LHHS Summer Reading/Writing/Technology Requirements for Honors English 3-4Dear Parent/Guardian/Student:Lake Havasu Unified School District #1 fosters an interest in and a habit of reading/writing. In line withthis philosophy, the Lake Havasu High School English Department is mandating a summerreading/writing requirement for all incoming tenth graders enrolled in sophomore Honors English.Research states: Being able to read complex text independently and proficiently is essential for high achievementin college and the workplace and important in numerous life tasks. Current trends suggest that if students cannot read challenging texts with understanding—if theyhave not developed the skill, concentration, and stamina to read such texts—they will read less ingeneral. To grow, our students must read a lot, and more specifically, they must read a lot of “complex”texts—texts that offer them new language, new knowledge, and new modes of thought. We want to encourage students to become lifelong readers and to improve their critical thinking skillsthrough reading/writing. For these reasons, we are requiring incoming sophomore students tocomplete the summer project. Each student is expected to research a current environmental, political, or social issue, and to find anovel that connects to the current issues of our world. Students will be required to express theconnections through a written analysis. *Please see instructions page for more details*Summer break can be a time for students to become enlightened by the issues that exist in our modernworld, and how authors draw on these issues to create amazing literature.Happy Reading,Mrs. AndersonHonors English 3-4Lake Havasu High School
