Other destinations as part of a bus trip included Omarama, onto Dunedin, the Taieri Gorge Steam Train plus a trip around town and a visit to the steepest street in the world and at night the Haggis ceremony. Dunedin to Lake Manapoare to Le Anau , a trip to Milford Sound and a large boat trip to the ocean. Le Anau to Queenstown, doing jet boating at Shotover and the Shipers Canyon 4 w drive and jet boating as well with a ride in the Gondola and an evening meal at the homestead – Walter Peaker Station which only has access by the steam ship TSS Carnslaw. Queenstown to Haast Pass to Fox Flacier with a helicopter flight over the Fox Glacier and Franz Joseph Glacier and an Ice landing. Up to Gleymouth with the Tranz Alpine Train and beach to Christchurch. A wonderful trip the bus driver was excellent with driving and commentaryOther places visited were Hanmer Springs then onto the west coast and up to Nelson and onto Picton for boating on the Marlborough Sound, did the mail run and another 2 hour trip around the sound. Captain Cook liked the place so much he visited 5 times. Back down the east coast to Kaikaura then west back to Hanmer Springs for Quad biking, 18 holes of golf and a go in the thermal pools. Down to Christchurch to start the first of 3 race meetings in 3 weeks. Rapoona is fairly long with 14 corners. Alan, Don and he had to race against F2 cars with wings and slicks and with some 80 KPH speed differential on the straights. Common sense prevailed and they were shifted to vintage and specials where they were able to pass a few cars in the other four races. Down to Timaru where we had 9 races all short and Alan and he were in with the Formula Juniors plus a few specials. Track had 10 corners with the faster cars having to brake before the finish line to make turn one which made for close racing.Then onto Invercargill to look at Bert Munroe’s old bikes and membrobilia at a hardware store in the main street. We could only get accommodation at Riverton nearly 50km from the track because a big farming show was on at the same time as our racing. It’s a power circuit so most races he was at the wrong end of the field. Formula Juniors are not that reliable as axles and other things break so you can pass them that way. Fred Sayers in the Mini suffered a few paint scrapes on Sundays’ first race he spun in front of another car and got hit on the back wheel, bending the suspension, so missed out on the last 2 races. All in all a great trip with enjoyable motor racing to boot and they will looking to compete again in NZ next January at the Beny Houlm Festival, North Island and others are welcome.
