T S U B A K I D R I V E C H A I NHandling Roller Chains and Sprockets1. How to Cut Roller ChainIf the chain you purchased is either a unit length (3,048mm) or on a reel, it is necessary for you to cut the chainto the necessary length.Using a chain vice and punchHow to cut a roller chainUsing a chain breaker1. 1 Using a chain vice and punch1) For riveted type roller chain, grind down one end ofthe outer plate's two pins (same side) to the surfaceof the plate. Be careful of the chain overheatingduring the grinding process. This process is unnecessaryfor Poly Steel Chain as there are no rivets. As RS08B-1to RS16B-1 use easy cutting pins, the rivets do notneed to be ground.2) Remove the cotter pin for cotter pin type roller chain.Grind the rivets of the pins until( they are flush with the plate. )Fig. 1 Rivet-type roller chainFig. 2 Grinding the pin ends3) Place the roller chain into the groove of the chainvise (see Accessories Section) and tighten thevice to secure the roller to be disassembled.Follow 1.3 and 1.4 for Poly Steel Chain andLambda chain. For multi-strand SUPER Roller Chain, place thelowest roller into the groove of the chain vice.Fig. 3 Setting the roller chain in the chain viceSetting SUPER Roller Chain4) Place a primary punch(see Accessories Section),according to chain size, onPrimary punchthe head of the ground pin,and then hit the head ofOuter platethe primary punch with ahammer. Make sure to hitVicethe pins alternatively toensure the pins are removedFig. 4 Tapping the pin withevenly and at the same the primary punchtime. Continue to tap thepin until just before the pin is removed from theouter plate.5) Use a secondary punch (see AccessoriesSection) to remove the pin completely from theouter link plate. Check to make sure that the bushwhere the pin was removed has not come looseor deformed. Do not use if loose or deformed.Safety precautionsMake sure to use a grinder when grinding theriveted portion of one end of the rivet-type pin.If it is extracted without being ground first, more time and effort will be spent, damagingthe chain.Do not reuse any removed parts.1. 2 Using a chain breaker1)2)For riveted type roller chain, grind down one end ofthe outer plate's twopins (same side) to thesurface of the link plate.(Same as 1.1) Removethe cotter pin for cotterpin type roller chain.Remove the two pinsfrom the same outerplate. Check to makesure that the bush whereFig. 5 Hot to cut a chain using a chain screwthe pin was removed has not come loose or deformed.Do not use if loose or deformed.Safety precautionsA chain breaker (see Accessories Section) is atool made for cutting chain, and can cut rollerchain that is set on a machine. In this case, it isnecessary beforehand to support the load onthe roller chain and the weight of the roller chainitself to prevent it from falling after being cut.Do not reuse any removed parts.1. 3 How to cut Poly Steel Chain1)2)Support the outer plate of the chain in the cradleand push down on the pinhead with the exclusivepunch. Then lightly hit the head of the punch usinga hammer.Avoid using excess force on the engineering plasticpart, as there is a possibility of causing damage.CradleFig. 6 Poly Steel Chain set in the cradleExclusivepunchCradleBefore Use For Safe Use Standard Roller Chains Lube-Free Roller Chains Heavy Duty Roller Chains Corrosion Resistant Roller Chains Specialty Roller Chains Accessories Selection HandlingFig. 7 Cutting Poly Steel Chain158
