Sorensen XEL &New XEL-P SeriesBench, System and ATE SolutionsXEL Series -XEL-P Series -Advanced linear regulated laboratory power supplies;true analog controls with digital functionalityFull remote control for bench & system applications withanalog, RS-232, USB, LAN (LXI) or GPIB interfacesWWW.PROGRAMMABLEPOWER.COM

Sorensen XEL series - advanced linear regulated laboratory power suppliesXEL Series: Analog control for a digital worldAnalog controls with digital stabilityAs technology has changed, many products have moved from analogcontrols to digital ones. Although digital controls suit many instruments, they do not necessarily suit a bench power supply. Customerresearch shows that many users prefer the speed and simplicity ofconventional analog controls for setting voltage and current. Digitalcontrols may offer greater precision, but often at the expense ofease-of-use. With this in mind, the Sorensen XEL series has retainedtrue analog controls enabling easy operation. The main disadvantage of analog controls is stability and security. The settings of analog potentiometers can drift over time. Moreimportantly, the settings can be changed accidentally with potentiallyserious consequences. The XEL series introduces S-Lock. One press ofthe Lock button transfers control of voltage and current from the analogcontrols to internal digital circuitry. This offers not just completesecurity, but exceptional stability as well with each setting controlledby an instrumentation quality DAC.Linear regulation for ultra-low noiseLinear regulation still offers the lowest output noise and the besttransient response (recovery time from a sudden current step). Mostlinear regulated power supplies offer low output noise with figuresbelow 2mV rms being typical. The XEL series goes a stage further withan rms noise figure of 0.4mV with tightly specified pk-pk noise andcommon-mode current figures.Lock your settings at the touch of a button !Choose a voltage range that suits your taskWhen working with any particular piece of equipment, engineers oftenrequire a voltage source variable over only a narrow range. Set thevoltage too high and damage might occur, set it too low and the circuitmay reset. That’s where the V-Span function of the New Sorensen XEL series comesin. It allows the user to redefine the end-stop values of the voltagecontrol to define a specific voltage range. For example:An engineer is working on a circuit that will eventually operate from fourNiMh cells. They use V-Span to set a Vmax of 5.8 volts (to preventover-voltage damage) and a Vmin of 3.6 volts (to ensure that thecircuit doesn’t reset). They now have a power supply which provides high resolution analogcontrol over the exact voltage range they need.Vmin and Vmax can be set anywhere between zero and maximum outputvoltage subject only to Vmax > (Vmin + 0.1V). The fine control givesadditional adjustment of ±1%.Once set, the voltage span function can be turned on or off at the pressof a button*.

Sorensen XEL series - ultra compact using minimum bench or rack spaceUltra-compact design with higher power efficiencyand near-silent coolingThe Sorensen XEL series achieves an exceptional power density fora linear regulated power supply by offering up to 90 watts from a ¼rack 3U sized chassis. This gives it an unusually small bench footprinttaking up less space on a crowded bench. For rack-mount application,up to four units can be mounted into a single slot. Despite its smallsize and linear regulation, the XEL series generates relatively littleheat through the use of an advanced phase controlled pre-regulator.This gives it significantly higher energy efficiency than conventionallinear regulated designs, particularly when supplying lower voltages. The internal heat-sinks use fan-assisted convection cooling in order toremove the heat with minimal fan noise.High accuracy four digitmeters have a fixed resolutionfor consistent readingsat-a-glance.View and adjust setting limitsat any time.S-Lock digitally locks voltageand current settings at thetouch of a button.True analog controls makeadjustment quick and simple.V-Span enables the full 300 orotation of the voltage controlto cover any voltage range.Safety binding post terminalscan accept fixed-shroud 4mmplugs** as well as normalplugs, bare wires, and forkconnectors.Low current range gives0.1mA meter resolution andfiner low current setting.Meter averaging reduces thejitter from rapidly varyingload currents.DC output switch enablesvoltage and current to beset up before connecting theload.Voltage sensing can bechanged between localand remote at the flick of aswitch.Better performance ....ffLinear regulation:ultra-low output noise and fast transient recoveryf fHigh power density:90 watts per output from an ultra-compact case sizeffHigher precision:exceptional line and load regulation;easy-switch remote senseffBetter metering:high accuracy four digit fixed-resolution meters; low currentrange; current meter averaging.... with real ease of useffTrue analog controls:quick and intuitive adjustment of voltage and currentffWith digital convenience:unique S-Lock and V-Span functions (see opposite)ffSee exactly what’s happening:dc output switch - check your settings before applying them; ‘viewsettings’ button - check and adjust limits at any timeffSafe and secure to use:lockable voltage and current settings (using S-Lock); connect viasafety binding-post terminals

Dual Output model - XEL 30-3D (4-mode dual)Compact DimensionsThe Sorensen XEL 30-3D is a dual output power supply with the samehigh power density as the single output models - 180 watts from ahalf rack 3U sized casing (214mm x 131mm).Four Modes of OperationThe XEL 30-3D is more than just two XEL 30-3 single power suppliesin one box. It has four modes of operation: Independent, IsolatedTracking, Isolated Ratio Tracking, and True Parallel.Independent Mode:The two outputs are completely independentand electrically isolated from each other.Isolated Tracking Mode:The two outputs remain electrically isolated, butthe voltage control of the Master output sets anidentical voltage on the Slave output.Note: Isolated Tracking enables the user to create two railsof either polarity and to reference them to different groundsif necessary (e.g. digital ground and analog ground).Isolated Ratio Tracking Mode:As normal tracking, but the Slave voltage canbe set to any percentage of the Master voltageand retains that ratio as the Master voltage isvaried.True Parallel Mode:All of the power is channelled to the Masteroutput which can then supply up to 6 amps.Note: In Parallel mode the Master side becomes a single180 watt power supply, with the current meter operatingto 6 amps. The slave output is disabled and its displays areturned off.Simultaneous Output ControlThe Both On/Both Off buttons are in additionto the individual switches for each output, and allow both outputs to be turned on or offsynchronously by a single button press.Synchronous switching of the outputs is ofincreasing importance for circuitry which can bedamaged if one voltage rail is present withoutthe other.* Safety interlocksA key requirement in a power supply is to prevent thewrong voltage or current being accidentally applied to thecircuit-under-test.Consequently all operations that could result in anunexpected change in voltage or current settings haveintelligent interlocks to prevent this.** Safety terminalsThe use of fixed-shroud 4mm plugs is becoming mandatorywithin an increasing number of laboratories for safetyreasons.Standard binding post terminals can not accept thesefixed-shroud plugs.

Sorensen XEL-P Series - comprehensive remote control facilitiesNew XEL-P SeriesInterface to every applicationBench and System useThe New Sorensen XEL-P series includes all of the manual control featuresof the XEL series, but adds comprehensive remote control facilities. The ultra-compact rack-modular sizing makes it ideally suited to rackmounted system applications, while its user-friendly manual controls areretained for bench top applications.Rear Power TerminalsPower and sense terminals are duplicated on the rear panel for rackmount applications or other situations where rear connection is moreappropriate.Digital Remote ControlTo meet the varying needs of today’s engineers, a comprehensive array ofinterfaces is provided.
