Paul GoodchildPaul Goodchild studied trumpet in Sydney and Europe and was appointed a full-time member ofthe Sydney Symphony at age 18, later becoming Associate Principal Trumpet. With the SSO, hehas toured extensively throughout the USA, Europe, Japan, Taiwan and Asia, as well as Singapore,China and Korea with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. He is Principal Trumpet of many ofSydney's freelance orchestras and frequently performs with the Chamber Soloists of Sydney,Collegium Musicum at UNSW, Australia Ensemble, and the Australian Chamber Orchestra, withwhom he has also been a soloist.In 2009 he performed in the Townsville Chamber Music Festival and in the Sydney Festival withthe London Sinfonietta and Morphoses Ballet. This year, he will perform at the InternationalTrumpet Guild World Conference in Sydney. Leading Australian composers have written works forhim, including Carl Vine, Ross Edwards, Barry McKimm, David Stanhope, Matthew Hindson andPaul Stanhope. He holds a Bachelor of Music degreefrom the Queensland Conservatorium (where he studied with Yoram Levy), and a master's degreefrom Northwestern University (Charles Geyer). He was Head of Brass at the Western AustralianAcademy of Performing Arts when he resided in Perth, and is currently on the brass faculty atANAM.

Rob Johnson – Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal HornRobert Johnson <strong>studied</strong> horn at the NSW Conservatorium. He was appo<strong>in</strong>ted Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal Horn ofWest Australian Symphony Orchestra, with whom he regularly toured Western Australia <strong>and</strong>recorded for ABC Radio. Follow<strong>in</strong>g further study <strong>in</strong> Europe <strong>and</strong> the USA, Robert returned to<strong>Sydney</strong>, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1986 jo<strong>in</strong>ed the <strong>Sydney</strong> Symphony as Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal Horn. He has performed as asoloist <strong>and</strong> conductor with the orchestra on many occasions s<strong>in</strong>ce.Robert Johnson works regularly with the Australia Ensemble <strong>and</strong> <strong>Sydney</strong> Soloists, <strong>and</strong> was afound<strong>in</strong>g member of the Chamber Soloists of <strong>Sydney</strong>. He has also taught at the <strong>Sydney</strong>Conservatorium <strong>and</strong> the Canberra School of Music.Ron Pruss<strong>in</strong>g – Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal TromboneRonald Pruss<strong>in</strong>g graduated from the <strong>Sydney</strong> Conservatorium of Music <strong>in</strong> 1974. In 1970, hav<strong>in</strong>g<strong>studied</strong> the trombone for only 12 months, he was chosen to tour with the Australian YouthOrchestra to Japan for Expo '70. He subsequently ga<strong>in</strong>ed much experience play<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> manyorchestras as a casual musician, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>Sydney</strong> <strong>and</strong> Melbourne symphony orchestras.In 1978 he was appo<strong>in</strong>ted Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal Trombone with the <strong>Sydney</strong> Elizabethan Orchestra, <strong>and</strong>subsequently Associate Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal Trombone with the <strong>Sydney</strong> Symphony. He was appo<strong>in</strong>tedPr<strong>in</strong>cipal <strong>in</strong> 1986.In 1983, he was the first Australian trombonist to be <strong>in</strong>vited to present lectures<strong>and</strong> give recitals at the annual Sem<strong>in</strong>ar of the International Trombone Association, held <strong>in</strong>Nashville, Tennessee.Ronald Pruss<strong>in</strong>g is a regular recitalist at trombone gather<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> Australia. He is a member of theSalvation Army, <strong>and</strong> has taken the Salvos' B<strong>and</strong> on tours of the USA <strong>and</strong> Canada.Rick Miller – Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal TimpanistRichard Miller was born <strong>in</strong> Melbourne <strong>in</strong> 1948. Although rock <strong>and</strong> jazz were the abid<strong>in</strong>g passionsof his youth, he decided to beg<strong>in</strong> percussion <strong>and</strong> timpani studies at the <strong>Sydney</strong> Conservatorium ofMusic with the <strong>Sydney</strong> Symphony Orchestra's timpanist Alard Mal<strong>in</strong>g. He then jo<strong>in</strong>ed the ABC'snewly formed National Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Orchestra, <strong>and</strong> subsequently began play<strong>in</strong>g with the SSO.Richard Miller <strong>studied</strong> <strong>in</strong> the United States for five years <strong>and</strong> then spent two years <strong>in</strong> Brita<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong>Europe, pursu<strong>in</strong>g a jazz <strong>and</strong> rock career, before return<strong>in</strong>g to Australia to take up a position aspercussionist with the SSO. He was also <strong>in</strong>volved with the <strong>Sydney</strong>-based Synergy percussion


