Laurel (ex-Sanko Laurel). IMO 8316352. Bulk carrier. Length 167 m, 5,672 t. Chilean flag. Classification<br />

society American Bureau of <strong>Ship</strong>ping. Built in 1985 in Toyohashi (Japan) by Kanasashi. Owned by<br />

Naviera Chilena del Pacifico (Chile). In February 2010, the ship is in Talcahuano (Chili) dry dock<br />

undergoing routine maintenance when an 8.8 magnitude earthquake strikes the country. Two tsunamis<br />

lift the Laurel up and out of the dock and thrust her onto the pier. The Laurel is finally sold for demolition<br />

as is in Mexico. Unknown <strong>des</strong>tination of demolition. 406$ per ton.<br />

Merce<strong>des</strong> (ex-Hedvig, ex-First Star, ex-Wakayama Maru). IMO 8000496. Bulk carrier.<br />

Length 268 m, 22,693 t. Maltese flag. Classification society Bureau Veritas. Built in<br />

1981 in Onishi (Japan) by Kurushima. Owned by Polembros <strong>Ship</strong>ping Ltd (Greece).<br />

Detained in 1999 in Aabenraa (Denmark) and in 2004 in Amsterdam (The Netherlands). Sold as is in<br />

China for demolition in India. 385 $ per ton.<br />

Norsul Sobral (ex-Mercantil Teresopolis, ex-Felicidade Ferraz, ex-Corina). IMO 7433098. Bulk<br />

carrier. Length 173 m, 7,296 t. Deflagged from Brazil to Comoros. Classification society Bureau<br />

Veritas. Built in 1982 in Niteroi (Brazil) by CCN Maua. Owned by Norsul Navegacao (Brazil).<br />

Detained in 2008 in San Antonio (Chile). Sold for demolition in Bangla<strong>des</strong>h in spite of the ban<br />

on importation of ships containing toxic materials issued by the High Court in May 2010. The ship just<br />

arrived in Chittagong and is « waiting for instructions » off the beaching plots.<br />
