Ruach6800 35th Ave NESeattle, WA 98115206.524.0075Congregation Beth Shalom • Voted in JT News—Best Congregation for 2010!May 2011 • Nisan~Iyar 5771 Volume 43, Issue 9M ESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, TZACHI LITOVAt this time of year, with Pesach now behind us, I alwayslook forward to the change I associate with spring andsummer, and, of course, this year is no different. Whilechange is always hard, it also can open new doors andnew chapters in our lives. With that said we say goodbyeto Jon Arnsten, our Shabbat Custodian for the last almost2 years. For those of you who knew him Jon was asteady and warm presence every Shabbat, bringing hissmile and easy going attitude that enhanced each weekfor our community. We wish him and his family all thebest on his new endeavors.Stepping in to take over is Carlos Delcid. Carlos isoriginally from El Salvador and has been in the northwestfor 10 years with his wife Naomi and their 2 boys. He andJon worked together throughout April ensuring thetransition was a smooth one. In addition Carlos will beworking for us doing weekly custodial and maintenanceand will become a regular presence at the shul. Pleasetake the time to welcome him when you see him.It says in the V’ahavta, “with all your heart, with all yoursoul and with all your might.” These words reflect theenergy that goes into the multitude of projects I amworking on at any given time. So it brings me greatpleasure to share that after years of working on this,Beth Shalom finally has wireless internet access availablefor use by the community. This would not have beenpossible without the assistance of Brent Brown whosepatience and persistence helped make this happen.Brent was also instrumental in the upgrade of our phonesystem last year that laid the groundwork for this newservice. It is a reminder that we are truly a sum of our parts. If there is something you’d like to see happen in thecommunity, an idea that’s been kicking around that youthink would benefit others, my door is always open tolisten, discuss and explore new possibilities. MahatmaGhandi put it beautifully when he said: “We must be thechange we want to see.”Annual CongregationalMeeting & Brunch 2011Happy Spring!TzachiSunday, May 22 • 10:30am-12:00pmJoin us in honoring this years’“Volunteer of the Year”Kevin CoskeyOther items on the agenda will be:• Budget presentations and vote• Board Nominations• Messages from PresidentINSIDE THIS ISSUE:Updates 1-3Youth Updates 4-5Family Camp Registration Form 6Adult Education 7-8Mussar Kallah Registration Form 9SHAVUOT 10Your presence is very important! Please join us for schmoozing, honoring, working and noshingas a community.Bar Mitvah, Anniversaries and Birthdays 11-12Events in Member’s Lives 13-14Contributions 15Service Schedule and Calendar 16-18Tzedakah Form 19

UpdatesF ROM THE SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE, CONTACT: ROBERT ISGUR/CAROLYN COHENContact: Carolyn Cohen/Robert Isgur atsacchairs@bethshalomseattle.org“For it says with regard to assisting the poor, open upyour hands and provide for him the extent of his needs, whatever is lacking for him. The extent of his needsrefers to a house, whatever is lacking refers to bed and atable.” Ketubot 67b.Beth Shalom has been involved in H2R since 2005 andCBS member Carolyn Cohen has served as the BethShalom liaison since that time. Many CBS members haveattended the annual Simchat Sukkot fundraiser, and H2Rhas received significant support from Rabbi Borodin andour shul staff. In 2009, in recognition of this partnership,Beth Shalom was named an official affiliate of the H2Rprogram.This month we highlight the Homeless to Renter(H2R) program and encourage you to attend theH2R fundraiser this summer on Sunday, August14 th , 2011.H2R was formed by members of Temple Beth Am inresponse to their experience hosting Tent City in 2003.As members engaged with the Tent City residents, theylearned that many of them had jobs yet still lackedsufficient funds to move out of homelessness. In addition, many shelters do not serve families, forcingparents and children into temporary separation. Beth Ammembers formed a committee to craft a meaningfulresponse to this issue and investigated options over thecourse of a year. H2R was born out of this effort.Currently, the program assists families in moving out ofhomelessness by providing move-in costs such assecurity deposits. Families generally receive about $800-1,000 from the fund, yet this small amount can make thedifference in being able to move into permanent shelter.H2R monies are also used for eviction prevention. Sinceprogram inception, H2R funds have helped 443 peoplemove into housing, representing 126 families, and 287children. All funds are administered by the Jewish FamilyService, which provides quarterly detailed reports back tothe committee on the families’ income source, referralagency, type of assistance provided, and amount of H2Rfunds distributed per family. The H2R committee setspolicies about recipient eligibility and how the program isadministered, monitors allocations, raises funds, andprovides each family with a welcome basket including ahand knit afghan. What you can do to help. Plan to attend the summerfundraiser “A Taste of Elegance in the Courtyard” atTemple Beth Am on August 14, 2011, at 5:00 pm. Wehope to raise $15,000, providing upfront costs to assist18-20 families move into a home of their own. Thisdinner event will feature cooking demonstrations andfood from renowned Seattle chefs: Chef Dylan Giordan ofSerafina & Cicchetti, Chef Zachary King of HeavyRestaurant Group (Purple Café), Chef William Leaman ofBakery Nouveau, as well as wine tasting from Eight BellsWinery. It has long been regarded as a raretreasure of our Torah tradition. Pirkei Avot, ascontrasted with the Talmud’s discussions aroundJewish law, centers our attention directly on theJew’s efforts to improve one’s relationship with G-dand fellow human being. Of all the manycommentaries written on Avoth, perhaps the clearestis that published in 1747 by Rabbi Yitzchak Magrisoof Constantinople , as part of the famed Me’am Lo’ezseries. His commentary was written in Ladino andwas translated into English in 1978 by David N.Barocas, a Sephardic scholar from Rodesto, Turkeyand then edited into a contemporary idiom by RabbiAryeh Kaplan. Rabbi Magriso ferrets out the rootmeaning of the text, and presents it in clear, unambiguous language. Stories, parables andethical discussions round out his commentary toproduce a clear and highly inspirational teaching.Dates: Wednesdays, May 4– June 1 (5 sessions)Time: 7:30-8:30pmCost: $50/Members; $75/Non-membersCongratulations on Beth Shalom’saward forBest Adult Education Programof 2010There is no charge for Shabbat Learning.Israel Discussion GroupTime: 1st Saturday of the month, 1:15—2:15pmJoin us for a Yom HaAtzmaut and IsraeliSing-a– long with Ruth EtzioniApril 2,May 7, 1:15-2:15pm, Beit MidrashThere Shall Be No Needy—Discussion GroupTime: 2nd Saturday of the month, 1:15-2:15pmJoin the Global Poverty Discussion Group and the SocialAction Committee each second Shabbat as we read anddiscuss Rabbi Jill Jacobs’ book There Shall be No Needy:Pursuing Social Justice Through Jewish Law and Tradition. Each month, we focus on a chapter of the book, coveringsuch issues as poverty and the poor, collection andallocation of tzedakah, housing the homeless, andenvironmental sustainability.
