna Limited XLE) will not allow youto set the cruise control when the windshield wipers are on.Even if you send this to 15 people and only one of them doesn't know about it,it's still worth it. You may have saved a life.Jon Beddis HOAgunshot 49

South IslandSouth Zone Sporting ChampionshipBy Ron MaddenThe South Island Sporting Clay Shooters had the pleasurable taskof hosting the South Zone South Island Sporting shoot. This wasour second Association shoot within a month, and after putting onan extremely tough shoot at Timaru we were ‘on notice’ to producea more shooter friendly event. The shoot was set up at Phil Brown’sEnfield property in North Otago, and first up was Saturday’s cashtrophy day. Fine weather and 7, 3 trap stands set in gently rollingcropping country greeted shooters. We would shoot 50 on the trotand then have a good break for lunch, and with the luxury of new gearand not one breakdown it ran like clockwork. It is again many thanksand our gratitude to Graeme Brown, his boys and Company TargetProducts for their support of our Club. We set all sorts of targets;downhill rabbits finishing at your feet, overhead simo pairs, quitea few very missable close targets, and some good distance crossersand a loooong battue. Peter Drake brought traps all the way up fromSouthland and along with Phil Brown and his new Promatic traps setup two stands for the competition. It is good to see others getting intotarget setting, enjoying more than just pulling the trigger and trying tobeat the shooters with cunning and guile, failing that just good targets. This shoot saw some locals from up the Haka, Dunback and Waimateareas come and shoot a bit of sporting which was indeed pleasing forthe sport's future. Hopefully we may be luring a few over to the darkside! Another very pleasing aspect was three Juniors turning up tocompete both days, a shame that we don’t have as many lady shooterscompeting. It was slightly disappointing that being only an hour from Dunedin,we didn’t see more of those old, die hard Sporto’s from Otago andSouthland join the fun.Huge public thanks must go to Phil and Julie Brown who gave usfull run of their farm and facilities, not to mention feeding theworkers morning tea and lunch on Thursday and Friday. Very muchappreciated indeed. Thanks also Phil for the rounds of skeet andreverse skeet doubles, engineered by Mark Vessey, which made agreat Friday afternoon interlude after setting up was complete. Mark, atruly international shooting champion, was more than ready to muckin, make suggestions and generally help where needed. He was alsooverheard helping more than a few shooters with small tips to improvetheir scores. To the local school children fund raising for an overseastrip, excellent burgers, cakes and muffins were more than we needed. And to the local Enfield publican who arrived on Saturday afternoonwith more than enough beer to feed a battalion, as Phil Brown andPeter Drake will attest!Sunday was the South Zone shoot, so Saturday afternoon saw dramaticchanges of stands and a few trap adjustments to give shooters a totallydifferent set of targets for the day. It was slightly tougher, befitting theshoot status, but again only positive comments from shooters, whichwas gratifying indeed. It’s quite interesting to see how many totallydifferent targets you can get from moving a stand from the bottomof a hill to the top, or 20 metres left or right which we did, having achange after each 50, giving shooters four totally different sets oftargets during the weekend. It was great to see everyone, includingvisitors, chip in and we were totally cleaned up, traps on trailers, allrubbish in the dump by 4 pm, and all that was left was the pick upswhich we were paying the fund raising school children to do.Mark Vessey showed his true ability and class taking out both days, butwas pushed by our own S.I.S.C.S. The shoot off went for nearly tworounds with Dean Everett prevailing after 38 targets over Gary Vittleand Graham Geater. Rob Anderson shot well, missing his 37th targetand taking out the B grade. Parkin and Colin Pritchard joined the A graders for the HOA shootoff. By the end of the day and after shooting 250 targets in the shootoff there were still 3 shooters left (Ian Marshall, Paul Currie and Martinvan de Wetering) in contention when the shoot off was called off. Inhindsight it may have been better to shoot a little longer in the morefavourable wind conditions. The B grade had been sorted out withColin Pritchard taking this from Bruce Parkin and Allan Beaver in 3rd.Sunday 22ndUnfortunately the weather conditions on the Sunday were far lessthan ideal with blustery winds present from the start of the day andshowers forecast to arrive. The single Rise shoot off continued oncethe shooters had arrived. Unfortunately the day did not start well forIan, missing a low target early on, leaving Martin and Paul to continuethe competition for the HOA. After 40 targets it was all over whenMartin