Biophysical CharacteristicsThe landscape of the North Coast region consists primarily of the CoastMounta<strong>in</strong> Ranges, where peaks vary from 2,000 to 5,000 feet. The Klamath River,which orig<strong>in</strong>ates <strong>in</strong> Oregon, w<strong>in</strong>ds its way through the north end of the state,culm<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g 45 miles south of Crescent City. The other major river system, theEel, extends from Lake County to the Pacific Ocean 15 miles south of Eureka(CERES, 2005). Most of this region, part of the larger Klamath/North CoastBioregion, is covered by forest. It receives more ra<strong>in</strong>fall than any other part ofthe state (CDFG, 2007). The region supports diverse wildlife <strong>in</strong> varied ecosystemsthat <strong>in</strong>clude sand coastl<strong>in</strong>es, coastal estuaries, grasslands, coastal shrub, freshwateraquatic ecosystems, riparian areas, p<strong>in</strong>e forests, mixed evergreen forests, andredwood forests (CERES, 2005; CDFG, 2007).
