Executive SummaryThe California Adaptation Planning Guide (APG), a set of four complementarydocuments, provides guidance to support communities in addressing theunavoidable consequences of climate change. The APG, developed by theCalifornia Emergency Management Agency and California Natural ResourcesAgency, introduces the basis for climate change adaptation planning and details astep-by-step process for local and regional climate vulnerability assessment andadaptation strategy development.The APG: Understanding Regional Characteristics provides environmental andsocioeconomic information for a series of 11 climate impact regions. The choiceto designate regions is due to the statewide diversity in biophysical setting,climate, and jurisdictional characteristics. While conditions may be diverse withineach region, the range of conditions will be narrower than at the statewide level.Designating regions allows for greater depth and more detailed information to bepresented.California Adaptation Planning Guide Documents• APG: Planning for Adaptive Communities – This document presents the basisfor climate change adaptation planning and introduces a step-by-step processfor local and regional climate vulnerability assessment and adaptation strategydevelopment. All communities should start with this document.• APG: Defining Local & Regional Impacts – This supplemental document providesa more in-depth understanding of how climate change can affect a community.Seven “impact sectors” are described to support communities conducting aclimate vulnerability assessment.YOUAREHERE• APG: Understanding Regional Characteristics – The impact of climate changevaries across the state. This supplemental document identifies climate impactregions, including their environmental and socioeconomic characteristics.• APG: Identifying Adaptation Strategies – This supplemental document explorespotential adaptation strategies that communities can use to meet adaptationneeds.
