Iceberg A-52Swarms of krill and other zooplankton flourish in the crevassesand outcrops of ice on the underside of this verylarge iceberg, which was about five kilometers wide and 21kilometers long.the sea surface in the satellite image. Obviously, this area of influence would increase dramaticallyif the remaining smaller icebergs were includedin our estimate. On a larger spatial scale, theproliferation of icebergs associated with globalwarming should markedly increase their influenceon the Southern Ocean ecosystem. With renewed funding from the NSF, we will becontinuing our iceberg studies in greater detailover the next three years. Our hope is to resolvethe importance of icebergs, from the drawdownof carbon dioxide during photosynthesis to thesequestration of particulate organic carbon intothe deep sea.AcknowledgmentsThis research was supported by the Office of Polar Programsof the National Science Foundation and by the David andLucile Packard Foundation.biographyA senior scientist at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research since2006, Kenneth L.