missed, leaving Paul Currie the victor. Any shoot off goingover 300 targets is always a great achievement, but given the windyconditions, this was a hard fought and excellent shoot off.The Triples event was underway by the time the Single Rise finishedwith 57 entries. While there were no possible scores (hardly surprisingin the wind), there were four scores of 49 shot by Jimmy Dobson, LaurieCoppins, Shane Ashforth and David Wordley. The eventual shoot offwas won by Shane Ashforth with David 1st A, Jimmy 2nd and Laurie3rd. The B grade was won by Lloyd Agnew from Mitchell Petersen andRaoul Winter. In C grade, local college shooter Brandon Kelly tookthe medal with a 42 outright from Colin Petersen and Wayne Winter. The Points score was a real challenge with not only the wind, but alsosome rain arriving. Despite this, Rob Anderson and Chris Cassinmanaged to shoot a possible score and there were a further fourshooters just one point down. B grade saw Colin Pritchard and RogerSwney both shoot a 70, while C grade was won by Wayne Winter witha score of 70 as well. The shoot off saw Chris Cassin take the title, giving the Hawke's Bay visitors two wins for the day. Rob Andersonwas 1st A Grade with Mark Walsh 2nd and Mason Reed 3rd.The final event of Single Barrel had three possibles in A grade byMartin van de Wetering, Paul Anderson and Rob Anderson (norelation). After shooting well over the weekend Rob was not to bedenied with Martin taking 1st A and Paul 2nd. B grade was won byMitchell Petersen from Lloyd Agnew and Craig Pennell. In C gradethere was a shoot off with two on 20, won by Wayne Winter over ColinPetersen. The High Gun for the weekend was won by Mason Reed with anexcellent score of 227/235. Paul Currie took out the A grade and ColinPritchard the B, while Wayne Winter was C grade High Gun. SOUTH ISLAND COMPAK CHAMPIONSHIPGERALDINE GUN CLUB20th October 2012 – Geraldine Gun Club Trophy ShootSaturday morning dawned fine and frosty but quickly warmed toa pleasant morning as the final target trajectories were adjustedand set. Four Compak parcours had been set, two on the clubgrounds and two over the road in the forestry plantation of ourobliging neighbour, Mr Bryce Pierce, to whom we extend ourthanks. A challenging range of targets were set, most notably onFiocchi Field set inside the pine trees. These targets were closeand short, while still providing all the compulsory trajectories overthe Compak rectangle. The upland game shooters managed thetargets fine, but those with maimai’s on lakes had a bit of troublewith the close quartered nature of the field.Falcon Field and AgRural Field received much favourable commenton the technical nature and challenge of the targets presented onthese.A somewhat disappointing turnout of 25 shooters contested forthe impressive range of trophies kindly organised by the Sheedfamily of our local Geraldine Supervalue supermarket, whodonated a range of wines, beers, beverages and glassware fromthemselves and their suppliers. Somehaste was needed as a nasty southerly change was predictedfor the afternoon. When it arrived it played havoc with the lastsquads shooting the two fields on the club ground. Some say thetargets were brought closer, and others say the wind affectedthem unpredictably – depends on who was doing the shooting Isuppose. With four fields and only seven squads smooth runningthrough was always going to be difficult as the need for refereesand markers for the shooting squad inevitably meant that squadscould not move onto the next field as soon as we would have liked. In the end shooting was finished by 3:45 and the only shoot-off (3rdB grade) was resolved by coin toss. He willbe available if required to do some small projects and maybehelp occasionally with his favourite task of helping with sometarget setting. It has been an extremely busy year for Sporting, with manyshoots dotting the calendar and very good numbers at most ofthem. It does bode well for the future of our discipline indeed!Looking to this year it doesn’t get any quieter at all, with atrophy day, Islands and culminating with the Nationals all atWanganui. The Grand Prix is in Rotorua, and Oceania is beinghosted by the Australians probably in Victoria, then theirNationals later in the year in South Australia. As usual team selection is down to the final day of the Nationalsand with tough targets being thrown at the S.I.’s, shooters willbe hoping for a ‘gentler’ course setter and the hope of buildinggood scores to make the team. That said, the handicap system employed grades everyone tothe top score, so it is the same for all competitors. As is the norm the Sporting Clay Committee funds will coverindividual team members' entries to Oceania, dependingon funds available, and the NZCTA Consolidated fund willprovide Team entries and T shirts.Eight of us recently attended the Australian Field & GameNationals, and with around 380 Aussie shooters lining upwe knew it was going to be a daunting task to be there at theend. As Geoff Wells eloquently said, the targets were brilliant,we were not!! It was hard, unrelenting, no eyesight tests, butlots at distance, every target could be seen easily but whetheryou could actually hit it, another matter indeed. Despite noKiwi featuring on the stage everyone enjoyed it immensely. Itmust be the only sport in the world where you get absolutelyhammered and go home happy and look forward to the nextone. Not the same for the Aussie’s, an absolutely amazing 3x 25 on day one by Brenton Irons, and 3 x 24 by Robert Hallsaw them lead and never relent, in fact Brenton shot as goodas anyone I have ever seen over such demanding fields. 