AU Men’s GolfMeet the Head CoachJOHN DONOFRIOHead Golf CoachFifth SeasonJohn Donofrio started as theMen’s Golf Coach at <strong>Aurora</strong><strong>University</strong> in the fall of 2002.Under Coach Donofrio’s leadership,the golf program has shown steadyprogress with returning golfers and talented recruits.The AU golf program consists of a competitive and fulltraditional spring schedule, including a spring breakcompetitive trip and a fall nontraditional seasontournament play. AU golf is a member of the NorthernIllinois-Iowa Conference (NIIC) conference of NCAADivision III and will join the newly created NorthernAthletics Conference in the fall of 2006 .Prior to joining AU, Donofrio was with Dominican<strong>University</strong>, where he started both the men’s andwomen’s golf programs, competing in NAIA and NCAADivision III. He has been involved with the game ofgolf for the past 25 years, since his introduction as acaddie at Calumet Country Club. He competes inamateur golf tournaments in the Chicago District GolfAssociation, and is a member of the Chicago GolfCoaches Association and WGA Par Club.Donofrio earned a bachelor’s degree from the<strong>University</strong> of St. Francis and a master’s in businessadministration from Benedictine <strong>University</strong>. He hasworked in management positions in the insuranceindustry for the past 20 years. He also taught in thebusiness departments at the <strong>University</strong> of St. Francisand Joliet Junior College as an adjunct instructor foreconomics, business policy and service management.AU Men’s Golf and Tennis3


2006 Golf Prospectus<strong>Aurora</strong> <strong>University</strong> Head Coach JohnDonofrio is looking forward to animproved and stronger performance forthe 2006 spring golf season.The team is young but made a strongshowing in the fall season. AU Men’s TennisMeet the Head CoachPAUL HEINKELHead Tennis CoachSecond SeasonPaul Heinkel enters his secondseason as Head Men’s Tennis Coachat <strong>Aurora</strong> <strong>University</strong>. Heinkel comesto AU from the Fox Valley ParkDistrict, where he served as DeputyDirector of Recreation Services.With the Fox Valley Park District for 28 years,Heinkel served in several capacities, includingoverseeing the <strong>Aurora</strong> Tennis Club. Currently amember of the United States Tennis Association,Heinkel regularly plays competitive tennis and is ratedas a 4.5 player. He enjoys working directly with <strong>Aurora</strong><strong>University</strong>’s tennis athletes, utilizing his skills andresources to build a solid, competitive program.Heinkel received his B.S. in park and recreationadministration from Southern Illinois <strong>University</strong> in1973. Walsh led theSpartans to nine NIIC ConferenceChampionships and nine NCAA Tournament appearanceswhile posting a 320-85 (.790) won-lost record in10 seasons. Walsh also served as an Assistant FootballCoach at AU from 1986-1996 and was part of thecoaching staff that reinstated football after it had beendropped in 1952. This Is <strong>Aurora</strong> <strong>University</strong>Eckhart Hall<strong>Aurora</strong> <strong>University</strong> traces its origins to the 1893 founding of a seminary in the smalltown of Mendota, IL. Though established initially to prepare graduates for ministry, theinstitution soon adopted a broader mission and moved to a new campus on the westernedge of the nearby community of <strong>Aurora</strong>. With this change came a different nameand a growing enrollment. In 1985, the institution was rechristened <strong>Aurora</strong> <strong>University</strong>.In 1992, the <strong>Aurora</strong> and George Williams College traditions blended when the twoinstitutions entered into the affiliation agreement that paved the way for a mergereight years later.Today <strong>Aurora</strong> <strong>University</strong> is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of theNorth Central Association to award degrees at the baccalaureate, master’s, and doctorallevels. The institution enrolls approximately 4,000 degree-seeking students a year onits Illinois and Wisconsin campuses. AU offers its undergraduates a wide range of onandoff-campus learning experiences. Students participate in more than 40 musical,literary, religious, social and service organizations and play active roles in campusgovernance. The university also fields 18 NCAA Division III intercollegiate athleticteams. The Spartans boast a winning tradition with 37 conference titles in recent yearsand 32 regular appearances in national tournaments.The Alumni Hall of Physical Education features a racquetball court, climbing wall,complete locker room facilities, training room, weight room, aerobic-activities room,classroom and coaches’ offices.At AU, we believe that the educational needs of students are served best through theformation of strategic partnerships with institutions of like vision, mission and values.Such collaborations also enhance the well being of the communities around our campus.For example, our innovative partnership with the West <strong>Aurora</strong> School District is recognizednationally as a model for educational reform. New this year is AU’s $14 millionInstitute for Collaboration that houses this growing collaboration and the students andfaculty it nurtures. Our George Williams College at Williams Bay, WI, also is the scene forimportant collaborative efforts. Last year, the residential, conference and academic facility,developed in partnership with Children’s Oncology Services Inc., opened. In the yearsahead, the new building will serve as the home to the One Step At A Time Camp for childrenwith cancer and the university’s rapidly growing academic program.<strong>Aurora</strong> <strong>University</strong> is located in west <strong>Aurora</strong>, within an hour’s drive of Chicago andat the western end of the Illinois Research and Development Corridor.
