<strong>St</strong>. Peter’s <strong>College</strong>Oxford<strong>St</strong>ipendiary Lectureship <strong>in</strong> English (Old and Middle English)Further Particulars<strong>St</strong>. Peter’s <strong>College</strong> <strong>in</strong>vites applications for a one-year <strong>St</strong>ipendiary Lectureship <strong>in</strong> English (Oldand Middle English), start<strong>in</strong>g on 1 October 2013. Applicants should have submitted a doctoraldissertation <strong>in</strong> any area of medieval English. This position will be very suitable for a scholarseek<strong>in</strong>g to ga<strong>in</strong> experience <strong>in</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g, and may be extended to two years. Clos<strong>in</strong>g date: 26July 2013.The successful applicant will be expected to teach the equivalent of five hours of tutorials andclasses for the <strong>College</strong> each week dur<strong>in</strong>g academic terms, or the annualised equivalent of thisamount, depend<strong>in</strong>g on variable demand across the academic year. Some of the students may beVisit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>St</strong>udents at the <strong>College</strong>.He or she will also be required to share the adm<strong>in</strong>istration of teach<strong>in</strong>g and the direction ofundergraduate studies <strong>in</strong> English, to take a full role <strong>in</strong> undergraduate admissions <strong>in</strong> English, toset and mark <strong>College</strong> exam<strong>in</strong>ations (‘collections’) and generally to work <strong>in</strong> association with the<strong>College</strong>’s Tutorial Fellow <strong>in</strong> English, Dr Abigail Williams, as well as the other <strong>St</strong>ipendiary Lecturer,Dr Andrew Blades (19 th -21 st centuries).She or he will be expected to teach the first and second year medieval period papers (‘PrelimsPaper 2: Early Medieval Literature c. 650-1350’ and ‘FHS Paper 2: Literature <strong>in</strong> English 1350-1550’). An ability to contribute to the teach<strong>in</strong>g of any part of ‘Prelims Paper 1: Introduction toEnglish Language and Literature’ would be an advantage. She or he will also be expected toteach third year students writ<strong>in</strong>g dissertations <strong>in</strong> areas close to the Lecturer’s research andteach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terests and to assist <strong>in</strong> the teach<strong>in</strong>g of students tak<strong>in</strong>g the medieval degree pathway(Course II).Details about these courses can be found on the Oxford English Faculty website:http://www.english.ox.ac.uk.The appo<strong>in</strong>tment will be for one year with the possibility of renewal for a further year.Remuneration will be on the Senior Tutors Committee scale for <strong>St</strong>ipendiary Lecturers. The ratefor a 5-hour post is £10,319 to £11,606 per annum. <strong>St</strong>ipendiary Lecturers are eligible to jo<strong>in</strong> theUniversities Superannuation Scheme and are entitled to subscribe to the Oxford <strong>College</strong>s’Healthcare Plan.


The successful candidate will be an associate member of the Senior Common Room and will beentitled to two free lunches or d<strong>in</strong>ners per week <strong>in</strong> Full Term. He or she will not be a member ofthe <strong>College</strong>’s Govern<strong>in</strong>g Body.<strong>St</strong> <strong>Peter's</strong> <strong>College</strong> was founded <strong>in</strong> 1928. The <strong>College</strong> currently comprises a Master and 40Fellows <strong>in</strong> a wide range of subjects, about 100 graduate and 350 undergraduate students, andabout 90 <strong>College</strong> staff. The build<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>in</strong> a central but quiet location on the site of the medievalNew Inn Hall, range <strong>in</strong> date from L<strong>in</strong>ton House of 1794 and Canal House of 1828 - both formerheadquarters of the Oxford Canal Company - through the former parish church of <strong>St</strong> Peter-le-Bailey, built <strong>in</strong> 1874 and now the <strong>College</strong> Chapel, to residents' blocks of the 1930's, 1970's and1980's. There are two further residents’ blocks, of the 1990’s, with<strong>in</strong> five m<strong>in</strong>utes’ walk andfurther build<strong>in</strong>g projects are currently <strong>in</strong> progress.