25, 25,25, 22, 22, 24, 22, 24, 23. A class act indeed.Brenton Irons: 212/225Robert Hall: 209/225Adam duRose: 207/225 (after shoot off)Our own Brian Deadman shot well for 20th place 193/225David Alley 32nd on 189 and Geoff Wells 186/225.The rest of us need to practise and practise and…It does bring into question the age old situation of whetherto put on those sorts of targets and try and be competitiveinternationally or go with the majority of local shooters andjust shoot for fun. Timaru was probably a case in hand, yet Iwould say that the Australian Nationals made Timaru looklike a tough duck shooters' day! I suppose it’s just a matterof working out what we want and where we want to stand, whether our Sporting shooters want to aspire to higherhonours, even hold their own at big local and internationalcompetitions or just plug away and break targets in a ‘skeet inthe tree’s’ situation. It is interesting that the Aussies with over 60 squads competingmanaged to put up 7 u/o good quality shotguns as prizes, not to mention enough ammo to keep most of us going allyear! It was fun, great fun and the Aussies made us extremelywelcome although by Sunday night we had heard every sheepjoke known to man. I’d urge shooters after an experience of alife time to consider next year’s Nationals which are being heldin Sorrento in South Australia. Imagine all that wine too!!! ■gunshot 55

Den Wilkins (Whitianga), Colin Shaw (Taupo) and Ken Fitzgerald (Tokoroa) winners of the Gold Coast Masters Games team skeet event.Pan Pacific Games shooting attracts three KiwisBy Colin ShawOf the 12,300 competitors in 40 sports competing at the Gold CoastPan Pacific Masters Games, three clay target shooters, Den Wilkins(Whitianga), Ken Fitzgerald (Tokoroa) and Colin Shaw (Taupo) had agreat time in shooting over 300 targets over three days, made up ofDTL, skeet and sporting. There were seven age groups in the competition from 35 to 70 plus,so medals were available in both the age groups or graded AA, A, B C.Our Kiwi trio did well in both the categories, but the highlight of thethree days was when the three won the skeet teams event. Each day aclubs team event was organized for members from clubs throughoutAustralia. The organisers chose to nominate the three from NewZealand as a club. The runners-up were the Shoal Haven team fromNew South Wales. The Gold Coast Clay Target Club is a great facility approximately20 minutes from the buzzing Surfers Paradise. The next Pan PacificGames will be held in 2014 and is well worth a visit. ■Continued from page 46particular signature. Soon that signature will become familiarto you with experience at the venue. If a shooter is exposed to"odd" conditions as often as possible and makes a strong effort toobserve and become familiar with the situation, that shooter willlearn to break a good score under those circumstances.Wind shooting is like everything we do in the shooting world;without a significant amount of dedicated exposure to anyparticular circumstance one can't advance. We must understandwhat a second look really means. We must also understand andinternalise that we have time when shooting in the wind, time toshoot after taking a stronger look at the target. Look to some of thegreat shooters who have mastered the art of shooting in the coldand wind (of course Dan Bonillas, Daro Handy and Ray Staffordcome to mind); they have all paid their dues by shooting in odd/windy environments and learned to prevail under such testingconditions. There are many wonderful stories about those who have shottruly amazing scores while shooting under windy, miserableconditions. I have watched strong wind shooters many times andit has been a joy to observe their prowess. I can summarise it thisway: Shooting in the wind involves consideration of, and familiaritywith, these ine major areas.1 Appropriate dress and eye protection.2 Understanding how to "read' the wind using indicators ofdirection and strength.3 Sensitivity to and awareness of target (behaviour/s due to thewind's influence.4 Understand how range topography can influence the target'sbehaviour.5 Understanding how humidity and air density may vary thewind's effects upon targets.6. Acknowledging you must not let windy conditions changeyour rhythm and timing.7 Knowing the need to take that