Roller Chain LubricationLubrication is very important in roller chain transmission,and becomes especially important when stringentdemands are placed on chain performance.When lubrication is not complete, even the most advancedtransmission device will not realize its full servicelife. Under some conditions the device may wearout within a very short period of time. For this reason,exercise special care with respect to lubrication.1) The main reason for oiling and lubing roller chain is to minimizewear elongation of the chain and prevent corrosion.Wear elongation is caused by wear between the pin andbush in articulating parts.2) Roller chain is coated with oil before being packaged(except for stainless steel chain). This oil is a high grade oilthat prevents rust and provides lubrication. The oil preventsthe wear that frequently occurs in the initial stage ofoperation, and it works well with lubrication oil to maintain ahigh wear resistance.3) Avoid wiping the oil coating off of delivered roller chain, andavoid washing the chain with detergent or other cleaning agents.3.1 Oil application locations1) Roller chain wear occurs from wear between each pin andbush, and thus oil must be applied to these parts.2) On the slack part of the chain, apply lubrication oil to thegap between each outer plate and inner plate. If possible, removethe load that acts on the roller chain before lubing the chain.2) For roller chain that does not articulate, oil the chain sufficientlyand then apply a thick layer of grease around theroller chain to prevent corrosion.Sufficiently lube end fitting connections, even if these do notmove.3) For roller chain that is used outdoors, contact with rain andsnow will remove the lubrication and cause harmful corrosion,and thus a cover or other protection should be installed.If rain or snow does fall on the chain, remove the moistureand then promptly lube the chain and coat it with a thick layerof grease.SAE30100SAE40150SAE5022068 100 150 2203) Examples of lubrication at low and high temperatures (Table 3)The following oils are available when roller chain is used at low or high temperatures.
