A few smalltowns scattered along Highway 395 are heavily used for tourism access to LasVegas and Lake Tahoe to the north as well as the Sierra Nevada to the west. Thelargest settlement is the ski resort town of Mammoth Lakes (8,200+), where thew<strong>in</strong>ter population swells with ski season. Tourism is a major economic activity<strong>in</strong> this region, with 50 percent or more of new home construction <strong>in</strong> Alp<strong>in</strong>eand Mono counties be<strong>in</strong>g second home development.
