Its <strong>regional</strong> character is def<strong>in</strong>ed largely by agriculture, <strong>in</strong>terspersedwith cities along primary transport corridors, with Fresno (500,000+ people)prom<strong>in</strong>ent <strong>in</strong> the northern end and Bakersfield (350,000+ people) <strong>in</strong> thesouthern end. Agriculture is the predom<strong>in</strong>ant economic activity; the regionconta<strong>in</strong>ed the top three agricultural counties <strong>in</strong> the state <strong>in</strong> 2010 when evaluatedon value, total<strong>in</strong>g roughly $16 billion California Farm Bureau Federation, 2012).The region also stretches <strong>in</strong>to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada and is knownas a prom<strong>in</strong>ent tourism access po<strong>in</strong>t for Yosemite National Park, K<strong>in</strong>gs CanyonNational Park, and Sequoia National Park.
