ThemePhoto: Nasjonalbiblioteket, BilledsamlingenWhat drives peopleto the very endsof the EarthIn 1893 polar ship Fram and explorer Fridtjof Nansen left Norway for an expedition to the North Pole. Captain on board was Otto Sverdrup.8Fridtjof Nansen was the first to pioneercrossings of Greenland and the ArcticOcean. These achievements, coupled withhis personality and diplomacy, soon madehim effectively the most powerful man inNorway. Inspired by Nansen, men like RoaldAmundsen emerged to take up the mantle;men who combined all the resourcefulnessrequired to survive the harsh elements withthe practicalities needed to explore thesevast white continents. This is a tradition thatwe at Hurtigruten, as true Norwegian flagcarriers, are proud to continue.Nasjonalbiblioteket, BilledsamlingenHurtigruten’s long and proud historystarted with pioneering sea captain,Richard With. It was With who originallyproposed a regular steam ship service tolink both northern and southern Norway.Negotiating a sea route that weaves itsway through a tangled network of reefs, islands and inlets, meant that it wasimportant to find a safe trade route alongthis labyrinthine coastline. In 1893 With leftTrondheim at the helm of the steamshipDS Vesteraalen, bound for the northerncity of Hammerfest. Three years laterHurtigruten started the ‘Sportman’s Route’between Hammerfest and Spitsbergen, with Otto Sverdrup (who had just returnedfrom an expedition across the ArcticOcean) captaining the vessel. That sameyear Richard With built a hotel nearLongyearbyen on Spitsbergen.

HistoryOur ships have been an integral part of Norwegian coastal life for over a century, crossing theArctic Circle to sail into the Norwegian Arctic countless times. Our founder, Captain With, established the first hotel in Svalbard, a location to which he transported a stream of guestsduring the summer months. To skipper these Arctic voyages he hired the most competent sailorof his day, the remarkable captain of Nansen’s Fram, Otto Sverdrup. So how did a small nation like Norwaymanage to beat the imperial might ofBritain to reach the South Pole first? The turn of the 19th century was theheroic age of exploration, with therace to reveal the mysteries of the‘terra incognitos’ providing the holygrail of its day. At the heart of this wasan overpowering need for scientificunderstanding and an unquenchablethirst for knowledge of the world aroundus. But another strong motivating factorwas national fervour. This was a timeof empire building throughout Europeand in polar exploration Norway foundsuccess easy to come by.1888 to 1889Fridtjof Nansen becomes the first man tocross the Greenland icecap.1893Captain Richard With establishes a regularsteam ship service linking northern andsouthern Norway.1893 to 1896Fridtjof Nansen takes the Fram on herinaugural expedition to the North Pole.1896Captain With prefabricates a hotel inTrondheim and carries it aboard the DSVesterålen (Hurtigruten’s first vessel)to Spitsbergen.1897Otto Sverdrup captains the DS Lofotenup to Spitsbergen from Hammerfest, establishingthe first ‘Sportman’s Route’ upbeyond the Arctic Circle.1898 to 1902Fram sails on her second expeditionunder the leadership of Otto Sverdrup.1903 to 1906Roald Amundsen becomes the first manto navigate the North West Passage travellingaboard the small sloop Gjøa, with acrew of just six men.1910 to 1912Roald Amundsen sails the Fram to the Bayof Whales in Antarctica’s Ross Sea, thestarting point for his historic race againstScott to reach the South Pole. On 14December 1911, Amundsen and his menbecome the first humans to set foot onthe Geographic South Pole.1934The DS Lyngen starts sailing from theNorwegian mainland up to Svalbard, carrying a mixed cargo of trappers, touristsand freight.1989Spitsbergen Travel is established and soonbecomes the largest tour operator in theworld north of 78 degrees.1994The summer express to Spitsbergenbegins again, this time utilising the classicNordstjernen to undertake the journey.2002The MS Nordnorge is deployed byHurtigruten to Antarctica to undertake thecompany’s inaugural expedition voyagesto the Antarctic Peninsula.2007The new Fram is named by Her RoyalHighness, Crown Princess Mette-Marit. Thevessel then departs for Greenland, whereshe spends the whole summer, beforecontinuing south towards Antarctica.2008The Fram becomes the first vessel in theHurtigruten fleet to cross both polar circles.planting the Norwegian flag on the world’smost southerly point after a dramatic (andfor Englishman Robert Falcon Scott afatally costly) race. In 1936 Hurtigruten begandaily departures between Bergen andKirkenes, since which time the Hurtigrutenfleet has crossed the northern polar circlenearly 50,000 times. In 1969 HurtigrutenBetween 1898 and 1920 the Norwegianspushed the boundaries of exploration evenfurther. Otto Sverdrup, aboard the Fram, led a scientific expedition to map the areato the west of Greenland, whilst RoaldAmundsen was the first to sail throughthe Northwest Passage from the Atlanticthrough to the Arctic waters of the Pacificin 1905. In 1912, Amundsen was also thefirst to reach the South Pole, eventuallyset up an express route to Spitsbergenduring the summer months and in 2002 itbegan its first season in Antarctica. MeanwhileSpitsbergen Travel was increasing itsactivities in Svalbard and was fast gaining areputation as the largest tourism operatorin the world operating north of 78 degrees. The company’s first season in Greenlandin 2007 saw its first voyages aboard thenewly commissioned MS Fram, whilst thefollowing year the vessel crossed both thenorthern and southern polar circles.9