ensemble, a partnership which brought him <strong>in</strong> close contact with Peter Sculthorpe, Ross Edwards,Nigel Westlake <strong>and</strong> many of Australia's lead<strong>in</strong>g composers.S<strong>in</strong>ce becom<strong>in</strong>g the SSO's pr<strong>in</strong>cipal timpanist <strong>in</strong> 1986, Richard Miller has performed with almostall the major performance ensembles <strong>in</strong> <strong>Sydney</strong> <strong>and</strong> also teaches at the <strong>Sydney</strong> Conservatorium ofMusic.Francesco Celata – Associate Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal Clar<strong>in</strong>etFrancesco Celata graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts <strong>in</strong> 1987. Follow<strong>in</strong>g studies <strong>in</strong>Amsterdam <strong>and</strong> Siena, he returned to Australia <strong>in</strong> 1991 where he was appo<strong>in</strong>ted Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal Clar<strong>in</strong>etwith the Queensl<strong>and</strong> Philharmonic Orchestra.Francesco has been a member of the <strong>Sydney</strong> Symphony Orchestra s<strong>in</strong>ce 1993, <strong>and</strong> has appearedas soloist on numerous occasions with the <strong>Sydney</strong> Symphony as well as the Tasmanian SymphonyOrchestra <strong>and</strong> Auckl<strong>and</strong> Philharmonia. He has also performed as guest pr<strong>in</strong>cipal Clar<strong>in</strong>et with theLondon Symphony Orchestra.Francesco Celata is an active chamber musician <strong>and</strong> is a found<strong>in</strong>g member of one of <strong>Sydney</strong>'slead<strong>in</strong>g chamber ensembles, the <strong>Sydney</strong> Soloists. He has taught clar<strong>in</strong>et at the <strong>Sydney</strong>Conservatorium s<strong>in</strong>ce 1994.Tobias Breider – Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal ViolaViolist Tobias Breider is orig<strong>in</strong>ally from Münster, Germany. On complet<strong>in</strong>g his Master's degreewith dist<strong>in</strong>ction <strong>in</strong> Cologne, he travelled to New York to further his studies, before return<strong>in</strong>g toGermany to undertake a soloist program <strong>in</strong> Lübeck. His <strong>in</strong>tensive study of chamber music has<strong>in</strong>cluded lessons with the Alban Berg Quartet, the Juilliard Str<strong>in</strong>g Quartet, Sarah Nelsova <strong>and</strong>Miriam Fried, among others.Tobias Breider was a fulltime member of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra for seven years.In 2008-09 he was Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal Viola <strong>in</strong> the Philharmonic State Orchestra Hamburg under SimoneYoung. He has also appeared as guest pr<strong>in</strong>cipal with the Leipzig Gew<strong>and</strong>haus Orchestra, theDüsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, the Radio Symphony Orchestra Berl<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> orchestras <strong>in</strong> Vienna<strong>and</strong> Cologne.


Cather<strong>in</strong>e Hewgill – Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal CelloCather<strong>in</strong>e Hewgill began study<strong>in</strong>g cello <strong>in</strong> Perth, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1978 travelled to London for a year's studyat the Royal College of Music. She then <strong>studied</strong> at the University of Southern California.In 1984 she won the Hammer-Rostropovich Scholarship <strong>and</strong> was <strong>in</strong>vited by Rostropovich toperform <strong>in</strong> a recital at the Second American Cello Congress. A period of private study withRostropovich followed. She then toured Europe with I Solisti Veneti, <strong>and</strong> <strong>studied</strong> with WilliamPleeth <strong>in</strong> London. On her return to Australia she jo<strong>in</strong>ed the Australian Chamber Orchestra.In 1989 she jo<strong>in</strong>ed the <strong>Sydney</strong> Symphony, <strong>and</strong> was appo<strong>in</strong>ted Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal Cello <strong>in</strong> 1990. She hasperformed as a soloist with most of the Australian orchestras.