important second look whenshooting in the wind.8 The ability to appropriately adjust gun hold in relation to thetrap house due to wind-driven changes in target altitude.9 Understanding that reading an article such as this is notenough; you must make a strong effort to seek experienceshooting in the wind to fully learn how to do it well. The afore-mentioned are empirical, not esotoric. If you followthat advice, I am sure your windshooting prowess can't help butimprove. ■Phil Ross has won trap events over the last seven decades. SOUTH ISLAND SPORTING CHAMPIONSHIPSand travel it can add up to a very expensive weekend indeed. We were looking forward to a great weekend of Sportingtargets. Saturday went off without a hitch or breakdown largelydue to our benefactor Graeme Brown and his 20 new and almostnew Promatic traps. Huge thanks must go to Graeme and his boysHayden and Simon for their efforts, availability and readiness tohelp with targets, ammo and anything else needed to run such ashoot. As with any Sporting shoot, labour will make or break anyset up and with Andy McDonald, David Reid, Steve Gill, BrianForrest and myself (not much use really) we had plenty to do.Graeme had been out several times to recce and photograph thesites and plan out the four ‘old style’ Parcours. We had 3 beautifuldays of norwest weather and strong winds to set the targets, soas one would expect Saturday’s Cash Trophy day saw a cloudy dayand southerly winds! We also had to change one complete set upas the farmer wanted to work up his paddocks where we had shotfall. Luckily the rain stopped as the shoot started, and then came inthat evening just as the last wave of shooters started. Not sure where to start with Sunday’s efforts. One couldn’t askfor a better day, no wind, clear blue sky and fresh snow on the hilltops. The targets proved most controversial I must say; Saturdayevening saw us trying to reset the 4 Parcours in snow flurries anddriving rain, only to abandon the task around 7:30pm and startagain at 6:30 Sunday morning. I’m not sure of the absolute art (ifthere is one) of target setting, but we thought we had it aboutright for a Championship match of this standing. We wanted somuch for this shoot to work well and have everyone to go homecontented. To be honest that didn’t come off at all as we hadplanned. Maybe Saturday’s targets should have been on Sunday, and tone it down even more for Saturday, as one of our crewsuggested. Wrong target menu selections and targets that werejust too ambitious for all our abilities saw it not to our expectationsor desired outcome. I do appreciate many shooters had comefrom all parts of the country to compete and could rightly expecta certain standard for the money spent. I know with hotels, mealsA Mafia Godfather finds out that his bookkeeper,Guido, has cheated him out of $10,000,000.00His bookkeeper is deaf. That was the reason he got the job in the first place. It was assumed that Guido would hear nothing so hewould never have to testify in court. When the Godfather goes to confront Guido about hismissing $10 million, he takes along his lawyer whoknows sign language. The Godfather tells the lawyer, "Ask him where themoney is !"The lawyer, using sign language, asks Guido, "Where'sthe money ?"Guido signs back, "I don't know what you are talkingabout."The lawyer tells the Godfather, "He says he doesn'tknow what you're talking about."The Godfather pulls out a pistol, puts it to Guido's headand says, "Ask him again or I'll kill him !"The lawyer signs to Guido, "He'll kill you if you don't tellhim."Guido trembles and signs, "OK! You win !""The money is in a brown briefcase, buried behind theshed at my cousin Bruno's house".The Godfather asks the lawyer, "What did he say ?"The lawyer replies, "He says you don't have the balls topull the trigger."Don't you just love lawyers?gunshot 57

Affairs of the HeartHow many folks do you know who say they don't want to drinkanything before going to bed because they'll have to get up duringthe night!! I asked my Doctor why do people need to urinate somuch at night time. The answer from my Cardiac Doctor: Gravity holds water in thelower part of your body when you are upright (legs swell). Whenyou lie down and the lower body (legs and etc) seeks level with thekidneys. It is then that the kidneys remove the water because it iseasier. This then ties in with the last statement!I knew you need your minimum water to help flush the toxins outofyour body, but this was news to me.Correct time to drinkwater... Very Important. From A CardiacSpecialist! Drinking water at a certain time maximizes itseffectiveness on the body:» 2 glasses of water after waking up - helps activate internal organs.» 1 glass of water 30 minutes before a meal - helps digestion.» 1 glass of water before taking a bath - helps lower blood pressure.» 1 glass of water before going to bed - avoids stroke or heart attack. Please pass this to the people you care about.I can also add to this...
