Giving thanksIf the only prayer you said in your whole life was,“thank you,” that would suffice. ~Meister EckhartIt was after Christmas one year that I was sitting atgymnastics practice waiting on my daughters whenI decided to finish up Christmas thank you cards.Because we all spent so many hours together, theparents who sat during these practice times hadsome great conversations. Essentially, many parentswho came to practice also brought odds and endsto complete, and we normally sat to chit chat andfinish our tasks; incredibly, this particular evening Ifound them to be amazed by my notes of gratitude. This led to our conversation revolving around meand my quest to send little notes to all family andfriends who had blessed our Christmas in one way oranother. It was interesting that a majority of the parents whosat with me had never written a single thank youcard themselves, let alone expected their children towrite a note of thanks. Others defended themselveswith, “Why, when we can text or email?” or “I toldthem, that’s enough.” They were all amazed that I, “…wasted my time on this menial task when I could bedoing something more productive and move intothe 21st century with regard to communication.”The thing is, I was raised to believe that if one acceptsa gift of time, talent, or treasure a token of thanks isthe very least I could do. I did not and do not thinkthe cards go unnoticed or that the writing of them isa menial task. I still feel sincerely that everyone whoreceived (and still receives!) notes that Christmasappreciated the time we took and the small messagewe each had written. To this day, the childrenand I continue to write notes of thanks for all thegenerosity others bestow on us.Here is my, “Thank You!” to YOU… Although not ahandwritten note, I want to take the time to thankall faculty, staff, students, parents, and communitymembers for all YOUR generosity this school year.Donations of time, talent, and treasure aboundand are what it takes to make OUR school run botheffectively and efficiently. Together, WE are ensuringOldenburg Academy a strong and impressive legacy.Have a splendid Thanksgiving and may it be awonderful beginning to a holiday season filled withlove, gifting, and thankfulness toward others!Mrs. Bettina Rose, PrincipalStudies have shown that Catholic school graduates makegood citizens, deeply committed to social justice, the careof the poor and the planet, and are proud volunteers in thechurch and community. It is humbling when I reflect on my own religious communityand how our Sisters helped build schools on the smalldonations from immigrants who sacrificed greatly so thattheir children were educated in a faith based environment.Today, it is the donations from many that provide forOldenburg Academy’s rich legacy of providing over 155years of Catholic secondary education here in southeasternIndiana.May our loving God bless each of you for sharing your time, treasure and talents with us so that together we pass on theOA mission! Here at OA our blessings abound. I pause to share mythanksgiving litany with you!• For all of you who make the financial sacrifices to provide avalue based education for your son(s)/daughter(s).• For our generous benefactors who share their financialblessings with us so that OA is viable for future generations;due to all of you we achieved a mile stone and paid off ourdebt as of June 1, 2010! We also exceeded our 2009-2010$165,000 Annual Fund Goal and raised over $238,000!• For members of our Board of Trustees who through theirvolunteer efforts help develop strategic initiatives that aidus in fulfilling our mission.• For all our volunteers who through the gift of their time andtalent help serve the OA community in so many ways. Trulywithout you we wouldn’t be successful.• For our sponsors, the Sisters of St. Francis, who generouslyshare their property and buildings with us at a minimal cost.Did you know that we only pay the sisters $100 a YEAR forrental of the academic, music building and our campus?Did you know that we only cover the cost of utilities for theuse of ICA Hall?• For our students and alums for their Twister spirit anddedication.• For the world of opportunity for us to reach others andshare our mission so that together we can provide theworld with strong value-based leaders. There is much to be thankful for. Let us celebrate this seasonwith a heart full of thanks and gratitude as we continue totrust in an abundant God!Sr. Therese Gillman, OSF, PresidentCLOSE UP - 2
