Those most vulnerable to high levels of ozone and particulate matter <strong>in</strong>cludepeople who work or spend a lot of time outdoors, such as employees of theagricultural and the tourism <strong>in</strong>dustries. People over the age of 65 have the largest<strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> mortality with <strong>in</strong>creased concentrations of ozone (Med<strong>in</strong>a-Ramonand Schwartz, 2008). Tr<strong>in</strong>ity, Modoc, Siskiyou and Shasta counties have a relativelyhigh percentage of population older than 65. This population is more vulnerableto heat events and air quality problems.Modoc County is one of the state’s counties with the highest proportion ofelderly liv<strong>in</strong>g alone (English et al., 2007).
